Even in a time of deep economic crisis, the promise of a jackpot lurks on every Italian street corner. In one central neighborhood near the ancient walls of Rome, one can gamble at a slot-machine and bingo parlour in a former cinema, at a bar with chirping video-betting games, at a hall for horse races, at a tobacco shop that sells a dozen varieties of lottery tickets and even at a local post office that sells scratch-and-win cards - all in a two-block radius.

Italy is now Europe's biggest gambling market and one of the biggest in the world, undermining consumer spending in the euro zone's third-largest economy at a time of severe recession and pushing a mounting number of gambling addicts onto the streets.

Sweden's refusal to open up its gambling market means it is missing out on billions in tax revenue and is hindering the growth of its online gambling industry, Casinoonline.se report concludes.

Sweden may be missing out on billions of Krona in tax and licensing revenue, as well as jeopardizing the continued growth of one of its key high tech industries, by not opening up its online gambling market to competition. This is the conclusion reached in an in-depth report conducted by Casinoonline.se, a leading online casino portal.

Despite having a web-savvy population who love to gamble online, at present, only one online operator holds a license to offer such services in Sweden, the state-backed Svenska Spel. This not only limits the choices available to Swedish consumers, it is also holding back Sweden's gambling industry.

$1.68bn SEK a year in tax

Taking aim at what they call an abuse of the taxpayers' money, a growing number of states are blocking welfare recipients from spending their benefits on booze, cigarettes, lottery tickets, casino gambling, tattoos and strippers.

"If you're not abusing the program, then you should really have no problem with these reforms," said state Rep. Shaunna O'Connell, a Republican pushing for restrictions in Massachusetts.

After voting against video gaming just two weeks ago, two North Aurora trustees changed their mind Monday and voted to allow the gambling machines.

The Village Board reversed the 4-2 vote it took June 18 to opt out of the Illinois Gaming Commission’s video gambling program, which shares proceeds with municipalities that allow liquor license holders to install video poker and other online gambling terminals. At the first vote, trustee Laura Curtis said video gaming would increase crime and gambling addiction, while trustee Vince Mancini argued against unofficially taxing poor people, whom he said are more likely to gamble. Trustees Chris Faber and Mark Gaffino also voted against video gaming, leaving trustees Mark Guethle and Ryan Lambert as its only supporters. Village President Dale Berman argued in favor of video gaming, but could not vote.

Zynga CEO Mark Pincus understands that investors want his company to improve its mobile revenue generation, but he thinks the pieces are in place for success.

Pincus, appearing at Fortune Brainstorm Tech in Aspen, says that Zynga (ZNGA) games initially thrived on social networks like Facebook (F😎, because "that's where people were hanging out." Now that so many consumers are spending more time on smart-phones -- particularly in North America -- Zynga needs to follow the crowd.

(Much of what we do online releases dopamine into the brain's pleasure centers, resulting in obsessive pleasure-seeking behavior. Technology companies face the option to exploit our addictions for profit.)

The leaders of Internet companies face an interesting, if also morally questionable, imperative: either they hijack neuroscience to gain market share and make large profits, or they let competitors do that and run away with the market.

In the Industrial Age, Thomas Edison famously said, "I find out what the world needs. Then I go ahead and try to invent." In the Internet Age, more and more companies live by the mantra "create an obsession, then exploit it." Gaming companies talk openly about creating a "compulsion loop," which works roughly as follows: the player plays the game; the player achieves the goal; the player is awarded new content; which causes the player to want to continue playing with the new content and re-enter the loop.

One of the leading providers of information related to the internet gambling business has issued a new Business Intelligence report that focused on the effect of the operations of Social Media on the industry of internet gambling.

In order for companies in the online gambling market to become competitive, they have to know how to interact and deal with their users on the internet.

This is why a lot of online gambling firms are starting to approach the Social Media arena using different methods. Some gambling firms are addressing this by pursuing various social strategies and some are approaching it reluctantly.

All of the American Idol judge rumors were surrounding Jennifer Lopez and her potential exit before next season but a different judge has stolen the headlines – at least for one day. Steven Tyler has announced that he is out as an American Idol judge as to keep his focus first and foremost on rock ‘n roll.

Join Bovada Sportsbook right now and bet American Idol!

Tyler spent two seasons as a judge and he was instrumental in the transition from the iconic team of Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell. He and Jennifer Lopez did a fantastic job in keep the show credible with excellent judging and now Idol has to think about – once again – replacing two judges.

But that might not be all for Idol as the entire show might be coming apart at the seams. Tyler is gone, Lopez might be leaving and there are whispers that host Ryan Seacrest might shift his focus to other projects as he’s already producing Keeping Up With The Kardashians and has signed a contract with NBC, although he is expected to be back for season 12. The ratings for American Idol were still good last season but they did see a 23% decline, which is just another hurdle they’ll have to contend with.

American Idol Season 12 - Gender of Winner
Male -115
Female -115

In the meantime, rumors are already swirling as to who might replace Tyler. Charlie Sheen’s name has already been thrown into the mix – as wild as that sounds – as well as singer Adam Lambert, who is a previous contestant on American Idol.

After the Tyler the producers will need an aging rocker, who is still mildly relevant.:helpme

Actor Tom Cruise made his action movie career a reality Wednesday when he allegedly led paparazzi on a high-speed chase through Manhattan.

The recently divorced actor, along with his 6-year-old daughter, Suri, led paparazzi on a 20-minute chase through Manhattan’s West Side, according to the New York Daily News.

The “Rock of Ages” actor and his daughter left the Greenwich Hotel in Manhattan’s Lower West Side in a black Chevy Suburban Wednesday afternoon and headed toward a heliport at 12th Avenue and West 29th Street, blowing through red lights along the way.

At least 10 cars and six motorcyclists and bicyclists followed Cruise as his SUV reached 20 mph beyond the speed limit, according to the Daily News. One van was even pulled over by police.

It has been a mixed week for the progress towards legalized online poker in the US. On the plus side it has been reported that senators Harry Reid and John Kyl have agreed on terms for an internet poker bill. While there has been no comment from Reid, John Pappas, the Executive Direct of the Poker Players Alliance has said that negotiations between the two senators are “likely complete.”

Furthermore, Rep. Joe Barton, sponsor of an internet poker bill, said that he is “confident this issue will be voted on by the House and Senate in this session.”

The U.S. Senate Committee on Indian Affairs has announced that an oversight hearing on Internet gambling will be held Thursday, July 26.

The topic to be discussed will be the Regulation of Tribal Gaming: From Brick & Mortar to the Internet. This will be the third time this committee will have held a pow-wow on the effect of online poker and gambling on the country’s many Indian tribes.

The first hearing was held in November of last year and was entitled Future of Internet Gaming: What’s at Stake for Tribes? It was apparent from this meeting that Indian tribes don’t agree on whether the legalization of online poker and gambling will benefit their interests. This theme was reinforced by Tulalip Tribe Vice Chairman Glen Gobin who testified that his tribe "sees legalization of internet gambling as a direct threat to the development of Indian country."

The latest survey conducted in the USA regarding the opinions of the American population on legalized online gambling has revealed that 81 percent disagree with the current prohibition on the activity. The Wall Street Journal’s Marketwire published the results of an internet survey conducted by CasinoFYI-com of a random selection of 1000 internet users.

The survey concluded that the majority of American’s responding to the survey favoured some form of legal online gambling on a Federal or State level. The owner of CasinoFYI-com, Wes Burns, commented on the results, "It's no surprise really. The ban on online gambling is ineffective and hypocritical. The ban has done nothing to stop online gambling and has only served to push the market underground."

A gunman wearing a gas mask opened fire early Friday at a suburban Denver theater at the opening of the Batman movie "The Dark Knight Rises," killing 14 people and injuring at least 50 others, authorities said.

The gunman, who is in custody, stood at the front of the theater and fired into the crowd about 12:30 a.m. MDT at a multiplex theater in a mall in Aurora.

"Witnesses tell us he released some sort of canister. They heard a hissing sound and some gas emerged and the gunman opened fire," Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said at a news conference.

FBI spokesman Jason Pack said there's no indication in the investigation so far of any connection to terrorism.

In Asia, online gambling is fast attracting more and more fans. The majority of industry experts believe that two trends will continue to grow in Asia in the next years: an increased number of people interested in online gambling and for Japan to become the second-largest market in Asia.

Even though the online gambling industry in the Asia-Pacific area is currently expected to grow from $34.4 billion to $79.3 billion in the next few years (according to a recent Global Gaming Outlook report lead by PriceWaterhouseCooper), countries like Indonesia have been fighting against it.

The third season of The Voice is just around the corner in September and it looks like a couple of new celebrities will be joining the cast. Mary J. Blige and Michael Buble will work as advisors on the show, joining judges Adam Levine, Cee Lo Green, Christina Aguilera and Blake Shelton.

Join Bovada Sportsbook right now and bet on The Voice!

Blige will be mentoring members of Adam Levine’s team on the new season while Buble will work with Shelton’s team. NBC has yet to announce who will be mentoring Green and Aguilera’s teams.

It’s more good news for Blige, who recently announced that she’ll be heading out on a tour with R&B singer D’Angelo. They’ll co-headline a tour that starts on August 18th.

The Voice Season 3 - Gender of Winner
Male -115
Female -115

Between Blige and Buble, that will add a total of 12 Grammy Awards to the show, which is plenty of credibility. More importantly, both are excellent singers and will do a good job of mentoring the contestants on the show in hopes of developing a better voice.

Previous mentors on the show included Kelly Clarkson, Miranda Lambert, Alanis Morissette and Robin Thicke. Clarkson is now on her own show (Duets) while the others have been busy with other things.

Singing reality/contestant shows are all the rage right now as a slew of new shows have grown into serious contenders for American Idol. Idol, which is the pioneer of this type of brand, is losing some of their ratings (and their judges) whereas shows like X Factor and The Voice are growing in popularity.

The third season of The Voice will begin on September 10th on NBC.

According to Candi Fox, Indianapolis Entertainment Examiner, a tragedy in Aurora, Colorado occurred on Friday, July 20, 2012. Later that morning, President Obama was scheduled to speak at the Harborside Event Center in downtown Fort Myers. He did. In addition, some entertainers had something to say as well.

As for the president, Harborside had a full live audience intent on what the Commander in Chief had to say, and those who could not attend listened to TV or radio. One of Fort Myers' own commented on the tragedy as well as a Colorado resident (see comments below) plus two baseball players.
