As professional poker players today we need to start thinking of poker as a business. We need to treat it like we all own a small piece of this business. The growth of poker will only enhance our opportunities to individually profit from the game in the future. Absent that growth, fewer and fewer of us will be able to call poker our profession. As a collective we need to understand the importance of giving back to the game.

The State Gaming Commission has officially signed off on two licenses for online poker within state lines.

Thursday, the gaming commission signed off on the licenses recommended earlier this month for IGT and Bally Technologies.

These two companies are the first to be considered for a licenses since authorities approved regulations for interactive gambling.

Specifically -- those regulations require technology that can identify underage players and verify the gambler's location.

But even with this approval, Bally and IGT still have to wait for individual casinos to be licensed for this sort of gaming.

Several states have discussed legislation that would allow for online poker companies to get licensed within state borders, so that poker enthusiasts could play with other poker players online within the state's borders.

However, it would make sense that Nevada would be the first state to pass a bill authorizing the licensing of online poker providers, in order to allow creation of a new online poker market in Nevada and, hopefully, throughout the United States.

Online Poker in America has always been popular despite its illegality and at last some states are trying to make progress on legislation to legalise the game, however, their efforts are being continuously hampered by opposition from Indian tribal gambling interests. California is an excellent example of the current problem. State Senator Roderick Wright put forward a bill proposing the legalization of online poker which was pulled in mid-June because of opposition from a number of tribal organizations. Due to the opposition State Senator Roderick Wright said that there is less than a 50-50 chance that it will be passed this session.

From my non-smoking hotel room, which has ceiling-to-floor windows, the curious thing is that I can still smell smoke, and no outside air ever penetrates these walls. Which, oddly enough, serves as a metaphor for the state of poker these days.

I love poker. I love the vagaries of the game, the character of the people, the diversity of the characters. Most of all, I love the World Series of Poker, which I have been fortunate enough — along with an equally Lotto-lucky Lon McEachern — to announce on ESPN for 10 years.

The years-long tug of war between gambling fans and foes has been heating up since the U.S. banned online gambling in 2011, but with state debts mounting and legalization on the horizon, the so-called volunteer tax has been looking pretty appetizing.

While gambling taxes are hardly the cure for state’s daunting debt woes, they may provide new sources of revenue needed by the indebted to pay down obligations, help fund state-sponsored projects and spark job creation.

"The main political motivation for legalization of gambling is tax revenues and employment," said Doug Walker, an economics professor at the College of Charleston. "It is unlikely that online gambling will lead to significant increases in jobs, but generally, more economic activity is better than less."

Jason Koon broke out on the online poker tournament scene in 2008 and in just over three years won over $2.5 million. Online success, however, didn’t immediately translate into big, live tournament scores, and Koon struggled to make the transition.

The West Virginia native nabbed a fourth-place finish in the 2010 WPT Festa Al Lago main event, but failed to find any sort of consistency until this year.

In the 43-year history of the World Series of Poker, hundreds of thousands of poker players from around the world have competed for a chance to make history. Most of these players fail to even make the money, but every once in a while, a champion emerges that can truly change the way the world sees the game. Naoya Kihara won the $5,000 six-handed pot-limit Omaha Event 34 to not only capture his first WSOP bracelet, but also to earn the honor of being the first Japanese champion in WSOP history. The 30-year-old Kihara earned $512,029 by outlasting the field of 419 and defeating Chris De Maci heads-up for the bracelet.

Despite California’s online poker bill being pulled from the agenda before being voted on by a Senate committee roughly two weeks ago, the measure is currently being amended by its sponsors in preparation of a possible hearing on the issue prior to a legislative summer recess set for July 6.

The bill’s sponsors, Senators Roderick Wright and Darrell Steinberg, are meeting with the state’s gambling interest groups this week to hear their concerns and work on amending SB1463 in an effort to appease all the parties involved. A difficult task to accomplish considering that tribal casinos, cardrooms and horse racing interests all want a piece of the revenue that online poker legislation would bring to the Golden State.

"The problem is that not all stakeholders want the same thing, each group is self-interested," said Harsh Parikh, a gaming attorney with Snell & Wilmer, LLP, in Costa Mesa, who is monitoring the bill for some national and international gaming companies and financial stakeholders. "Some tribes believe they have exclusive right to online gaming. Most scholars and lawyers on the topic disagree."

A bill in Delaware that would legalize online table games, including poker, and expand other forms of gambling in the state will have to wait for another day before going to the governor’s desk. The Senate delayed Tuesday’s scheduled voted, the Associated Press reported.

Supporters thought that they wouldn’t have enough votes due to the absence of a single Democratic lawmaker, the Associated Press reported. The proposal was voted on favorably by the House nearly two weeks ago.

The Delaware Gaming Competitiveness Act of 2012 would authorize Internet gaming under the control and operation of the Delaware Lottery. The state is looking to partner with West Virgina and Rhode Island in offering online poker.

Lightning-fast poker has arrived at Titanpoker-com with the launch of Speed Hold’em Poker, a new cash game format that changes the concept - and speed - of online poker.

In Speed Hold’em Poker, which is available initially at select No Limit Hold’em cash games, players join a large pool of players and face different opponents with every hand. Players can fold their hands at any time by clicking a Speed Fold button, even if it’s not their turn to act. They are immediately moved to a different table where they are dealt a new hand.

Moving from hand to hand is streamlined for the players, as there is no opening and closing of table screens. When a speed poker hand finishes, or when a player folds, a player’s opponents simply disappear and new ones instantly take their place.

Speed Hold’em Poker tables are easily found in the Titan Poker software and they can be saved in a player’s Favourites, or accessed with the Quick Seat feature. Players can play up to four times more hands per hour and can also multi-table with multiple entries into the playing pool.

Speed Hold’em Poker speeds up the poker action, significantly reducing the waiting time between hands.

Microgaming Poker Network has terminated its contract with online poker site 5050Poker.

The site, which was suspended from the Microgaming network just over 10 days ago, has accused the network of acting in an unethical manner.

However Microgaming has responded by shutting the door on the Swedish-based site saying, “…the Microgaming Poker Network regrets to announce that it has terminated its contract with 5050Poker Ltd, with immediate effect.
The decision was taken after giving 5050Poker Ltd over a week to redress a material breach of their contract, being the non-payment of monies owed to cure their overdrawn network clearing account.

Sunday night proved a mixed blessing for online poker player “NikoBellic11″ after losing with quads to an opponent while playing at Americas Cardroom. Fortunately, though, the positives far exceeded the negatives as he was playing at a Bad Beat Jackpot table at the time and consequently ended up scooping the lion’s share of the $130,000 bonus prize.

As Americas Cardroom spokesperson Michael Harris was quick to explain: “With the WSOP currently in progress, we know players are experiencing all sorts of brutal bad beats in Vegas without getting anything to ease the pain. But we’re way different. When online poker players get dealt a crushing blow at a Bad Beat Jackpot table, they’ll pop the jackpot that climbs by thousands of dollars every day.”
