Anyone who says you can get rich through gambling is a fool or a knave. Multiply the size of the prize by your chance of winning it and you’ll always get a number far lower than what you put into the pot. The only sure winners are the organizers — casino owners, state lotteries and con artists of all kinds.

Yet America is now opening the floodgates to organized gambling.

In December, the Department of Justice announced it was reversing its position that all Internet gambling was illegal.

That decision is about to create a boom in online gambling. New Jersey is close to approving a bill to allow gambling online in virtual Atlantic City casinos. Delaware, Nevada, California and Florida are considering similar bills. Within the year,

ECOGRA is an independent certification agency that tests and approves service providers to the online gambling industry. It began with accreditation for online casinos, but now covers all online gambling verticals and also software providers and affiliate programs. eCOGRA is also involved with setting regulatory benchmarks and dispute resolution. With the emergence of national regulators in most European nations the demands on the skills required of certification agencies have been increasing and eCOGRA has been found equal to the challenge. Now it has announced yet another upgrading of its resources that will enable it to take a leading role in the recently opened Denmark online gambling market.

What are the odds of this being good? Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake are set to star in an upcoming movie about illegal online gambling called Runner, Runner. Brad Furman is slated to direct, something he did on Lincoln Lawyer which was not nearly as bad as it looked on paper. The script for Runner, Runner was reportedly done by the two guys who wrote Rounders.

When a glittering $350 million casino opens next month in a former department store in downtown Cleveland, Ohioans who plan never to play the slots may still feel like they’ve hit the jackpot.

Project developers say Ohio’s first casino, combined with three more casinos soon to open in the Buckeye state, will generate 7,500 permanent jobs, 9,700 temporary construction jobs, and $600 million annually in tax revenues statewide.

Every Ohio county will get a slice of the gaming tax revenues, and some will get a bigger boost: In Columbus, a new casino is going up on the site of an abandoned auto-parts plant; the Cleveland casino is resurrecting a treasured historic site — the long-shuttered Higbee department store where scenes from the movie, “The Christmas Story,” were shot.

A North Dakota legislator is speaking out, after he says the state missed out on millions of dollars. Representative Jim Kasper says the state lost that money by turning down online gambling legislation, he proposed in 2005. After a federal ruling that the wire act, which made all forms of internet gambling illegal, does not apply to some online gaming. Kasper says his proposal to regulate internet poker in the state, provided companies relocate to the state could of worked.

Hollywood has been in the business of using the scandals of the rich and famous and the flare of its social scene for movie making for many years. Sometimes we get blockbuster hits, sometimes Academy Award winning films and other times, well, we just get really good storytelling.

In the movie Rounders, (about the exploration of New York private clubs devoted to high-stakes poker), we got really good storytelling. Characters we could identify with, a story we could relate too, drama and escapism, these all make for entertainment in my book. So when I read that Hollywood was interested in making a film garnered around the world of illegal online gambling I was like, eh!

It was 25 years ago this month that Wisconsin voters rewrote the state constitution to allow a lottery.

Then, voters didn’t know that a federal judge would rule that, by legalizing a lottery, Wisconsin had to allow tribal casinos. The constitutional change also opened several greyhound racetracks, but all of them failed.

Perhaps most stunning is that legal gambling was a $15.8 billion industry in Wisconsin last year.

Another way to think of it: Did that recent $654 million Mega Millions jackpot get your attention? Last year, that’s about what was bet every 15 days at Wisconsin casinos and on lottery games.

State officials say that $15.8 billion bet last year broke down this way: $15.3 billion was bet at tribal casinos (an 18 percent increase in 10 years), and $502 million was bet on lottery games (a 25 percent increase in 10 years).

The Gambling Commission will not make a wide-ranging call for TV gameshow regulations to be tightened amid fears certain programmes are “glamorising gambling”.

In what was thought to be one of the first investigations of its kind, the government quango was due to publish “advice” for broadcasters and producers on gameshow formats in February, but has now shelved the plans.

A spokeswoman said: “We have been and are still consulting with relevant stakeholders and we have decided that an advice note on this topic at this stage would not be the most appropriate way to help broadcasters and producers of television game shows to comply with the Gambling Act.”

Online gamblers were left frustrated yesterday after one of the biggest gambling websites went down on the busiest day of the year.

The Ladbrokes websites was unable to pay out winning bets from the Grand National due to a “technical error” which is ironic that the site boasts about providing a “interactive betting services 24 hours a day seven days a week”.

The website was reportedly overwhelmed by the sheer numbers of online punters as a result of the extra demand from the Grand National and the Scottish and English FA Cup semi-finals.

One online gambler commented: “I placed a winning bet on Saturday and I had it settled 24-and-a-half hours after the event.

The news on The X Factor in the United States has revolved over creator Simon Cowell’s hunt for new judges and it appears as though he has found at least one person to replace Paula Abdul and Nicole Schwerzinger. Britney Spears is rumored to be joining Cowell and L.A. Reid as a judge on the American version but the edition that airs in the United Kingdom is also making waves and could land Cowell in hot water.

Cowell, who is from England, brought the show overseas but on the English version he was a judge alongside pop star Danni Minogue, who is the younger sister of Kylie. It has been revealed in a biography by Tim Bower that the two may have had an affair while they were on the show together, which is big news as both were in relationships at the time: Cowell to Mezhgan Hussainy (the two split in February of this year) and Minogue to Kris Smith, although the affair may have taken place before Minogue’s relationship. Both sides have come out to deny the allegations and Cowell has taken to Twitter to further douse what could be an impending firestorm.

The biography is unauthorized and the English media loves to eat up this sort of tabloid fodder but Cowell was quoted many times in the book and stated that he had a crush on Minogue and in this day and age it isn’t a stretch to believe this happened. It actually may be more surprising if it is revealed that there was no affair but this is the era we live in now. Either way, fans of The X Factor on both sides of the pond shouldn’t have a problem finding headlines and rumors on this show.

Recent restructuring to the regulatory board of eCOGRA, a UK-based organization focused on online gaming known for its expertise in markets both old and new, have taken place to reflect the new ownership has overcome the company. More recently, in February of this year the chief executive of eCOGRA, Andrew Beveridge, has been named among the top 50 regulatory specialists in the industry by top business publication, Gaming Intelligence.

After navigating the extensive field of hurdles put in place by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service, the independent testing and standards company eCOGRA has since been empowered to work within the realm of the Danish online gambling market. The exciting news came on 13 April, 2012 in London after a rigorous accreditation process. The extension issued to eCOGRA's ISO/IEC accreditation serves as a benchmark of the level of quality upheld by the organization.

Now able to perform certification and regulation for nearly one-third of Danish-licensed casino and online gaming operators, eCOGRA will serve as a substantial governing body in all five Danish certification categories, including: gambling functions, business functions, preventative measures to counter money laundering of proceeds and financing of terrorism, vulnerability and penetration testing, and change management.

As the regulatory scene and online gaming markets in Denmark as well as the whole of Europe expands, so too will eCOGRA's near ten-year presence and reputation as a top-tier regulating body of online gambling.

Playtech, the world's biggest provider of online gaming software, plans a string of acquisitions as it branches out into the social gaming market but news that it will be buying the businesses from its main shareholder unnerved investors.

The Estonia-based firm said on Tuesday that it planned to spend 95 million euros ($124.1 million) buying assets owned by Israeli billionaire Teddy Sagi who founded Playtech and still owns a 48 percent stake in the company.

Today’s instant messaging has changed the way we view the news. The latest tweets from the floor of a conference or the phone of a politician can change the news in a flash. Most of what people read in print is old and usually well edited for the reader’s consumption. It is amazing how fast the word spreads if a law has been changed or new legislation proposed.

That is the case witnessed recently when a message was sent on the internet regarding a law in the State of New Jersey that deals with the proposal to legalize online gambling there. Currently the event where a lot of discussion regarding the laws on internet wagering in the USA is being heard is the International Masters of Gaming Law summit in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Is William Hill PLC's $53 million investment in Nevada in trouble?

No. But the British bookmaker's efforts to gain a Nevada gaming license have been delayed, despite previous expectations regulators would vote in May. The firm is seeking a license after last year's announcement that it will acquire three sports betting companies in Las Vegas.

Nevada gaming regulators were expected to consider William Hill's license application next month, but it has not been included on the May agenda.

The Guardian newspaper in London reports the application was delayed while the Nevada Gaming Control Board takes a closer look at two issues -- Robin Chhabra, William Hill's head of strategy and corporate development, and the firm's ties to Playtech in Israel.

Gamblification! This is not yet a household word but we use it to describe the intersection of social media and gambling. It is a play on the concepts of gamification and gambling. While gamification relates to using game mechanics for non game purposes, we use gamblification to refer to the use of gambling mechanics for non gambling purposes (ideally!). Given the complexity of the legal issues around this concept, it is not always easy to ensure that one does not cross the line.
