CASINO firm 888 Holdings yesterday became the latest online gaming firm to pay back-taxes to the Spanish government, part of a cash raid by the country’s government.

Spain is in the process of issuing new e-gaming licences for all online bookmakers and is using the leverage to extract retrospective payments from internet gambling companies that operated between January 2009 and May 2011.

After completing a self-assessment tax return 888 has made a one-off payment of €7.4m (£5.9m) in back-taxes, plus surcharges and interest of up to €1.3m.

All of the taxes and charges were funded from the firm’s cash reserves.

“Following this payment, 888 believes that it has fulfilled all requirements necessary to receive a Spanish e-gaming licence, with awards set to begin at the start of June,” the firm said in a statement.

Last week rival Bwin.party said it has paid £26.56m to the Spanish government in back-taxes, while Sportingbet also announced that it is in discussions with the Spanish Ministry of Finance on the matter.

The tax claims are based on interpretations of laws dating from 1966 and 1977 that had never previously been applied to online gambling operations.

Shares in 888 Holdings closed down 0.7 per cent at 68.25p.

A Hindu statesman has demanded the withdrawing of a new online slot game which features two of the religion’s deities.

Developed by online providers Playtech, Lakshmi Gold is said to have outraged Hindus for its usage of the Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesh.

The five reel slot uses Lakshmi as the bonus symbol, with Ganesh employed as a wild symbol, while other regular symbols include a cow, an animal sacred to Hindus.

Hindu statesman Rajan Zed has spoken out against the game, stating that inappropriate usage of Hindu deities for commercial purposes was hurtful to the religion’s followers.

“Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesh were meant to be worshiped in temples or home shrines and not for promoting gambling on an online slot for mercantile greed of an online gaming company,” he said.

Zed called for Playech to apologise and recall the game.

In Hinduism, Lakshmi is the goddess of good fortune and beauty, while Ganesh is worshipped as a god of wisdom and remover of obstacles.

The buildup for the second season of The X Factor has already been dominated by Simon Cowell’s hunt for replacement judges after letting go of Paula Abdul and Nicole Schwerzinger, along with host Steve Jones. Cowell, the creator of The X Factor and also a judge alongside music executive L.A. Reid, hasn’t found a replacement for Jones yet, but he has found his judges in pop icon Britney Spears and Disney star Demi Lovato. However, it seems as though this relationship hasn’t gotten off on a high note.

Of course, we have the internet now and everything said and done will be posted, which is why it is not surprising to hear that a tape of auditions for The X Factor was leaked online. It featured Spears asserting herself as the dominant one over her younger star (Spears turned 30 in December, Lovato will be 20 in August) during an audition for the show. A young male performed for the panel and Lovato didn’t feel that he had what it took to set himself apart from the rest of the competition while Spears felt that he could be the next Justin Bieber, and voiced her opinion strongly – to say the least. It wouldn’t be a stretch to think that Lovato grew up watching Spears, so she didn’t do much to defend herself.

X Factor USA - Season 2 - Who will win?
Male +120
Female EVEN
Group +400

However, this is probably the dynamic that Cowell was going for when he signed these two on. Spears was always going to be the star out of the two and it is reflected in their salaries: Spears will make $15 million this season while Lovato will bring home $1 million.

It will be interesting to see how this pair can get along; you may even find props on whether either will even make it to The X Factor season premiere, which is scheduled for September on Fox.

AUSTRALIANS could get access to legal online poker tournaments and a wider choice of online sports betting options under proposals to liberalise the internet gambling sector.

Under the proposals, contained in an interim report to the federal government, live in-play sports betting on the net — allowing people to punt on an event while it is in progress — could become legal.

But micro-betting — such as ball-by-ball bets in cricket — would be banned online.

Releasing the proposals yesterday, Communications Minister Stephen Conroy stressed it was interim report only and the government had made no decisions.

But Senator Conroy and sports betting agencies pointed out that Australians were already sending about $1 billion a year offshore via illegal sites, and argued that regulating the domestic industry could help protect punters.

Two years ago the government said it did not support the liberalisation of online gaming, including online poker, as recommended by the Productivity Commission.

UPDATE: ONLINE gambling sites may soon be allowed to bet on live sporting matches and offer cash poker games. Australian gaming sites could run trials of both forms of betting within a year as the Federal Government tries to combat unregulated overseas gaming sites.

Documents reveal the Federal Government recently briefed the Australian gaming industry on measures enabling online in-play betting.

Sources believe there may be a five-year trial of online poker.

Live betting, currently offered only by telephone and in person, could be a boom online industry - worth $300 million a year - given its accessibility on smartphones and tablets.

The race to the White House has begun as President Barack Obama is aiming for re-election while trying to hold off Mitt Romney of the Republican Party, but the election trail isn’t limited to the men that are fighting for the Oval Office. Expect to hear a lot from the wives and families in questions as well and the current First Lady recently made a popular appearance that was partly business and partly pleasure

Michelle Obama and her daughters, Sasha and Malia, were three of over 5,000 party-goers that attended a concert by Beyonce over the weekend in Atlantic City. Without a doubt, they all seemed to have a grand old time.

Mrs. Obama is reportedly a huge Beyonce fan (but who isn’t, really?) and was spotted with her daughters singing along to the star’s biggest hits. Beyonce herself is returning to entertainment after giving birth to daughter Blue Ivy; we wonder if daddy, rap icon and businessman Jay-Z, was home playing nanny? Regardless, Beyonce showed that she could still put on a show after losing 60 pounds to get back to performance weight and the First Lady and her daughters were among the most appreciative of the fans in attendance.

2012 US Presidential Election - Winning Party
Democrats -180
Republicans +150

While this was a fun event for everyone involved, every appearance by President Obama and his family has something to do with the election. A large part of his success in 2008 was his ability to get the younger vote and seeing the First Lady at a Beyonce show likely swayed a few voters in that demographic as it makes them seem more personable, especially to the urban population. This likely won’t be the last time you hear about President Obama or Mrs. Obama showing up at a concert while on the election trail.

Spain is set to shake up internet gambling this week, helping it capture much-needed tax income as newly licensed firms slug it out to win over the country's growing crowd of online poker and sports betting fans.

The heavily indebted government will award licenses to internet betting operators for the first time on Friday. Revenues in the sector are estimated to be over 800 million euros ($1 billion) in 2014, according to gaming association Jdigital.

The seventh season of America’s Got Talent is underway and the most entertaining part of reality/performance shows are usually the auditions as people are looking to get their name out there…whether it is in a positive or negative way.

Join Bovada Sportsbook and bet on America’s Got Talent today!

St. Louis was the stop this week and it didn’t get off to a hot start as a few acts wound up on the negative pile early but the action picked up with an escape artist, as well as a child performer and a woman that walked on glass. It continued with a puppetmaster that was talented and creepy, which is a dangerous combination in these sorts of competitions. Finally, we had a person that was an impersonator of rock icon Ozzy Osbourne but he was a “little” person and not a child, so you can imagine how that went over. It is ironic that Sharon Osbourne, Ozzy’s wife, is a part of the judging panel along with Howard Stern and Howie Mandel, but they seemed to be entertained by him.

Currently, the odds are a dead heat between a male and female solo act to win the competition at +160, while a group act’s odds is listed at +200. A group has never won the show, so it’ll take a mindblower to break that trend. If you are planning on wagering on America’s Got Talent, you should side heavily with the solo acts as group acts are tougher to package, unless they are out of this world. Male solo acts have won six of the seven seasons after 11-year-old Bianca Ryan won the first season, so they would seem to have the edge, but you never know what is going to happen on America’s Got Talent, so stay tuned.

AUSTRALIAN gambling companies like Tabcorp are betting on the government allowing poker online.

If laws change, Tabcorp will leap at the chance to trial online poker and cash in on the booming but controversial area of betting at cards on the internet.

“Piloting tournament poker would be an area that should be profitable for us,” said Tabcorp’s chief executive David Attenborough in an interview this week.

Mr Attenborough said the company had surveyed clients a couple of years ago and found that up to 50 per cent of customers had tried online poker but it was unknown how many continued to play the game. Australian-based gambling companies are currently not allowed to offer online poker, but Australians are able to play on offshore websites.

Online gambling company Bwin.party (LON:BPTY) is going all in on social gaming after announcing plans yesterday to invest up to US$50 million in the craze.

The company revealed it had secured a number of contracts from two eastern European gaming developers, Velasco and Orneon to the tune of US$23 million.

This will give Bwin access to existing business-to-business contracts and significant software engineering resources.

The funds will also go towards setting up a new games studio called ‘Win’, which will be run by a specialist team headed by Barak Rabinowitz, the former CEO of online gaming firm Mytopia.

The online bookmaker will also launch a number of new social gaming apps in a bid to gain a foothold in the sector, which it called “an exciting and fast growing area of digital entertainment”.

A man who blamed his girlfriend's five-year-old son for making loss-making trades in expensive natural resources through his online betting account is not bound by a term he agreed to on the bookmaker's website, the High Court has ruled. The term stated that an accountholder is deemed to have authorised all trading made under his or her account number.

Colin Cochrane claimed to have left his computer at his girlfriend's house and that her son had used his Spreadex account to make trades in oil, gold and silver without his permission. Spreadex argued that Cochrane should have to pay the £50,000 losses that had been run up on his account, according to a report by the Metro newspaper.

In the entertainment industry, couples break up and make up faster than the tabloids can keep up with them - even in the relationships that look stable. Exhibit A: Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore. It all fell apart in the latter half of 2011 for Kutcher and Moore, with Moore looking to divorce the “Two And A Half Men” star in November. The only thing is she never actually filed papers and now it looks like they could be on the mend.

Join Bovada Sportsbook right now and bet Entertainment Props!

Kutcher has been rumored to have taken up with a number of lovely ladies, notably pop star Rihanna, but now it appears as a reunion could be on the horizon after the two saw each other at a birthday party of a mutual friend. There was a long embrace between the couple and apparently they have met since then. It actually has been revealed that they had seen each other prior to that party but no one has confirmed this. Kutcher also made an emotional speech at the party for Rabbi Yehuda Berg, who married Kutcher and Moore in 2005, and that has set a slew of events in motion for a possible reunion. This also includes a few vague tweets from Moore about forgiveness and since Twitter seems to be the new platform in which celebrities can get their feelings out, you have to take it somewhat seriously.

Will Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore announce they are back together in 2012?
Yes +150
No -200

A Moore/Kutcher reunion has odds of +150 that the two will get back together but a strong -200 for the opposite. It seems as though the ball is in Moore’s court since Kutcher was the one in the wrong. Moore has to find it to forgive the younger Kutcher, but the two have been through a lot in the last six or seven years since getting married, so a reunion really isn’t out of the question.

Spain has awarded online gaming licenses to companies including Bwin.party digital and Sportingbet in a move that will raise tax revenue and remove regulatory uncertainty hanging over operators.

As many as 59 firms have applied to operate in the cash-strapped country. Companies will pay tax at the rate of 25 percent of gross gaming revenue, Bwin.party said.

Spain has raised around 70 million euros ($87 million) in back taxes in recent weeks from companies who fell foul of decades-old decrees governing gambling. Future income from taxing online gaming will be a useful source of revenue for Spain as it struggles to rein in its deficit.

Bwin.party, the world’s largest online gaming company, said around 4 percent of its revenues were generated in Spain last year.

This week there have been bits and pieces of online gambling news from different European countries.

Denmark had initiated a regulated online gambling regime earlier this year. Now the Danish Gambling Authority has prohibited unlicensed gaming operators from advertising in any form. Even dissemination of information about online gambling operations such as website address and contact details is banned. The ban applies to print, digital and television media formats. Sponsorships in any form are also covered under the definition of advertising. This advisory was posted on the regulator's website. Also mentioned in the advisory was that unlicensed operators who ignore the ban will face stiff fines.

This Wednesday's planned opening of the half-billion-dollar Maryland Live! Casino at Arundel Mills marks a red-letter day in Maryland gaming history. The scale of the enormous, 330,000-square-foot facility is stunning: It will eventually house 4,750 slot machines (far more than any other Maryland facility) in addition to restaurants and entertainment.

No doubt the opening will be a particularly satisfying moment for developer David Cordish and others at the Cordish Cos.who overcame a considerable number of obstacles, not least a 2010 voter referendum. Even winning the bid to build the casino that many had expected to wind up at Laurel Park race track was quite a feat — and a surprise to many.

Visitors are bound to be intrigued by the casino's many dining options (Baltimore's Prime Rib and Iron Chef Bobby Flay will have places) as well as the coming-soon Rams Head concert venue. But here's what makes the destination gambling facility equivalent in size to three football fields truly amazing: Maryland's 67 percent tax rate.

The 61st edition of the Miss USA pageant will take place for the fifth straight year in Las Vegas on Sunday with the winner going to represent the United States at the Miss Universe event. That means the betting lines are out for the most prestigious beauty pageant in the country.

Join Bovada Sportsbook right now and bet Miss USA!

Miss Texas leads the way at 11/2 and that would likely be due to their storied history at the Miss USA pageant with nine wins, which is the most of all time. Their most recent win was in 2008 and the Lone Star State probably feels like they’re about due for a win. But Miss Texas will have to hold off Alaska and Rhode Island at 9/1, and neither of these states have ever won a Miss USA title. The last time that a state won for the first time was in 2006 when Kentucky took their first Miss USA crown, but it just goes to show that there is a lot of parity going into this year’s event.

Miss USA 2012 - Odds to Win
Miss Texas 11/2
Miss Alaska 9/1
Miss Rhode Island 9/1
Miss California 11/1
Miss Ohio 12/1
Miss Pennsylvania 12/1
Miss Illinois 15/1
Miss Maine 15/1
Miss Minnesota 22/1
Miss New Jersey 22/1
Miss Mississippi 25/1
Miss Georgia 25/1
Miss Oklahoma 25/1
Miss Arizona 25/1
Miss Delaware 28/1
Miss Kansas 28/1
Miss New Mexico 28/1
Miss Nevada 30/1
Miss Washington DC 30/1
Miss Florida 30/1
Miss Maryland 30/1
Miss Massachusetts 30/1
Miss Michigan 30/1
Miss Alabama 30/1
Miss Arkansas 30/1
Miss Alabama 30/1
Miss Virginia 30/1
Miss Utah 35/1
Miss Montana 35/1
Miss Idaho 35/1
Miss Kentucky 35/1
Miss Wyoming 35/1
Miss Washington 40/1
Miss Colorado 40/1
Miss Connecticut 40/1
Miss Indiana 40/1
Miss Iowa 40/1
Miss New York 40/1
Miss North Carolina 40/1
Miss Tennessee 50/1
Miss Hawaii 50/1
Miss Oregon 50/1
Miss South Carolina 50/1
Miss Louisiana 50/1
Miss Nebraska 55/1
Miss Missouri 65/1
Miss North Dakota 65/1
Miss West Virginia 65/1
Miss New Hampshire 75/1
Miss Vermont 75/1
Miss Wisconsin 75/1

California is the defending champion at 11/1, and Alyssa Campanella would love to put the crown on a fellow native of California at the end of the competition and a win for the Golden State would be their seventh as they sit in second place behind Texas. Not far behind is Ohio and Pennsylvania at 12/1, and the latter will be aiming for their second Miss USA title, which would tie them with the Buckeye State.

New Hampshire, Vermont and Wisconsin all bring up the rear at 75/1, and of that trio, only Vermont has won the title and that was way back in 1955. But much like a sporting event, you never know what is going to happen and a small wager on a longshot can pay off big, so don’t be afraid to take a risk.

The Netherlands looks set to adopt the "Danish model" for liberalizing online gambling, after the country's Justice Ministry this week ruled that the proposed "Belgian model" might not be strong enough to meet European Union laws.

Netherlands to Grant Licenses

The Dutch government first announced in March that it wanted to grant Internet gambling services in the Netherlands and lift gaming restrictions that hundreds of thousands of Dutch ignore every year. The proposal by the new coalition government represented a major shift for the country, which previously defended its online gambling ban at Europe's highest court.

Justifying the decision to the Dutch parliament at the time, State Secretary of Security and Justice Fredrik Teeven said that several European countries including France, Italy, Austria, the UK and Sweden already regulate online gambling, and that the Netherlands should also allow its citizens legal online poker, bingo and sports betting.
