Problem gambling is on the increase in the UK. Statistics just published by the Gambling Commission show a rise in activity in lotteries, the number of gambling machines and in online gaming, particularly betting, casinos and bingo.

Nearly three-quarters of Britons (73 per cent) indulge in some kind of gambling, although for most that means a flutter on the National Lottery.

The National Lottery sold more tickets than ever in 2011-12, up 12 per cent in the year. Other gambling activities are also growing fast. These include football betting, scratchcards and online poker and bingo, according to the latest British gambling prevalence survey (BGPS).

"Gambling is growing, helped by our somewhat liberal regulatory framework," said John McLeod, of the card game information site Pagat-com.

Officials from six of the 10 communities attended a dinner meeting at Rivers Casino in Des Plaines Tuesday night where Mayor Marty Moylan and city lobbyists asked for their support to urge Quinn to veto the bill.

All of the American Idol judge rumors were surrounding Jennifer Lopez and her potential exit before next season but a different judge has stolen the headlines – at least for one day. Steven Tyler has announced that he is out as an American Idol judge as to keep his focus first and foremost on rock ‘n roll.

Join Bovada Sportsbook right now and bet American Idol!

Tyler spent two seasons as a judge and he was instrumental in the transition from the iconic team of Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell. He and Jennifer Lopez did a fantastic job in keep the show credible with excellent judging and now Idol has to think about – once again – replacing two judges.

But that might not be all for Idol as the entire show might be coming apart at the seams. Tyler is gone, Lopez might be leaving and there are whispers that host Ryan Seacrest might shift his focus to other projects as he’s already producing Keeping Up With The Kardashians and has signed a contract with NBC, although he is expected to be back for season 12. The ratings for American Idol were still good last season but they did see a 23% decline, which is just another hurdle they’ll have to contend with.

American Idol Season 12 - Gender of Winner
Male -115
Female -115

In the meantime, rumors are already swirling as to who might replace Tyler. Charlie Sheen’s name has already been thrown into the mix – as wild as that sounds – as well as singer Adam Lambert, who is a previous contestant on American Idol.

There has been much discussion on the upcoming referendum on the legalization of the numbers industry in The Bahamas. The industry has let it be known that it will spend $1.5 million on advertising for its cause.

The church has responded with vocal opposition to any further legalization of a practice it views as harmful to Bahamians.

A vote, however, by the people to legalize the numbers industry will actually not legalize lottery gambling for Bahamians and legal residents. The Parliament would have to pass legislation amending our gaming laws.

In the Westminster parliamentary system votes on matters of conscience are usually free votes – that is, the party whips are removed and members vote their consciences without fear of party discipline for making a particular choice.

When the whip is on a member who votes against the party's position he could be expelled from that political party.

Assuming that there would be a free vote in Parliament on the issue of legalizing lottery gambling, it is unclear how the members would vote.

Eight out of 10 of Facebook's most popular apps are related to gambling, prompting concern they could "normalise" punting and lead to addiction.

The trend towards apps focused on slot machines, poker and bingo emerged at last week's launching of Facebook's new App Centre.

The "top rated" and highest grossing app is Slotomania, which promises to bring Vegas to millions of Facebook, iPhone, iPad and Android players. Other games in the top 10 include Texas HoldEm Poker and Doubledown Casino.

Online social games could get a shot of real money with a new platform launched by a startup on Monday. The new platform to allow real-money bets on almost any online game is coming from Betable, a London-headquartered company with a British gambling license, and working in California

with US game developers.

“This is the first and only platform to allow any game developer to allow real-money gambling,” said Christopher Griffin, chief executive of Betable.

Griffin told AFP the new system will allow players outside the United States and other jurisdictions where online gambling is legal to place real-money wagers.

He said this combines the experience of social games with the thrills of real betting. It can be offered on computers and a variety of mobile devices.

THE NEW gambling law is discriminatory, disproportionate and in violation of EU laws, according to one company that has had to close down 16 shops providing online casino and slot machine services.

A lawyer for the Cyprus-registered AA Crown Bet Ltd which represents the interests of a number of big gaming companies in Ireland and Malta said the company is considering suing the Cyprus Republic, reporting it to the European Commission and appealing to the European Court of Justice (ECJ) over the new law recently implemented.

The online gambling industry is growing rapidly in the Asia-Pacific region.

With the European Union fighting a recession and decreased growth in Brazil and China, it appears that one of the few bright areas in the modern day economy is the sportsbook industry.

Despite the gloom in the global economies, online gambling – especially in the Asia-Pacific region – is going quite strong.

Well-respected online gaming site IBIS produced a report earlier this week that included estimates for growth of online gambling in Australia and Asia of 3.3% in 2012 alone. The two key segments of the growing business are sports betting and poker.

Churchill Downs Inc. has filed for an online gambling license in Nevada, signaling the Louisville-based gambling and racing company is acting on its interest in operating online poker, which could be legalized in other states.

Spokeswoman Courtney Yopp Norris confirmed Churchill has filed an application with the Nevada Gaming Control Board. She could not immediately provide any timeline for the approval process or whether the company would proceed with an online gambling venture if it could operate in Nevada alone.

From the earliest days of man, people have liked to gamble. Some people like to bet on sports like the horses or football, while others prefer to play casino games like roulette, poker or craps. Normally this would involve a visit to the nearest casino or bookmaker and you could only play when they were open.

With the rising popularity of the Internet, online casinos such as Gaming Club have become increasingly attractive to gamblers. Customers can play their favourite games at any time of the day or night. It does not even have to be for money, with all of the top sites offering a wide range of free-play and paid-play games. This gives anyone a chance to be a winner whenever they feel like it.

Lucky Gamblers

Gamblers are no longer limited in their pastime, so can play any game they want at all times of the day or night. Not only that, but customers have a great choice of online casinos or games to play. You can even wager on your mobile phone while you are waiting for the bus or taking your lunch break.

More than 2,500 sites exist, of which one-fifth are dedicated to poker and there are nearly two million online poker players in the country – but no US state has yet licensed internet poker.

The federal government at present has three proposals tabled for the legalisation of internet gambling but they are tied up with procedural stumbling blocks and are unlikely to see the light of day before the next election.
