Well, I guess he IS doing well. He won $287,500 in 2 days, so he's playing his "normal" stakes and doing quite well!

Poker players can always count on Full Tilt Poker for unique promotions. At the beginning of December, the popular online poker room launched its Short-Handed Happy Hour promotion, encouraging players to jump start empty or nearly empty tables.

Running through the end of January, Full Tilt players will earn double Full Tilt Points (FTPs) by playing in short-handed cash games. For the purposes of this promotion, Full Tilt defines “short-handed” as follows:

Six-Max tables – Three players or fewer
Eight-Max tables – Four players or fewer
Nine-Max tables – Five players or fewer

Heads-up tables are not included in the promotion, and for obvious reasons. The only possible way to have a short-handed heads-up table would be to have just one player seated, which would mean there would be no game. Rush Poker tables are also not included.

There are no specific times for Short-Handed Happy Hour; tables will be marked with the traditional Happy Hour smiley face whenever they are short-handed. If they are short-handed during what would normally be a Happy Hour time, players at the table will earn triple FTPs.

Remember that these extra Happy Hour points are considered bonus FTPs and therefore do not count towards points targets for promotions such as the Iron Man Challenge nor do they count towards clearing deposit bonuses. Only base FTPs earned at the tables count.

In cash games, FTPs are earned based on the amount of money raked from the pot. For each dollar raked, 10 points are awarded to the table. Those points are then split up equally among all players who were dealt cards in the hand. Players can earn points for playing in tournaments as well, but as already stated, only ring games count for the Short-Handed Happy Hour promotion.

(Full Tilt Poker currently ranks as the second largest poker room or network on the internet. It is a steep climb to the number one spot, however, as PokerStars has averaged 30,000 cash game players over the last seven days, compared to 17,000 for Full Tilt. On the bright side, it does not appear that Full Tilt will drop below that second spot any time soon. PartyPoker sits in third place with a seven-day average of just 3,850 cash game players, with the iPoker Network close behind with 3,750.)

PokerStars-com the worlds leading online poker platform, responded to the constant increasing demands of players and went into a series of recent improvements in the latest upgrade of the online poker platform’s software. The upgrades applied aim to make your poker action on PokerStars easier and more entertaining than ever.

The lobby has undergone some visual changes. PokerStars changed the main font theme to another which is more legible. The cash tables that have a waiting list now appear highlighted in bright blue and italic. Similarly, the cash table(s) where the player is already seated are displayed in bright red and italic. In any tournament the player is registered the column ‘state’ will be in bright red and italic.

Multi-tablers should be delighted as PokerStars has made easier the process of finding a table of a specific type. So when a player chooses to play on an already full table now there is a button labeled as ‘Find Seat ‘ instead of the old ‘Seat Me’. When you click it, PokerStars will find for you a vacant seat in a table of the same type! Players also have the opportunity to press Ctrl + S (keyboard shortcut) which has the same effect. Pressing Ctrl + S multiple times will allow players to choose more available tables of the same type making the multi-tabling poker experience easier than ever.

There are also some other points that PokerStars has improved in the latest upgrade. A general slider was added where you can adjust the volume of all sounds (Master Control) while there are also separate sliders for each type of sound for perfect tuning. This is accessible under the Options menu  Sound Settings.

PokerStars is now offering the possibility of a graphical representation of the Heads Up tournament in the Lobby, which shows the pairs of opponents and their progress in the tournament (winners / losers). This feature is currently available only when a tournament of this type has 64 or fewer poker players.

A new mixed game that combine the two most popular variations of poker; the No Limit Hold’em and the Pot Limit Omaha will begin to appear gradually during the month of December so don’t miss it. Also, in late December there will be announced some changes to the PokerStars VIP system so stay tuned with us.

Online gambling group PartyGaming Plc said overall revenue has been in-line with expectations, with a strong Q4 performance in casino mitigated by a softer seasonal performance in poker and bingo.

In its pre-close trading update, the group says the merger with Austria's bwin remains on course to complete in March.

Clean EBITDA margins for 2010 are expected to be in-line with previous guidance.

CEO Jim Ryan said revenues in the fourth quarter had enjoyed their usual seasonal upturn.

Casino had performed particularly strongly, with double-digit revenue growth over the third quarter, although currency movements meant the uplift in poker was less pronounced than usual.

The bwin merger should place the combined group in a strong position to take advantage of the changing regulatory landscape in Europe.

PartyGaming said there continued to be much movement in the US towards regulating online gaming, both at the Federal and State level.

Should legislation be enacted, the group was well advanced in discussions with licensed companies in the US that could create substantial value for shareholders.

Shares were up 3.5p at 221.5p.

On Thursday Anurag Dikshit, the former Party Poker boss, escaped jail for his part in offering games of online poker to US players, something which is outlawed by US federal regulations. Party Poker was once the biggest online poker site in the world but following arrests and indictments during 2008 Party Poker took the decision to stop offering real money games of online poker to US players. Following the issue of the charges against the Party Poker chief back in 2008, he voluntarily travelled to the US to enter a guilty plea to his charges and he also forfeited $300 million of the profits made from Party Poker offering games of online poker to US players. Dikshit also agreed to ‘cooperate in an ongoing investigation with federal prosecutors’ in a bid to appease US officials.

On Thursday a sentencing verdict was finally reached for the online gaming mogul, which saw him avoid a custodial sentence, instead receiving one year of probation. This certainly seems a fair result when the chiefs of other online poker sites are not being chased down and prosecuted, even when they reside within the US itself. Full Tilt continually breaks the very laws that saw Anurag Dikshit facing up to two years behind bars for and two of the men widely accepted as running Full Tilt, Christopher Ferguson and Howard Lederer, are US residents and would surely be easy to arrest.

Following the decision to stop serving US players Party Poker was knocked off the top spot by PokerStars and was also overtaken by Full Tilt, dropping Party Poker down the rankings to third. However, Party Poker is still a phenomenally successful poker site and should online poker become legal in the US Party Poker will be in the perfect position to reap their rewards.

Full Tilt Poker, one of the world's leading online poker rooms, has launched a new promotion that it hopes will entice people to play at tables that are nearly empty.
Short-Handed Happy Hour

Running through to the end of January, the Short-Handed Happy Hour promotion will guarantee double Full Tilt Points to players who participate in short-handed games.

Under the terms of the promotion, short-handed games are defined under three categories: Six-max tables, with three players or fewer; Eight-max tables, with four players or fewer; or Nine-max tables, with five players or fewer.

Short-handed tables will be easy to find, as they will carry the Happy Hour smiley face whenever they reach that status. And while the promotion will be run around the clock, the news is even better for those who find a short-handed table during regular Happy hour times, as the bonus is expanded to triple Full Tilt points. The one catch to remember is that short-handed points fall under the category of bonus Full Tilt points, and therefore cannot be used in promotions involving points targets or deposit bonuses.

Full Tilt Poker remains the second biggest online poker room after PokerStars, but it is promotions such as this that see it competing hard to get to that elusive number one spot.

As 2010 winds down, Full Tilt Poker continues to release updates to its software to improve the user experience. Arguably, Full Tilt Poker became the leader in the online poker industry in 2010 in terms of lobby and table software. Its latest update brings several brand new features to the world’s second largest online poker site.

The first major feature was the implementation of a new tournament type called “On Demand,” which are half sit and gos and half scheduled tournaments. The new tournament type kicks off just like how a sit and go works. However, players can still register late in the main tournament lobby. For now, the $2 180-man sit and gos, 54-man Super Turbo sit and gos, and the Rush Poker 135-man sit and gos have been converted to On Demand. Full Tilt Poker’s spokesperson, “FTPDoug,” said on PocketFives-com that depending on their popularity, the site might add more down the road.

On top of this new tournament feature, Full Tilt has tweaked how other multi-table sit and gos work. Instead of only one registering at a time, an empty one will always be registering, just like how single-table sit and gos work. This should make it a lot easier for players to join however many tournaments they want to play right away. Only the sit and go with the most number of players will show up at the top of the Tournament lobby; the rest can be found inside the Sit and Go lobby.

One new feature inside the lobby is the addition of time zones for the game clock. Previously, the clock was hardwired to always display ET, but now you can set it to your local time zone. Right now, this only works within the Full Tilt software; web pages will still show ET as the default time. Players should also note that Iron Man days still work under ET.

One more major update for tournament players is the addition of the default “Auto Add-On” setting for tournaments. Now, you don’t have to check it at the start of every tournament. You can now also rebuy any time during the add-on period. That means you can late register at any point until the end of the add-on and still complete your rebuy and add-on.

One nuisance that cash game players dealt with was the constant announcements of tournaments in the chat box window. You can now adjust that setting because a new “Disable Tournament Announcements” feature has been added. Full Tilt Poker has also changed late game registration. Now, when you late register and get moved tables before paying your big blind, you’ll be dealt in right away at your new table assuming you aren’t between the blinds. Also, the “Must Wait for Big Blind” rule has been eliminated for Super Turbos. On top of that, the check, bet, raise, fold, and call action messages are all smaller in size to allow the pot to still display a player’s stack information. This way, you don’t always have to hover your mouse over a player’s spot at the table to see their stack size.

Tournament players will also enjoy the new automatic “I’m Back” on reconnect. After you’ve been disconnected and get back, any tournament that you are sitting out in will automatically recognize you as being back. There’s also a new “Two-Click Exit” with which you can quit the game while still seated. Also, instead of having to click a dialog for each table you are sitting in, you can click once in a new dialog. You can use this method to bulk un-register from sit and gos as well.

There are new Eight-Game and Nine-Games tables available at Full Tilt Poker. The Nine-Game is just like the Ten-Game that already existed, only there is no Badugi. The Eight-Game is just like the existing Seven-Game, only Triple Draw is added.

There is a new “Quick Fold to Any Bet” button inside Rush Poker games that replaces the “Fold to Any Bet” button. Finally, there is a Sit & Go Finder change, as the checkbox that says, “Register for Another Sit & Go of this Type” has had its behavior changed. Instead of always remembering your last setting, it will always reset to unchecked for each new type of sit and go.

Players should also note that two major changes were made to the Iron Man program. The 500-point daily requirements are now implemented, making gaining Iron Man status easier if you earn 500 points in a day. In addition, the Iron Man Plus program was revived. There’s another major Black Card change coming, but it’s been planned for January, likely sometime in the middle of the month.

For the past couple weeks, the poker industry has revisited what happened in 2010 and highlighted and discussed what it believed were the biggest stories of the year. However, with one day left in 2010, we need to add one more item to that list, the departure of Phil Hellmuth and Annie Duke from UB. The duo of poker superstars had represented the company since before the poker boom and built two of the biggest brands in the game. Now, Hellmuth and Duke are perhaps two of the biggest free agents on the market.

The announcement was first posted on the UB blog and then confirmed by both players on Twitter. Duke broke her news first with a post on her website. Shortly after, news of Hellmuth's exit was announced by UB, and a few hours later, Hellmuth finally released his own statement.

"I've sincerely enjoyed wearing the UB patch, but it's time for me to move on," Duke said in her blog. "So why am I leaving UB? In a nutshell, professional and personal growth. I'm going to explore and pursue other business opportunities on a full-time basis."

Hellmuth spoke a similar message.

"Making a BIG move … leaving UB," Hellmuth said on Twitter. "Truly lots of great memories, but it's time to move on … Mutual decision … Looking forward to BRIGHT future!"

Hellmuth also commented to ESPN.com regarding the situation. "I still have faith in UB and their management, my leaving UB is simply a business decision."

For Hellmuth and Duke, it might be all business, but in terms of endorsements, wherever they'll go will make a big difference. That said, given Hellmuth's stature and brand, his most likely fit is either his own site, or him joining forces with the online poker site WSOP.com and becoming the official spokesperson of the brand where his name is found on top of the bracelet leaderboard. Hellmuth has too big of a personality to join a company like Full Tilt or PokerStars and just become part of the team. With his ability to market himself, I'd be shocked to see Hellmuth as a No. 2 to another player on a different site.

Duke is coming off a year that included her victory in the National Heads-Up Poker Championships. She has had unbelievable exposure to the American public through "Celebrity Apprentice" and to poker players around the world with countless hours of air time at the felt. She is most definitely in an enviable position. Duke's future isn't clear either, but with her brother, Howard Lederer, one of the members of Team Full Tilt, it wouldn't be surprising for her to end up as a Red Pro.

The other option is that the two take their talents somewhere together, and while I believe Hellmuth would be a perfect fit for WSOP.com on his own, Duke and Hellmuth could easily both represent WSOP.com with ease.

So where does this leave Team UB? Younger is the key word. Led by Adam Levy, Bryan Devonshire, Eric Baldwin, Brandon Cantu and Joe Sebok, the remaining team has a lot going for it in terms of representing the new generation of poker. That said, the team also includes Mark Kroon and Gary Debernardi, two players whom I can't imagine remaining part of UB as the company continues to go in this new direction. Maria Ho signed her way onto the team a couple weeks ago, joining her "Amazing Race" teammate Tiffany Michelle. She was the latest addition to this changing roster, but the company also announced on its blog that there will be new additions announced in early 2011.

Without Duke and Hellmuth, UB needs a new face to step up and promote the site and given the events of the day, all signs point to Joe Sebok becoming that new front man as he was the only player to release a statement on the changes.

"These two legends in our industry have, quite literally, helped to build UB into what it is today," Sebok said in his blog. "Phil and Annie have been the face of the company for years now, and we thank them for their unbelievable contributions and bid them the utmost in success moving forward."

Can UB rebound after losing two of its biggest stars while still recovering from the worst online poker scandal in history? That's a story to follow in 2011 …

Party Poker is waiting for the New Year to arrive and has already gone ahead and prepared a wonderful array of promotions and exciting offers for its players. To be a part of this Million Dollar Hand poker event, player will first have to be registered members with the Party Poker site and have real money playing accounts. The site is currently offering a total of $1,000,000 for the lucky winners. Party Poker players who have only recently joined the site are encouraged to start building up their bankroll and raking in Party Poker points so as to be on par with players who have spent more time at the site, poker players whoa re only now considering signing up with Party Poker will have to get moving as there are only a few days left before the promotion Million Dollar Hand begins. All new players at Party Poker will be awarded with a welcome bonus up to a sum of £100 on their initial deposit.

Poker players will be allowed to participate in the Million Dollar Hand throughout the month of January, but must meet the requirements. To play the Million Dollar Hand promotion, players will have to accrue Party Poker points by playing the games on the site. Players will then be given special Million Dollar Hand promotional cards for every 15 points that they collect. Once they have collected a minimum of five Million Dollar Hand promotional cards, these 5 cards will be considered to be a poker hand and checked accordingly and ranked. Players with good hand rakings such as a pair or better will be awarded with cash prizes depending on the kind of hand that they have managed to score.

For instance, players who manage to make a Royal Flush on their five promotional cards will get $1 million, while players who get a Straight Flush can take home $10,000. Similarly, players with a Four of a Kind hand will be given $1,000, while players with a Full House on their cards can get $150 and those players with a Flush will get $100. Has anyone tried the On Demand tournaments? I have been tempted as these tournaments seem to get much bigger (and thus a bigger prize pool) than before. Any change in the style or how to attack them? Curious...
