Full Tilt’s traffic has rebounded strongly since the holiday period, the latest traffic data shows, establishing a 30% lead in cash game traffic against its nearest competitor, PartyPoker.

The week before Christmas, PartyPoker briefly overtook Full Tilt following the merger of its bwin and Party player pools.

As the dust settled, however, Full Tilt regained its second place spot, and has since increase its margin following an impressive boost in the first week of 2013.

The seven day moving average of cash game players tracked by PokerScout now shows Full Tilt stabilizing its player base at around 5400 with Party substantially behind with approximately 3600.

The traffic spike at Full Tilt can be at least partially explained by fresh January promotions, including new reload bonuses and Happy Hours promos. The miniFTOPS XXI could also be having a positive impact on the cash-game tables. The a 35-event low buy in-tournament series kicked off on Sunday.

PartyPoker’s January promotion is targeted more at recreational players, with $300k in freeroll tournament prizes available throughout the month.

Full Tilt saw a protracted decline in traffic in the two months following its relaunch, but this decline has now found its plateau. For the resurgent PartyPoker, it will now look towards its “all-new” PartyPoker software, due in the next few months, to close the gap further.

This second place battle is, of course, dwarfed by market leader PokerStars, which boasts 3 times the traffic of both FTP and Party combined. The relaunch of Full Tilt has had surprisingly little effect on Stars traffic, which now represents over 50% of the entire real-money cash-game market.

Ake Cody, the youngest player to win poker’s Triple Crown, has been named the newest member of Team PokerStars Pro.

“It has been a long term goal for a while now,” Cody is quoted as saying. “For it to finally happen feels like a dream come true.”

He called it “the holy grail of poker sponsorship.”

Cody is one of only four players to win an EPT, WPT and WSOP event, referred to as poker’s triple crown. He took down the €5k EPT Deauville for $1.2m in January 2010, the £5k WPT London for 430k in August 2010 and the $25k WSOP Heads-Up Championship for $851,192 in May 2011.

Cody was previously sponsored by UK-based PKR, a niche online poker room with UK focus.

Now 24, Cody was in the Bahamas to play the $10k PCA Main Event when the announcement was made. He joins the likes of Daniel Negreanu, Jason Mercier and Vanessa Selbst as well as fellow British Team Pros Vicky Coren and Liv Boeree.

Cody has collected more than $3m in live tournament winnings throughout his young career, according to PokerStars.

Negreanu placed the PokerStars patch on Cody’s hoodie Tuesday.

“PokerStars always looks for young up-and-coming ambassadors for the game and I feel like we’ve found a gem,” Negreanu said. “He combines poker skill with a gentlemanly demeanor as is expected in a PokerStars Team Pro.”

PartyPoker will remove its top VIP tier, Palladium Elite, and remove all bonuses that give more than 30% effective rakeback, the company announced on its website last week.

The changes will come into effect on April 1.

Top-tier players are recommended to cash in any points on the highest value bonuses possible by March 31. Players also have until this time to reach Palladium Elite so they can access the high bonuses in the store.

“We believe the change will allow us to manage our poker room more effectively and ultimately allow for fairer distribution of bonuses across the network,” a Party Poker representative explained in the announcement.

PartyPoker currently offers five different VIP tiers: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Palladium and Palladium Elite. Players achieve Palladium levels by reaching a certain number of points in a calendar quarter.

Achieving Elite allows players to spend 300k points on either $50k instant cash, the equivalent of 33% rakeback, or a $75k bonus with a play-through requirement, worth 50% rakeback.

With the addition of other monthly promotions, players can often reach up to 65% rakeback or more, making it comparable to PokerStars Supernova Elite status.

Elite VIP players also receive a “bespoke concierge service” and a “dedicated VIP host,” according to the website.

From April, this level will be removed. The $20k and $75k poker bonuses will be also removed from the store, as will the $50k instant cash offer.

The change may bring a some benefit to existing Palladium players. Currently their top bonus is $3k for 30% rakeback, with a play through requirement. Come April, they will should have access to the $15k instant cash bonus, which currently is only open to Elites.
“Optimizing the Poker Ecology”

Bwin.party originally hinted that it was shifting its stance on its approach to courting high volume players back in August 2012. In its half-year financial results, the group announced a comprehensive plan to “optimize the poker ecology” and refocus on the recreational player.

“Rebalance bonus packages in favor of recreational players” was one part of “phase 1,” which also included the removal of high stakes tables, already implemented, and the introduction of its fast-fold poker product, which went live later in the year.

There has been no announcement yet of increases at the lower tiers as part of the “rebalance” strategy.

Also part of its four-phase plan was the merger of its two player pools, which it completed just before Christmas. It briefly put the network ahead of Full Tilt Poker in terms of cash game traffic.

It it also touting its “all new poker platform,” which was originally slated for a Q1 release. The latest financial statement is now predicting its debut in the first half of the year.

The owner of the world's largest online poker website wants to add a brick-and-mortar casino to its portfolio.

Rational Group US Holdings, the parent company of PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker, is asking New Jersey casino regulators for permission to buy the Atlantic Club Casino Hotel for an undisclosed amount. If approved, the deal would mark the first purchase of an Atlantic City casino by an Internet gambling company.

The company, based in Isle of Man, promises to invest in the Atlantic City casino to help the struggling seaside gambling resort.

"Rational US is a willing and enthusiastic prospective purchaser, and it intends to improve the financial viability of the property, and therefore the offerings available in Atlantic City," the firm wrote in its application to New Jersey casino regulators. "The purchase will improve the overall economic and competitive conditions of Atlantic City and the state of New Jersey, as the current owner of the company has, for a considerable period of time, been marketing the property for sale."

The company's application to New Jersey regulators was first reported by The Press of Atlantic City. A purchase agreement was reached Dec. 21.

In a joint statement, Michael Frawley, the casino's chief operating officer, and Eric Hollreiser, a spokesman for Rational, confirmed the proposed sale.

"The acquisition of The Atlantic Club Casino Hotel will secure up to 2,000 jobs and maintain the economic benefits the casino brings to New Jersey," their statement read. "During this interim period, the Atlantic Club Casino Hotel will operate as normal under current management, which will be retained following completion of the acquisition." Rational would buy the casino from Resorts International Holdings, an affiliate of Los Angeles-based hedge fund Colony Capital LLC. Colony has owned the casino since 2005 as it has struggled badly in Atlantic City's cutthroat market, which is suffering from increased competition from casinos in neighboring states.

The Atlantic Club ranks 10th out of Atlantic City's 12 casinos in terms of gambling revenue. It's take from gamblers declined by 11 percent last year, to $127.2 million. It posted a $13.6 million gross operating loss through the first nine months of last year.

The proposed deal will be scrutinized closely. State lawmakers have passed a bill that would authorize Internet gambling, but Republican Gov. Chris Christie hasn't acted on it.

Last year, PokerStars paid $547 million to settle money laundering charges from a U.S. government crackdown on illegal Internet gambling. It admitted no wrongdoing and is allowed to operate in states where online gambling is legal.

Rational is seeking from the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement interim casino authorization, which is preliminary approval to move forward with the purchase. It would then need approval from the New Jersey Casino Control Commission to complete the purchase.

On its website, Rational describes PokerStars as the world's largest online poker site, with more than 50 million registered members. Since December 2001, the company says, more than 85 billion hands have been played on its site.

Going into Tuesday, Gus Hansen was on a big, yet rare upswing on Full Tilt Poker. However, after the day was over, the persistent Danish pro had lost close to $1 million.

According to HighstakesDB, Hansen lost the sum over more than 2,700 hands of play.

For much of the day, Hansen was engaged in a huge $1,500-$3,000 limit deuce-to-seven triple draw battle against Alex “Alexonmoon” Luneau. Nothing seemed to go Hansen’s way.

The tables were so completely lopsided at one point that Hansen was down to just a few thousand bucks while his opponent was sitting pretty with more than $600,000.

Hansen was vocal numerous times about his frustration. He remarked in the chat box after one spot, “Sorry I beat you this hand, you got really unlucky.” The poker pro added that Luneau’s rush was “beautiful to watch”. However, he kept on playing.

Although he was able to recoup a significant chunk of his money from Luneau, Hansen was also in a bloodbath against unknown SallyWoo at $2,000-$4,000 limit Omaha eight-or-better. After hundreds of hands, Hansen’s opponent had more than $700,000.

In addition to Hansen, Full Tilt pro Viktor “Isildur1” Blom had a poor day. According to HighstakesDB, he lost more than $400,000 Tuesday and now sits with about $3 million in profits for the year. He was once up more than $5 million on 2013.

While Hansen and Blom have been extremely active on the software, fellow site sponsored pro Tom “durrrr” Dwan hasn’t been grinding day in and day out lately. However, he has managed to lose more than $500,000 on the year so far, according to HighstakesDB data.

Hansen (about $3.5 million) and Dwan (about $1.5 million) are the two largest losers on Full Tilt since the site relaunched worldwide, except in the United States, on Nov. 6.

Following his appointment, Mr Askenazi commented: “With PokerStars, the Rational Group has built a stellar reputation by continually raising the bar with high-quality, trusted products while delivering best-in-class customer support and service. Ravi Askenazi boasts an impressive track record in the industry and worked for four years at IT development company SQLink before being appointed the Chief Operations Officer (COO) at Playtech. PokerStars has inked a deal with Olympique Lyonnais, one of the most popular football clubs in France.

The new deal means that team supporters can participate in a daily tournament on PokerStars.fr to win VIP seats for games, “access to players during warm-up,” team souvenirs and tournament tickets, according to a news release from PokerStars.

Often referred to as Lyon or OL, the football club is one of the most popular in France and plays in the premier French division, Ligue 1.

The partnership allows PokerStars to advertise on olweb.fr, the club’s television channel and at Stade de Gerland during games.

“During the season, many more activities will take place between PokerStars and Olympique Lyonnais,” PokerStars spokesman Mark Stuart said.

The agreement is a sign of the expanding global reach of PokerStars, which branched further into the sporting world last year when it signed Rafa Nadal to Team SportsStars.

France is the only market in which PokerStars is not the market leader. Winamax overtook PokerStars.FR in early 2012 and strengthened its lead over the course of the year.

The original Irish arm of Full Tilt Poker, rescued by a rival last year following a US lawsuit, has been placed in liquidation owing creditors a reported €3 million.

Rival PokerStars took over Full Tilt, whose service hub is in Dublin, last August, following a court settlement in New York that involved paying about €600 million to the poker site’s former players and a complete split from its previous owners.

It emerged yesterday that Declan McDonald of accountancy firm PricewaterhouseCoopers has been appointed liquidator to Pocket Kings Ltd, one of the Irish-based subsidiaries that provided services to the original Full Tilt operation, whose main customer base was in the US.

It is understood the company owes about €3 million to creditors, mainly trade and suppliers, and is liable for some inter-group debts.

Former directors have provided a statement of affairs and PricewaterhouseCoopers is contacting creditors.

Full Tilt began trading again last year. The website, not now available in the US, is now part of the Isle-of-Man-based Rational Group, which also owns PokerStars.

An Irish subsidiary, Rational FT, based in Full Tilt’s old offices in Cherrywood in Co Dublin, began hiring staff in the final months of 2012.

It employs about 200 people who provide back-up services and marketing to the Full Tilt website. A spokesman said yesterday the site is trading well.

Full Tilt’s former chief executive Raymond Bitar is facing criminal charges in the US alleging he was involved in siphoning off about $400 million belonging to the site’s members. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

In 2011, a New York prosecutor accused former Full Tilt executives and shareholders of siphoning players’ funds. A court-approved settlement allowed Full Tilt’s takeover by PokerStars.

The roster of poker pros signing up to become instructors at IveyPoker continues to grow and the latest to add his expertise to the newly formed training website is none other than Daniel Shak. Despite being primarily a hedge fund manager Shak is also a talented high stakes poker hobbyist, who in 2010 donated 10% of his winnings to a number of different charities.

The founder of SHK Management has managed to amass an impressive $4,111,718 in live tournaments since 2004 with his list of accolades including victory in 2010 at the A$100k Aussie Millions Poker Championship for A$1,200,000 ($1,107,553). Shak has even managed to start 2013 off on a high note and on January 5th cashed in 8th place at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure $98k Super High Roller for $228,960. The ‘amateur’ player said he was now only too happy to try his hand at being a poker instructor after being approached by Phil Ivey, a player he has the utmost respect for. Commenting on his decision to join IveyPoker-com, Shak explained:

“I have always insisted that poker is a hobby for me and have consistently turned down any business offers related to it. But when Phil asked me if I wanted to join Team Ivey, I was more than prepared to make an exception. Phil is not only a good friend, but also the best poker player in the world, if you ask me.”

Few would argue with Shak’s assessment of Ivey’s poker prowess. The 36 year old has earned a massive $17,542,475 from live tournaments in a career spanning 15 years, as well as a further $19,242,744 playing cash games online.

However, in a surprise move last year the usually secretive poker legend announced he was now ready to teach the world how to play better poker and since then Ivey has been busy putting together an impressive line-up of pros at his soon to launch IveyPoker-com.

PokerStars has set a date for the inauguration of PokerStars LIVE Poker Room in Hippodrome Casino, one of the major land casinos in London. The launch of PokerStars’ live poker room in the Hippodrome Casino was something the UK poker gaming community has been waiting for ever since PokerStars signed a partnership deal with the Hippodrome Casino. PokerStars has signed quite a few partnership deals with land casinos worldwide in a bid to expand into the brick-and-mortar poker gaming sector. So far, the operator had been focusing only on online poker. PokerStars is also ensuring its smooth re-entry into the US market by attempting to purchase a struggling land casino in New Jersey. If New Jersey legalizes and regulates online poker, PokerStars can consider itself well inside the US market. Nothing much is known about the expected launch of PokerStars LIVE Poker Room in the Hippodrome, but the online poker room has confirmed that the launch is scheduled for March 4, after which poker players are free to use the sophisticated facilities in the new poker room.

PokerStars Live Poker Room will provide poker gaming services round the clock, and poker enthusiasts can look forward to a wide choice of daily poker tournaments and cash games and plenty of significant live poker events.

The UKIPT’s London leg is scheduled to be the first major poker tournament to be held at The Hippodrome. It is expected to begin on April 12. Speaking about the event, Kirsty Thompson, president and head (live rooms Europe) for UKIPT, said: “The Hippodrome Casino is the premier casino destination in London. Establishing this permanent PokerStars LIVE room will give more players the opportunity to play cash poker with the high-quality player experience that PokerStars is known for.”

Expressing his opinions, Hippodrome Casino Chairman Simon Thomas said that the new PokerStars LIVE Poker Room has been designed to give players the best possible poker gaming experience. He said, “The poker room’s luxury interior design has been developed to take poker to a new level,” adding that “it’s location in the ‘Gods’ is unique and our ambition is to create a fabulous environment in which to play poker.”

One of the most thrilling features of PokerStars LIVE Poker Room is that it will give players opportunities galore to qualify for prestigious online as well as live poker tournaments organized by PokerStars. Plenty of satellite qualifiers will be run in the new poker room.

Lee Jones, celebrated poker author and long-time PokerStars spokesperson, is moving into a new role as Head of Poker Communications at PokerStars.

Lee joins Eric Hollreiser, Head of Corporate Communications and recently promoted Michael Josem, Head of PR.

His newly created role positions him as a key spokesman on poker issues for “internal and external audiences,” according to Monday’s press release.

“This new role will allow me to serve as the community’s representative to PokerStars, as well as PokerStars’ representative to the poker community,” Jones is quoted as saying.

Eric Hollreiser told pokerfuse: “Lee Jones will be an evangelist for PokerStars products and services, staying very involved in the product teams and serving as a spokesperson and ambassador for the game” to key audiences.

Lee has held a variety of high-profile roles in the poker industry. He is well known for his entertaining commentary at the Sunday Million final tables, authoring of “Winning Low-Limit Hold ‘em” and co-developer of the SAGE system for optimal Sit and Go heads up play.

Following four years as PokerStars Cardroom Manager, Jones moved on to be Executive Host of the European Poker Tour. A short stint with Cardrunners as Chief Operating Officer was followed by time as Cardroom Manager at Cake Poker. In 2010 he returned to PokerStars officially as Head of Home Games.

Lee will report to Eric alongside new Head of PR, Michael Josem. Josem is well known within the poker community for helping to expose the UltimateBet cheating scandal. He created the infamous chart showing the improbable win-rate of the “NioNio” superuser account. His role in this exposé led to him taking a job in security with PokerStars. Since Black Friday he has had the unenviable job of ensuring that players from the USA cannot play on PokerStars.

His new appointment should be much more friendly; Eric Hollreiser told pokerfuse that he will work “closely with industry reporters to ensure that we are providing consistent, accurate and reliable content, information and news.”

Full Tilt Poker is completely revamping its tournaments schedule to become the only online poker site in the world to offer prize pool guarantees on every single tournament. During March, Full Tilt Poker will guarantee more than $25 million in tournament prize pools and will feature a full selection of satellites to allow smaller stakes players more chances to qualify for all the big guarantee events.

The new schedule, which starts February 25, features a staggeringly diverse range of tournaments including, exclusive to Full Tilt Poker, 28-30 Rush tournaments, 15-20 multi-entry events, 10-15 re-entry tournaments, and 6-8 multi-chance tournaments per day. Full Tilt Poker will also feature at least one guaranteed tournament every ten minutes and up to 225 guaranteed cash tournaments every single day.

From mid-March a brand new tournament lobby will make it even easier for players to find all the tournaments they’re interested in – as well as two new unique tournament formats.

Full Tilt Poker already offers one of the largest selection of tournaments of any online poker site, including regular re-entry, multi-entry, Rush, Knockout, Super Turbos, rebuy, Double Chance and Triple Chance tourneys.

Sarne Lightman, Head of Marketing at Full Tilt Poker, said: "From Rush tournaments to multi-entry events, Full Tilt Poker has always been the market leader in providing players with a huge range of diverse and innovative tournaments.

"Full Tilt Poker’s scheduled tournaments already offer round-the-clock action every day of the week with a wide range of buy-ins and guaranteed prize pools to choose from," Lightman continued. "The new schedule is another market first offering our players the only fully guaranteed schedule of any online site."

PokerStars has responded to a a legal brief filed by the American Gaming Association that seeks to prevent the global online poker leader from obtaining a gaming license in the state of New Jersey.

Rational Group, the parent company of PokerStars, issued a statement to pokerfuse in which Eric Hollreiser, Head of Corporate Communications remarked: “These are matters for expert regulators to determine, not self-interested partisans picking a public fight.”

Hollreiser also made a statement to Nathan Vardi at Forbes indicating that Caesars Entertainment, one of the largest contributors to the AGA, approached PokerStars with a deal to sell the Rio Casino in Las Vegas.

According to the report, Caesars said such a deal would have given the two companies “a better relationship” and would have helped PokerStars gain a license in Nevada.

In addition, Vardi reported that sources close to PokerStars revealed that the World Series of Poker brand was also on the table in that deal proposed just last month.

Pokerstars rejected the offer, according to Hollreiser.

Also in February, an unexpected bill was introduced in Nevada that sought to insert a “bad actor” clause into the states existing online poker provisions. As proposed, the clause would have blocked the operators—like PokerStars—that had offered real-money wagers to US customers after 2006 from receiving a license in Nevada for ten years.

The bill was modified to establish a five year wait period instead, and was signed into law by Governor Sandoval a week later.

Pokerstars is currently awaiting approval of the New Jersey Casino Control Commission and Division of Gaming Enforcement that would allow them to proceed with the purchase of the Atlantic Club Casino in New Jersey.
