It’s Black-Friday-esque in Belgium, as the country adds more online poker sites to a list of blocked service providers. In the latest campaign to tighten up on online gambling regulations, the Belgium Gaming Commission has blocked some of the most beloved sites providing online poker services to residents of the country such as Bwin, William Hill, Stan James, Betsson, Betfair, Betclic, and Bet-at-home. Previously blacklisted were Titan, 888, and Everest, despite the fact that some of the sites offer Belgium-specific gateways. Internet service providers are now required to block Belgian Internet users from accessing any of these websites, all of which offer real money online poker.
The Belgian government claims they are only acting in this way to protect the interests of the citizens of Belgium from unlicensed and illegal websites. By blacklisting these companies, it opens up opportunity for those brands that do apply for licensure to operate within the country legally.
Recently the Antiguan government sat down with U.S. trade representatives, effectively begging for mercy, as the U.S. decision to ignore the WTO ruling on Internet gambling services has decimated the Antiguan economy. Antigua has also threatened to sue the U.S. government for persecuting gambling operators in the country, Calvin Ayre being the most recent. While Antigua has right to be upset with U.S. actions in the long, drawn out battle, it can’t fully excuse itself for the current situation. To understand, one must go back to the early 1990s.

Six leaders from South Korea's biggest Buddhist order have quit after secret video footage showed some supposedly serene monks raising hell, playing high-stakes poker , drinking and smoking.
The scandal erupted just days before Koreans observe a national holiday to celebrate the birth of Buddha, the holiest day of the religion's calendar . The head of the Jogye order , which has some 10 million followers, or about a fifth of the population, made a public apology on Friday, vowing "self-repentance" .
South Korean TV networks aired shots of monks playing poker, some smoking and drinking, after gathering at a luxury lakeside hotel in late April for a fellow monk's memorial service.
"The stakes for 13 hours of gambling were more than $875,300," Seongho, a senior monk said. He said he had reported the incident to prosecutors . Gambling outside of licensed casinos and horse racing tracks is illegal in South Korea and frowned upon by religious leaders.
"Basically, Buddhist rules say don't steal. Look at what they did, they abused money from Buddhists for gambling ," Seongho said.
The behaviour of the supposedly abstemious monks has led to Korean media speculation of a power split within the order. The wayward monks appear to have upset many in Korea. "Monks who gamble, drink and smoke are tainted in the eyes of all people in the nation," civic group Buddhist Solidarity for Reform s aid.
We’re down to the final three contestants on the 11th season of American Idol as a competitor that has been on the edge of elimination for a few weeks finally fell off. But with fewer people tuning in to the show, the overall future of American Idol is cloudy.
Coming into the week, 18-year-old Hollie Cavanagh was an 18/1 longshot to win the show and she had been in the bottom two or three for five of the last six weeks, but her fortune ran out this week as she was sent home to leave three left standing; 21-year-old Phil Phillips (7/5), 16-year-old Jessica Sanchez (2/1) and 20-year-old Josh Ledet (2/1), who is now in the mix to get the boot next as Phillips and Sanchez have dominated the lines all season. Sanchez has been a little lucky herself as the judges used their one save of the season on her, and she has bounced back to show why they thought so highly of her. Ledet will have to pull out his best performance of the season if he wants to go onto the final night.

When it comes to so-called "sin" taxes, Mississippi has a long track record of contradictory political and public policy behavior.
Despite Mississippi's status as the "gold buckle of the Bible Belt" and a politically active evangelical clergy with clout at the state Capitol, state taxpayers enjoy fruits of the "wages of sin" to the tune of some $536 million annually in various taxes collected on gambling, drinking and smoking. The sale of "sin tax" items also generates additional sales taxes that exceed another $100 million.
Gaming in the last fiscal year generated $277.8 million in taxes in the form of $130.9 million to county and municipal governments and the state's portion of $146.9 million. Overall, gaming provided 3 percent of general fund revenues. Tobacco taxes generated $158 million or 4 percent of the general fund. Alcoholic beverage taxes generated $71 million, but $8.6 million went to county and municipal government, leaving $63 million or 1 percent of general fund revenues for the state.

Substantial investor rebellions against executive pay at industrial ceramics group Cookson and online gambling giant 888 Holdings are expected this week, as the "shareholder spring" continues unabated.
The leading shareholder voting advisory bodies, the Association of British Insurers and Pirc, have issued damning statements over the two companies' pay policies.
In the past, such advice has generally gone unheeded, but huge votes against remuneration of executives at the likes of insurer Aviva, media group Trinity Mirror, and car dealership Pendragon have shown that investor attitudes have changed.

Roll up, roll up for week five of the hunting season everybody's compelled to call "the shareholder spring". The main attractions this time will see the stocks loaded with all the directors of science firm Cookson (vote against the lot, says advisory body Pirc) as well as online gambling group 888.
So where next? More director floggings for sure, but outside the boardroom there's a clutch of faceless City operators beginning to worry the mob will notice them. Fund managers, many of whom have been paid handsomely to lose us our money, are an obvious target, as are the corporate brokers retained to inform boards.

US President Barack Obama took a calculated gamble and stepped into the political unknown with his firm public backing for gay marriage, after a long period of personal soul-searching.
Mr Obama’s move, in an interview with ABC News, sent seismic waves through pre-election politics and sparked immediate speculation as to whether he has hindered his chances of winning a second term in November.
But it also led his election foe Mitt Romney and his Republicans on to tricky ground, as the party’s social conservative base opposes same sex marriage, even as it becomes quickly more accepted across the broader political spectrum.
“I’ve just concluded, for me, personally, it is important to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married,” Mr Obama said, unveiling his bombshell.

As if placing bets with a click of the mouse is not easy enough, gambling websites are now luring Malaysians by offering wagers from as low as RM8.
While online betting on sports has become a norm among punters, with football being the main draw, brash gambling websites have widened the field for bets, including areas such as politics and entertainment.
Links on social media sites lead to portals where users would have to register with a minimum deposit of RM50 via online transfer, ATMs, credit cards or cash deposit machines.

The Gambling & Betting Activities industry, although in a much better place than 10 years ago, has not fared well during the past five years. The financial crisis following indoor smoking bans introduced the year before, started a decline in revenue and profit that the industry is only just starting to recover from. Consequently, IBISWorld estimates that revenue will decline at an annualised 0.7% in the five years through 2012-13. While in a healthier economic environment major events would encourage industry growth and profit, persistent negative conditions are expected to reduce and negate the positive effects that the London Olympic Games may bring. The negative conditions that surround the industry are expected to dissipate slowly over the next five years, with the expectation of a recovery as general economic conditions help raise disposable incomes. IBISWorld forecasts that over the five years through 2017-18, industry revenue will return to growth. For these reasons, industry research firm IBISWorld has updated its report on the Gambling & Betting Activities in the UK industry.

The opening of the first of four Ohio casinos will test the promise of new jobs, a tax windfall and urban revival in the heart of the Rust Belt.
New signs are up to direct visitors, the sidewalks have been power-washed, crosswalks have been freshly painted and 1,600 people have been hired to inaugurate the Horseshoe Casino Cleveland on Monday.
But don't look for a Las Vegas-style casino with outsized fountains or attractions meant to look like New York or Paris: the Cleveland casino projects an image of no-nonsense Midwest values.
Tucked into four floors of the old Higbee department store, which starred in the 1983 film "A Christmas Story," the casino doesn't stand out amid the downtown skyscrapers. Only understated signs and flags with the Horseshoe logo hint at the art-deco revival look inside.
"It almost makes you want to get dressed up, put on a tuxedo or ball gown and come here," said Jeff Cohen, a principal of Rock Gaming, a partner in the casino with Caesars Entertainment.
And gamble.

Gambling support groups say they will target young people as part of a campaign to raise awareness about problem gambling.
The Responsible Gambling Advocacy Centre will hold events across Victoria as part of responsible gambling awareness week.
Support groups say more young people are gambling than ever before.
The centre says nearly 80 per cent of people aged 10 to 24 have participated in some form of gambling and the number of young people with gambling issues is on the rise.
Nevada’s Gaming Policy Advisory Committee heard from security experts on Monday about ways to keep kids and cheaters away from internet gaming sites. The industry needs to put in place “protection from fraudsters and youngsters,” Gaming Commission Chairman Peter Berhard concluded.
Not that the state is likely to approve any internet gaming sites in the near future. Federal law still prohibits online gambling, and the state’s recently-adopted regulations specify that licenses can be issued only when that ban is lifted.

To prime itself for the U.S. debut of legal online poker, MGM Resorts International, owner of such Las Vegas Strip monuments as the MGM Grand, the Bellagio and the Mirage, wanted a partner that knew the ropes.
So last October it hooked up with Bwin.Party Digital Entertainment Plc, a London-listed, Gibraltar-based specialist that rakes in more from Web betting than any other publicly traded company. MGM Resorts took 25 percent of a new venture 65 percent owned by Bwin.Party, with smaller Las Vegas casino operator Boyd Gaming getting the remaining 10 percent.
"We'll be out of the gate as soon as anybody," MGM Resorts Chief Executive Officer Jim Murren boasted to investors in February.
Online expertise isn't the only thing that distinguishes Bwin.Party. In 2009, an earlier incarnation of the company paid $105 million while admitting to U.S. prosecutors it had run an illegal gambling operation and engaged in bank and wire fraud.
