Lawyers for the Nevada Resort Association head to court to try to nix a proposed ballot initiative increasing taxes on the state's largest earning casinos.
Carson City District Judge Todd Russell hears arguments Wednesday on challenges by the casino association to the wording of the initiative sponsored by Nevadans for a Fair 9 percent Gambling Revenue Tax.
The initiative backed by conservative Las Vegas businessman Monte Miller would raise the top tier of gambling taxes to 9 percent, up from 6.75 percent, for casinos that make more than $250,000 a month in gambling revenue. If approved, the proposal would affect about 170 of Nevada's 448 casino license holders.
In the alternative, the gambling association has proposed its own initiative language stating the measure amounts to a hefty casino tax increase.

Five months after voters rejected proposals for three new gambling facilities in Maine, lawmakers hope to set guidelines for future development of casinos and racinos, including a competitive bidding process. The Maine House gave preliminary approval Wednesday to a bill to prohibit the state from accepting new applications for casinos or racinos after September. An 18-member commission would spend a year studying the effects of the state's two operating casinos -- one in Bangor and one that will open soon in Oxford -- and report back to lawmakers in February 2014 with recommendations on establishment of competitive bidding for proposed gambling venues.

Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake wants the legislature to pass legislation to add poker, blackjack and other Las Vegas-style table games at all Maryland casinos and authorize a sixth casino site, to be located in Prince George’s County, a spokeswoman for the mayor told the Baltimore Business Journal.

Imagine finding out as a parent that your teenager is gambling. You never wanted him/her to gamble, you never encouraged it. But the kid’s started and there’s nothing you can do about it. Or is there?
Instead of letting him lose his money to his friends, what if you set up your own blackjack table and let him gamble at home?
You would make a profit, and you could use some of it for recreation for the entire family, maybe for that trip you’re saving up for. You could also use some of the money to provide incentives to your other children to stay away from gambling.

A new gambling proposal has emerged in the waning days of the legislative session. It would allow the Passmaquoddy Tribe to operate up to 100 slot machines at its high stakes bingo hall in Calais. The unexpected request followed yesterday's House approval of a bill that would permit veterans groups and charitable organizations to operate up to five slot machines at their facilities.
There have been a number of gambling proposals floated in Augusta in recent days. First there was House approval this week of a bill that freezes new casino license applications until a new study commission can be created. The House then also passed legislation that would permit a handful of slot machines in Maine's veterans posts and service clubs. Given the climate, House approval of a tribal slots bills was not that far of a reach.

A plan to put a 12-month moratorium on new casinos in Maine, starting next September, while a new commission studies the impact of the state's two gambling facilities, may be an idea whose time has come.
But it may also be an idea whose time has passed.
The bill, L.D. 1987, is sponsored by Rep. Linda Valentino, D-Saco, a long-time advocate of evaluating the effects of casino gambling.

Separate bills to allow civic groups to operate slot machines and establish a statewide commission to recommend guidelines for future gambling operations were passed yesterday by the House. Both await future votes in the Senate.
According to the Portland Press Herald, a bill to allow veterans and charitable fraternal organizations, such American Legion posts and Eagle/Elks clubs, to operate up to five slot machines passed by a 88-57 vote. The bill would set a statewide 250-machine cap, require the groups to pay 8% to the state general fund, 10% to the Gambling Control Board and 2% to gambling prevention and treatment efforts. LePage spokeswoman Adrienne Bennett told the paper the governor has not yet taken a position on the bill, which awaits a final vote in the Senate and is being opposed by the Christian Civic League of Maine.
The race to represent the Republican Party in this year’s presidential election has gone on much longer than it ever had to and Massachusetts’ Mitt Romney just can’t seem to seal the deal. But one of his competitors basically waved the white flag on Tuesday and all that is standing in the way of Romney’s path to the election trail is one man.
2012 US Presidential Election - Winning Party
Democratic Party -210
Republican Party +170
Romney took a huge step by winning the primaries in Maryland, Washington D.C. and Wisconsin on April 3rd, and along with a victory in Illinois on March 20th, it would take a massive scandal of epic proportions for anyone to leapfrog the Massachusetts governor. Candidate Rick Santorum has decided to suspend his campaign for the time being, but that is short for “I’m finished”, especially at this point in the race and now it’s a matter of who he will endorse going forward.
Join Bovada Sportsbook right now and make your Presidential vote count today.
Georgia’s Newt Gingrich isn’t throwing in the towel yet despite winning fewer delegates than Santorum last Tuesday, and he has stated that he wants to continue to give the Republican Party another option. However, it seems as though the Party has spoken and even if Santorum’s followers decided to join Gingrich, it probably still wouldn’t be enough to unseat Romney.
All this is great news for President Barack Obama, who is still gathering funds for his campaign and the more that the Republicans haggle amongst themselves, the better it is for his re-election. Romney may not even stand much of a chance against Obama in the first place but he is the best option out of what’s available and the Republicans really need to come together if they’re going to get back into the White House.
Anyone who says you can get rich through gambling is a fool or a knave. Multiply the size of the prize by your chance of winning it, and you'll always get a number far lower than what you put into the pot. The only sure winners are the organizers - casino owners, state lotteries and con artists of all kinds.
Yet America is now opening the floodgates to organized gambling.
April 15, widely known as tax-deadline day, carries a starker meaning for fans of online gambling.
On April 15, 2011, federal authorities shut down U.S. operations of the three largest online-poker sites, stopping thousands of people from playing and tying up millions of dollars they had deposited or won.
Since "Black Friday," actions by the Justice Department, casino and online companies and several states indicate legal online gambling in the United States is tantalizingly close but still months away.

Variety reports that Timberlake and Ben Affleck will star in the thriller "Runner, Runner" with "The Lincoln Lawyer" helmer Brad Furman to direct. Exact story and character details are not forthcoming just yet, but it will be set in the high stakes world of illegal online gambling. The script comes from writers David Levien and Brian Koppelman, no strangers to playing the odds. The duo wrote "Rounders" which also looked at gambling from another angle, but a lot has changed since 1998 when that film hit theaters. Online gambling has made it possible for almost anyone with internet connection and some money to spend able to make millions all while wearing jogging pants and devouring Cheetos.
It's a tantalizing project, though it remains to be seen when it will roll in front of cameras. Affleck will likely be in post/doing press for "Argo" as it heads into theaters this fall. Meanwhile, Timberlake is going back-to-back on the Coen Brothers "Inside Llewyn Davis" and is shooting "Trouble With The Curve" with Clint Eastwood this spring. Of everybody, Furman seems the most open with only a Pablo Escobar biopic brewing in the background. But hell, getting Affleck, Timberlake, Levien and Koppelman together is not a bad start at all. Furman directed a decent potboiler in 'Lawyer,' and this seems like another thriller that will be step above. Here's hoping it pulls together soon.
The market place for new and exciting online gambling products is usually showcased at the big trade expositions held around the world. Some products are aimed specifically at certain markets and are geared to give the maximum potential to consumers in various jurisdictions. The Asian Pacific gambling market is unregulated for the most part and requires extra care during the developing and launching of specific applications. Conferences and expositions give the operators and producers an opportunity to introduce their products and get vital feedback from industry professionals.

It is really starting to heat up on the 11th season of American Idol as we’re down to the top seven but it could have been six if the judges hadn’t decided to use their “save” on a singer that many thought (and still think) is the favorite to come out on top of the reality competition.
Jessica Sanchez has never been in trouble on American Idol and she has been lauded for her maturity for being a 16-year-old but she stumbled this week with her rendition of Jazmine Sullivan’s “Stuttering” and landed in the bottom three with Joshua Ledet, who sang Bruno Mars’ “Runaway Baby” and Elise Testone after her version of Lady Gaga’s “You and I” (Testone also did a duet with Phil Phillips as they performance Goyte’s “Somebody That I Used To Know”). The theme for this week on American Idol was “Songs From The 2010s”, something familiar for most of the viewers.

The judges, Randy Jackson, Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez received one save that they could use at any point this season, but once it’s used, it’s gone. The trio decided to use their save on Sanchez, who was voted out by viewers, and the judges obviously disagreed as they brought her back into the fold after she began to sing her save song, which was Deborah Cox’s “Nobody’s Supposed To Be Here”. It didn’t take long for the judges to use their save as Sanchez didn’t even get to the chorus.
American Idol Season 11- Odds to Win
Colton Dixon 8/5
Phillip Phillips 9/4
Jessica Sanchez 3/1
Joshua Ledet 12/1
Skylar Laine 12/1
Elise Testone 30/1
Hollie Cavanagh 30/1
It may have been a turning point for Sanchez, who some have called cocky and she may have been overconfident coming into this week. She even admitted that she wasn’t surprised that she was voted off, and this could be the kick in the pants to steer the talented teen back in the right direction on American Idol.
