With the World Series of Poker about three weeks away tournament officials are preparing for another big increase in attendance.

The WSOP, occurring from May 27 to July 17 at the Rio Hotel and Casino, are prepping 377 poker tables spread out over 100,000 square feet, about a 25 percent increase from a year. Called a fad by some, poker's popularity seems to continue to grow, and WSOP plans to be ready.

"We're very confident that our total participation will set a record this year," tournament vice president Ty Stewart said.

In 2009, the WSOP set a record for total participants with 60,875 competitors from 115 countries vying for $174 million over the course of 57 events.

Another difference in this year's tournament is that the weekends of the seven-week WSOP will feature relatively low buy-in no-limit hold 'em tournaments at $1,000. That's a bargain price for a shot at winning a coveted WSOP bracelet.

One reason for the addition is that in 2009 the WSOP opened with a $1,000 buy-in hold 'em event and drew more than 6,000 players.

For anyone interested in the Main Event it still requires a $10,000 buy-in — check out the Bodog Poker room to see how you could get your buy-in for free as a Team Bodog Member — and like last year the final table will be decided by July but will reconvene on November 6 on ESPN.

After a slight dip the previous week, online poker traffic was up a healthy 3.7 percent last week with nine of the top ten sites showing an increase. For the industry as a whole, there has been a steady 14 percent annual rate climb so far in 2010.

Poker Pro Van Marcus lost his Ferrari F430 Spider the night of May 14, and not because of a bad beat either.

Marcus' car was stolen in the mother of all valet blunders. Marcus was inside the Crown Casino located in Melbourne, Australia at about 12.30 a.m. when a man wearing a flannel shirt and tracksuit pants was handed the keys to the king of chick magnets.

Casino spokesperson Gary O'Neill didn't say how a man walked up and got the keys to a over $400,000 car that wasn't his, but did go over the procedue all Valet's must follow at the Crown Casino.

"It has happened in the past from time to time that people lose their tickets, and in these circumstances we ask for proof of identification and a valid driver's licence. Those procedures were followed on this occasion," he said.

Luckily for Marcus about six hours later the Ferrari was recovered at the Caltex service station in Barry Road, Coolaroo, on Melbourne's outer northern edge.

Marcus, who is buddies with World Series winner Joe Hachem, talked about the mishap on Facebook — he wasn't too happy.

"Well at least I hold the record for the first Ferrari ever stolen in Australia..right outside crown casino Valet lol f*k my life!!," he wrote.

It was a far cry from his biggest poker tournament win to date in 2009, when he pocketed $162,857 at the Pokerstars Asian Pacific Poker Tour event in Manila.

Marcus recently took home $162,857 at the Asian Pacific Poker Tour event in Manila.

For anyone interested in the Main Event it still requires a $10,000 buy-in — check out the Bodog Poker room to see how you could get your buy-in for free as a Team Bodog Member — and like last year the final table will be decided by July but will reconvene on November 6 on ESPN.

Does President Barack Obama have a secret agenda? Is our poker loving president hoping to fill the High Courts with other likeminded players who appreciate the skill and beauty of the game? Take a look at Obama’s latest nomination of a Supreme Court judge – Elena Kagan and you’ll see what we mean.

Recent amendments to the Hungarian Gambling Act have put many local poker clubs out of business as a result of heavy-handed regulation and excessive taxes on poker winnings.

The new rules imposed a maximum limit on poker club profits at 15% of turnover in addition to a 30% tax on revenue.

Under the Gambling Act, the government is required to have majority ownership and control of gambling establishments, and it is unlikely to accept with alacrity that masses of poker players have moved over to playing online on a tax-free and unregulated basis.

With the newly elected conservative government under Fidesz coming to power for the first time in eight years, there is however suspicion that further measures will be introduced to tax and regulate gambling online. Erik Bánki, the Hungarian parliament's sports and tourism committee chairperson, has already expressed interest in the Danish and Norwegian measures to block unlicensed websites in an interview last February. However there is at present no licensing system for domestic online gambling websites in Hungary, the practice being banned at present.

A Online Poker bot, or Poker 'Robot', is a software that is normally hooked up to an Online Poker Site, and makes decisions about the current hand that is being played.

The program used to automatically play poker in an Internet poker game. It is programmed to play in a certain way based on mathematical formulas. Hour after hour, as long as the game continues, the poker bot plays tirelessly on.

If you get caught using another poker bot you'd receive a message like "Poker robots are not allowed, please contact our support for more info." and you'd have to shut down the bot and restart the poker site. They will NOT suspend your account for using a bot.

But remember, Don't use them

High stakes poker pro Phil Ivey seems to have glided effortlessly into second place of top money winners at Full Tilt Poker for 2010, after accumulating $579,000 in winnings on the site last week.

Although Ivey has put in less hours than many of his fellow pros at Full Tilt Poker’s virtual felts of late, he has been devastatingly efficient with his time when he has made an appearance.

This was clearly demonstrated by last weeks effort, when he won $579,000 over a mere 1,474 hands played to take him just behind Tom “durrrr” Dwan on Full Tilt’s profit leaderboard for 2010.

(Fellow pro and business associate Howard Lederer has placed a $5 million prop bet with Ivey that he would not be able to add another two WSOP bracelets to his tally by the end of the 2011 season. Considering Ivey picked up a further 2 WSOP bracelets at last year’s event and is expected to enter around 40 events this year, Ivey will surely be giving Lederer plenty of opportunities to sweat his wager over the upcoming weeks.) 😄

NBC aired the elite eight of the National Heads-Up Poker Championship on Sunday. Four of the eight poker pros were World Series of Poker bracelet winners. The tournament wraps up this Sunday, May 23rd, on NBC.

Eight-time WSOP bracelet holder Erik Seidel took Peter Eastgate to school in their matchup. Eastgate lost pots of $30,000 and $40,000 to be down 10-1 in chips. On the final hand Eastgate committed his stack with Q-7; Seidel held K-6 of diamonds. The board came 7-10-5-K-5, giving Seidel a pair of kings and a trip to the final four.

Scotty Nguyen and Jason Mercier were the second pair to go head-to-head. Nguyen garnered a 3-1 lead over Mercier, later prompting Mercier to go all-in pre-flop with 7-5 of clubs. Unfortunately Mercier could not draw out on Nguyen’s pocket jacks. Nguyen faces Seidel in the semifinals when they resume this Sunday.

Doyle Brunson suffered some early losses in his matchup against Dennis Phillips and couldn't recover. He was knocked out when he went all-in on a flush draw on a flop of K-Q-9 with two diamonds, Brunson held a 9 and 7 of diamonds. Phillips held A-K for top pair and bet 27,000. Brunson moved all-in and Phillips called. The turn and river were both clubs, and Phillips moved on.

In the final matchup Annie Duke and Jerry Yang faced off. It was a heated, even contest throughout. On the final hand Yang was all-in with J-3 against Duke’s A-8. Both players paired their top card on a flop of J-2-A, but a 10 and 9 on the turn and river but Duke in the Semis against Phillips.

The deadline for the implementation of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act is getting nearer, and due to this the Treasury Department and Federal Reserve Board has received a petition from the PPA or Poker Players Alliance. The PPA has asked the board to make clarifications on the regulation on Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act specifically on the exemption of peer-to-peer games like poker from their restrictive policies..........

In a New York District Court this week, Australian online poker payment processor Daniel Tzvetkoff has plead not guilty to processing millions of dollars in transactions for the Internet gambling sector.

He argued that poker is not gambling, however. Instead, he says that poker is a game of skill. It's about wit, not luck.

Tzvetkoff is charged with bank fraud conspiracy, money laundering, gambling conspiracy and money laundering conspiracy and faces up to 75 years in prison.
