Playtech, the online gambling software group, has abandoned plans to spend €95m (£77m) buying a group of social gaming assets from its largest shareholder, Israeli entrepreneur Teddy Sagi. The company, which is seeking to graduate from Aim to the main market by the summer, said on Wednesday it had dropped the acquisitions in favour of a software license agreement for the unnamed assets.

A spokesman for Playtech denied there had been a shareholder backlash over the proposals, which analysts warned at the time would “disappoint” investors due to the related party nature of the transactions.

The spokesman said the process of securing shareholder approval for the deal, announced on April 17, through an EGM would have had a “stalling effect” on the company’s progress towards a premium listing.

The finale will also feature performances from Justin Beiber, Flo Rida, Lady Antebellum and Hall and Oates, so there is a little something for everyone. I often read articles that keep mentioning that online gambling could be the Zynga (ZNGA) salvation. It won't happen and can't happen and seems to be a marketing ploy. Perhaps in 10 years after all of the State and Federal laws change, online gambling might happen for Zynga.

If online gambling could happen, every casino on the Las Vegas strip would have made it available through their websites many years ago. The hype seems to center around Wynn resort and Casino (WYNN) and Zynga's poker game. Zynga and Wynn entertained the idea, a few blog posts were made about the rumors and now the topic appears in many online articles.

The first licences to offer online gambling in Germany have been awarded, with British online betting firm Betfair - which holds several Maltese online gaming licences - benefiting from the state of Schleswig Holstein's liberalised gambling rules.

The northern state, whose centre-right coalition government voted in favour of relaxing its gambling laws in September, said on Thursday that it had awarded three licences valid to 2018 - one to Betfair for sports betting, one to Germany's Jaxx AG and one to the state lottery.

The other 15 German states have backed more restrictive laws that have been criticised by betting companies, who say they will favour state monopolies. The European Commission has also raised questions over the planned restrictions.

Government officials and anti-graft experts said they believe encouraging Internet users to submit tips about possible instances of corruption is an effective way to combat the issue.

The experts' comments came after five police officers in Qinzhou, a port city in south China's Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, were put on trial last month for acting as a "protective umbrella" for local gambling venues and collecting "protection fees" from them.

A February post in an online forum for local affairs in Qinzhou revealed that several officers at a local police station took bribes from the illegal casinos and gave them information about possible police raids.

A probe conducted by the local procuratorate in Qinzhou verified the claims in the post, with several suspects arrested after the investigation concluded.

The Internet is acting as a new and important channel for corruption reporting, said Zhao Qiyang, an official from Guangxi's regional discipline inspection agency.

N’Jikam is coming off victories over decent competition in Giovanni Lorenzo and Avtandil Khurtsidze but should have a much easier day at the office against Bursak. He was unable to finish his last two opponents but is expected to have enough power to stop Bursak before the final bell. As long as he doesn’t make any serious mistakes he should cruise to victory.

Bursak (24-0-1) may have and impressive record in his native Ukraine but he will be taking a big step up in competition when he faces N’Jikam this Friday night. It will be first time he steps into the ring outside of his country and he will be giving up edges to N’Jikam in the areas of power and movement.

For Bursak to win he’ll need to bring a heavy pace and land a big shot that could affect the direction of the fight. He’ll need to stay out of the range of N’Jikam’s power shots and counter-punch with as much success as he possibly can.

Classical singer Katherine Jenkins and Mark Ballas have been a powerhouse for most of the season and still pulled out a great performance during Classical Week, which should have been right up Jenkins’ alley. But they were upstaged by Extra host Maria Menounos and Derek Hough, who received a perfect score of 30 from the trio of judges. Even though Jenkins is likely to still be favored as she was coming into Classical Week, Menounos showed that she is going to have something to say about it before the competition is through.

Remember, next week is a double-elimination special, which means two couples will be going home, so that means the intensity is going to only heat up and that should make for an exciting week on Dancing With The Stars.

AN ONLINE gaming firm has revealed that it will break into profit this year and double the size of its workforce as it continues to push into the giant American market.

FanDuel, which changed its name from “HubDub” so that it would match the title of its main product, will take its headcount up to 45 this year, with most of its staff based in Edinburgh.

Despite raising $1.3 million (£819,000) just last month from existing investors, including Pentech Ventures and Piton Capital, the company already wants to bring in further funding this year to increase the scale of its US business.

FanDuel is a fantasy sports game that allows online betting but is exempt from the United States’ strict online gambling laws because it is classified as a game of skill, not of chance. Sports covered by the website include American football, baseball, basketball and ice hockey.

Coming into this week’s theme of “Songs from the 1960s/Brit-Pop”, Skylar Laine from Mississippi had odds of 7/1 to win the competition, but her versions of Dusty Springfield’s “You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me” and Credence Clearwater Revival’s “Fortunate Son” didn’t go over so well and she landed in the bottom two with Hollie Cavanagh, who is no stranger to that position as she has been there in five of the last six weeks. Louisiana’s Josh Ledet (5/1) has been hanging and has only been in the bottom two or three twice, most recently three weeks ago, but he doesn’t have the chops to compete with Phillips or Sanchez unless they have a bad day, which can happen; remember, Sanchez needed the judges’ save in the same week that Ledet was in the bottom three. As for Cavanagh, it seems to be only a matter of time before she is eliminated, but you never know as American Idol is full of surprises.

A prominent Republican lawmaker from Norfolk wants the state Gaming Commission to delay the hiring of Carl Stanley McGee, to allow the panel to independently investigate sexual assault allegations brought against McGee by a teenager in Florida in 2007. In a letter slated for delivery to the commission on Monday morning, state Rep. Daniel Winslow asked the panel to stay the hiring of McGee, 43, for a week to allow for an independent inquiry into the accusations.
