Rooms at the Hotel Arts, Barcelona have been illegally entered, and laptops of online poker players have been compromised, a spokesperson from PokerStars confirmed Thursday. There have been two confirmed cases, and potentially many more unconfirmed.

A poker player reported on the 2+2 poker forums yesterday that he and another guest discovered their laptops missing from the hotel room. Reporting the crime then returning ten minutes later, their laptops reappeared in the room.

PokerStars representative Lee Jones responded publicly soon after the original report indicating that there had been two confirmed cases so far. He also confirmed that the Barcelona police have been involved, and PokerStars is working with the hotel staff to try to identify the culprits.

If poker players are suspected to be targeted, then it is feasible some form of trojan was installed in order to gain remote unauthorized access to their laptops. For example, hidden screen-sharing programs can illicitly share hole cards while the player plays online; keyloggers can track and “send home” key-presses in order to uncover passwords—of online poker rooms, email addresses, ewallets or other sensitive accounts.

It is unclear whether the laptops in question were removed from the room and replaced, or if the culprit hid in the hotel room with the laptops when the guests first returned.

Britain’s Tom Middleton has emerged victorious in the 2013 European Poker Tour Barcelona €5,300 no-limit hold’em main event, topping a field of 1,234 to earn €942,000 ($1,241,650) and 1,920 Card Player Player of the Year points. The 26-year-old poker pro from Leeds now sits in 29th place in the overall POY standings as a result.

With this win Middleton increased his lifetime live and online combined tournament winnings to more than $3 million dollars. Known as “hitthehole” online, Middleton has nearly $1.2 million in internet winnings alone. This was Middleton’s 12th career title, with his largest prior victory coming in a $5,000 event at the 2012 Fallsview Poker Classic for $304,980.

This time around Middleton defeated Finnish poker pro Kimmo Kurko heads-up for the title and the lion’s share of the €5,984,900 ($7,888,697) prize pool. Kurko took home €750,000 ($988,575) as a result of a deal the two made during heads-up play, as well as 1,600 POY points for his strong showing. With one prior final table finish under his belt this year the Finn has climbed to 30th place in the POY rankings.

Last month we discussed how Croatian poker hottie Hana Soljan had been chosen to represent Full Tilt Poker as a Tour Ambassador at the Eureka Poker Tour. Just a few short weeks on and now the 28-year-old has gotten off the blocks in style, having bested an 86-player field at the €330 buy-in EPT Barcelona Ladies Event to capture the title, and collect the €6,880 ($9,203) first place prize.

The TV presenter, who only cashed in at her first live tournament a little over two years ago, now boasts $37,479 in prize money thanks to her latest score. Impressively, from her eight career cashes, Hana Soljan has actually won six of those events, with her previous biggest score to date coming in 2011 at the $90 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure for $8,490.

Commenting on what her most recent victory means to her, the Croatian beauty, explained: “To be a part of the Full Tilt team is a dream come true for me. They chose to sponsor a player who they believe in and me the opportunity to win some big titles. It is hope for lots of players in the world..And every win is not just mine, it is for the team, and that is the best part!”

Hana’s keen interest in playing games was instilled in her from a young age having grow up with a family of card fans. Her father also taught her poker, a game which says has helped her to be a better student in school and given her the discipline required to achieve a degree in Entrepreneurial Management from the University of Applied Sciences.

Hana Soljan’s poker success also serves as an inspiration for other ladies hoping to compete in the male dominated world of poker, and offering pearls of wisdom to her fellow women, Hana commented:

“My best advice is to start with ladies tournaments in live poker and small buy-ins with lots of players online. And be confident and brave. We can do it as well as they do, if not better!”

September 19 is the date to keep free if you are an avid online poker player in Nevada, as that is the date the real money poker service on WSOP-com will officially be launched.

The announcement was made by Caesars Interactive Entertainment on Monday, with the service to go live at 9:19 am local time (September 19 being 9/19, thus 9:19 am on 9/19). The much anticipated launch of WSOP-com will make it the second real money online poker service in Nevada, with the other being Ultimate Poker, which has enjoyed a monopoly since launching in late April.

There will likely be some strong competition between the two companies after Thursday’s launch and Caesars have put forward some strategies that will immediately give Ultimate Poker a run for its money. One such attribute is that WSOP-com will be Mac friendly, which certainly makes it more attractive to a broader range of players.

Along with the Mac friendliness, the WSOP name will also likely guarantee that it will attract some initial interest from online poker players in the western American state. WSOP (World Series Of Poker, as I’m sure most of us already know) is a brand that is synonymous with poker as well as Las Vegas, the main city of Nevada.

Due to that, it is likely that poker players throughout Nevada will be attracted to the service out of curiosity and intrigue. The question is whether or not WSOP-com will be able to keep those players beyond the short term after their curiosities have been satisfied.

That is something Caesars CEO Mitch Garber hopes will happen. Garber said that the impending launch of the real money service was a major move in what has been a long and distinguished history of the WSOP.

“This is a historic moment for our company,” Garber stated. “This is really the beginning of a domino effect.”

That domino effect, in Garber’s view, is similar to what happened to land-based casino gaming in the US. Nevada was the pioneer city with regard to land-based gaming in the country, which paved the way for the establishment of casinos in other parts of the nation.

He pointed to the fact that other states, like New Jersey and Delaware, have legalised and allowed for an online gaming market to be set up, which is indicative of an online gambling domino effect happening in the US.

“Already, we see that the state of New Jersey has legalized online poker and online casino games and we have made an application for a license in the state of New Jersey as well,” Garber said. “Delaware has legalized online poker. This momentum, we believe, is real, and the state of Nevada is at the very cutting edge and the beginning of what we think is going to be a very large wave of future legalization of online poker and online gaming.”

It is unknown what the future holds for the growing online poker industry in Nevada when WSOP-com launches its real money offering. Whatever ends up happening, Nevada’s online poker market will soon become a lot more interesting.

The World Poker Tour's Borgata Poker Open came to a conclusion this weekend and it was Boston’s Anthony Zinno who emerged victorious.

Zinno, the 32-year old lawyer turned poker pro, bested the field of 1,189 runners to capture the $825,099 first place prize as well as the title of WPT Champion.

Before he could do that he first had to get by one of the most recognizable names in the poker world, Vanessa Selbst.

Selbst, who finished as runner-up to the tune of just over $492,000, was looking to become the first female poker player to win an open World Poker Tour event. While Selbst had a shot, holding a chip advantage at the start of heads-up play, a pair of all-in confrontations found her behind with no help from the board to deny her the historic victory.

Cong Pham who held the chip lead both on Day 4 and into the Final Table, fell in 3rd place for over $300,000 followed by Jeremy Kottler ($251,968), David Randall ($208,394) and Eric Fields ($168,610).

The World Poker Tour’s next stop is the Grand Prix de Paris on October 25-30.

The Final Table is set at the World Poker Tour's 2013 Borgata Poker Open. The final six players will take their seats at the televised final table today and battle it out for the $825,099 first place prize and the title of WPT Champion.

Day 4 chip leader, Cong Pham, enters the final day with the chip lead as well, sitting on over 100bb at the start of play.

That said, the biggest name in the final six is that of Vanessa Selbst, one of the most dangerous tournament players on the planet. Selbst returns with 79bb, which is plenty to work with for the two-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner and back-to-back NAPT Main Event Champion.

Boston’s Anthony Zinno also has a healthy stack of 69bb. According to Hendon Mob stats, while Zinno has numerous 5-figure scores in his time on the felt, no matter where he finishes today, it will be a career high cash for him. The next player out will walk with over $168k.

Poker professionals Jeremy Kottler and David Randall both sit with between 35-40bb as 22 year-old WSOP Circuit Champ Eric Fields wields the short stack at 31bb.

For all the updates, starting at 3:00pm EST.

The Mississippi Gaming Commission has released its casino results for August, revealing a slight rise in revenue to $179.1 million compared to $178.4 million for the same month a year ago.

Breaking the figures down further, the 12 Gulf Coast casinos generated $90 million in revenue, up 4.3% over last August’s tally of $86.3 million. However, the 18 riverboat casinos saw thier revenues decline by 3.3% to $89 million compared to the $92.1 million reported last year.

Mississippi’s latest casino figures represents only the second time revenue has increased in the southern state this year, and just further highlights the challenges facing Mississippi’s beleagured gaming industry, which has been in steady decline since 2007. July 2008 then saw Mississippi’s single-month winnings hit a record $268 million before consistently dropping off to their current levels.

As well as the global recession affecting growth, increased competition from nearby states such as Arkansas and Louisiana have added to Mississippi’s woes. Last month, for instance, Louisiana saw its casino figures rise by an impressive 14% to $215 million compared to the $188 million generated for the same month the previous year. Louisiana has now seen its casino revenue figures increase steadily over the past few years, with the $2.4 billion the state collected in 2012 a marked improvement on the $2.37 billion it collected in 2011.

Commenting on Mississippi’s worrying situation, Gaming Commission executive director Allen Godfrey, said: “People are more cautious with their money now..They just stopped coming. And we have to come up with the amenities to bring them back.”

Nevertheless, Mississippi can take solace in the fact that it is just one of many US markets also suffering declines in recent times. States posting declines in August, for instance, include Missouri down 3.4% decline to $89.2 million; Detroit down 3.5% to $112.9 million; Atlantic City down 4.8% to $298m; Michigan down 3.5% to $112.9m, and Ohio down 1.6% to $70.9m.

No one enjoys being slow rolled, not least Mike Matusow, who famously went on one of his rants in 2011 while playing a $1k Super-Turbo Sit and Go on Full Tilt Poker. As the 45 year-old explained at the time:

“Playing super turbos guy rses i ship 77 he types in i usually wouldnt call but i hear you run bad 1 sec left calls with aa name Scoss, scum..Want everyone who knows this scumbag or is friends with him to know hes lucky i dont have him removed from full tilt name Scoss.”

Well, this time around Mike Matusow has suffered the same experience while playing a live $25/$50 NLHE cash game as part of Poker Night in America TV show. On this occasion it was high-stakes pro Shaun Deeb who committed the frowned upon practice in poker, although you wouldn’t tell it from the reaction of the other players at the table.

In the hand in question, Shaun Deeb took around half a minute to decide whether to call Matusow’s all-in bet for $4,575 holding quad fives on a 10-5-5-4 board. Matusow (J-J) then tried to stay calm after the table erupted in fits of laughter, before volunteering:

“I’ve never slowrolled anybody in my entire life. I never will.”

Following a short break, a fuming Mike Matusow then threatened to quit the game, after which Deeb offers a semi-apology during which an irate Matusow steams in with:

“It’s the only thing in life I don’t f***ing deal with..If you ever f***ing slowroll me I’ll punch you in the f***ing mouth. You think I’m joking, I’m not.”

The slowroll may have been hilarious and disrespectful in equal measure, but to his credit Matusow proved a good sport, maybe because of the low stakes involved or because he realized Deeb was just trying to spice up the TV show. Either way, Matusow stayed playing in the game until the end.

With a victory in a $215 buy-in tournament on Party Poker this past weekend, for $9500, professional online poker player Chris “moorman1” Moorman becomes the first poker player in history to claim over $10M in total online tournament winnings.

Moorman, according to his recently launched website, has a number of impressive accolades including being ranked the #1 online player in the world 18 different times. Most recently he earned the rank of #1 online player in the UK in September 2013.

In fact, online poker player tracking site PocketFives-com shows that Moorman is not only the first and only player with $10M in cashes, he is the only player with over $7M, making him far and away the most decorated online tournament player in the world.

“Thanks for all the support and kind messages along the way, it feels great to finally get there. The last $50k felt so hard. Now it’s time to get to work on the next 10 million tomorrow,” Moorman posted on the PocketFives-com forums.

Moorman has quite a ways to go to match the more than $19M won in cash games by Phil Ivey, and also trails Patrik Antonius who has registered over $11M in winnings at the tables according to highstakesdb-com

Season 10 of the European Poker Tour (EPT) continues today as EPT London kicks off from its new venue—the Grand Connaught Rooms in London’s Covent Garden.

The poker festival, taking place October 2-12, spans 36 events including events under the United Kingdom Ireland Poker Tour (UKIPT) banner.

The festivities kick off with Day 1A of the £1,000 + £100 UKIPT Main Event on October 2.

The next major event will take place on Friday October 4 when the £50,000 EPT10 8-Handed Super High Roller with Unlimited Re-Entry is expected to draw some of the biggest names in professional poker to the felt.

Then on Sunday, October 6 Day 1A of the £5,000 + £250 EPT London Main Event begins as officials hope to best the 647 runners that took part in EPT9 London this past March.

In addition, there is a number of side events with various buyins spanning multiple poker disciplines, including PLO, Omaha High/Low, Omaha 8/Stud8 and a Chinese Poker tournament as well. The full schedule of all 36 events is available directly from the European Poker Tour website.

This season, players are able to buyin to all EPT London events via their PokerStars account up to two hours ahead of time, as well as use traditional methods of cash and debit cards. With that, PokerStars is trying to get the word out to players on what is necessary to get registered for tournaments and where to go if players want a seat in a cash game.

The registration process is not as straight forward as it could be, so PokerStars created an infographic to help players save time and decide how they want to register.

EPT Live, with Joe Stapleton and James Hartigan, will also be back on the air covering all the action starting on October 4 with Day 1 of the EPT London Super High Roller. Daily live coverage with commentary continues straight through to the EPT London Main Event Final Table (with Hole Cards) on October 12.

Germany’s Martin Finger was crowned the champion of the European Poker Tour (EPT) £50k Super High Roller event on Sunday.

Finger bested the field of 57 entries (41 unique players, 16 re-entrys) for a payday of £821,000 ($1,321,317), the trophy and his 2nd Shamballa Jewels bracelet worth £10,000.

The victory puts Finger in elite company as being one of the only players to win both an EPT Main Event—he was victorious at EPT Prague back in 2011—as well as an EPT High Roller event. According to the PokerStars Blog, the only other two players to perform such a feat are Team PokerStars Pros Jason Mercier and Bertrant “ElkY” Grospellier. Additionally, this pushes Finger up over $3.5m in worldwide tournament winnings since 2010.

Finger wasn’t the only German in contention at the final table as four of the final eight players hailed from Germany, including Tobias Reinkemeier, who finished 2nd to Finger for £593,900 and Christoph Vogelsang who took 3rd for £383,200.

As would be expected for a tournament with a small exclusive player base, the final table was packed with big names. Before Finger would hoist the trophy he had to battle through the bust outs of Patrik Antonius, 2013 November Niner David Benefield, Canada’s Timothy Adams, Jonannes Strassmann and the likable businessman turned shot taker, Bill Perkins.

Even though Finger entered the final table with a healthy chip lead, he was thankful to get the victory in the end.

“I thought I had a pretty good chance to win and finally I did… It feels awesome. The field of a Super High Roller is so tough; tough to beat all of them in one tournament.” Finger commented to the PokerStars Blog.

British poker pro Chris Moorman is an online poker phenomenon in and of himself, recently reaching an unprecedented lifetime career $10 million in online poker tourney cashes. The 28-year-old has had almost 6,000 online poker cashes on PokerStars, PartyPoker, Full Tilt Poker, and the iPoker Network over the past seven years—a feat no other poker player has accomplished. Furthermore, he has 15 online poker triple crowns meaning that he’s won three online tournaments on three different sites within a week’s time 15 times throughout his career. In total, he has finished in the top three places in online poker tournaments 546 times, finishing first place 223 of those times. Moorman’s biggest online payout was for $235K.

In addition to his online winnings, he has earned about $3 million in live poker events including 19 WSOP cashes, the best of those being a second place finish in 2011 in the $10K NLH Six Handed Championship. Moorman doesn’t let the success all go to his head though. He remains humble and grateful for his gift.

On making the $10 million mark, he says, “I’ve seen many incredibly successful players get burned out over the years, but thankfully I continue to enjoy the game more than ever. To be able to wake up and get to do something I love every day makes me feel truly blessed. I feel that the 10 million mile stone is a testament to my dedication and ultimate passion for the game of poker and challenging myself to be the best that I can be.”

The second most successful player in online poker tournaments is Jon “PearlJammer” Turner, who has about $7 million in winnings, according to PocketFives. As far as cash games go, Phil Ivey is at about $17 million, and Patrik Antonius at just over $11 million.

In the span of just about two years since his screen name “Seb86” appeared on Full Tilt Poker, Sebastien Sabic has become one of online poker’s biggest winners of all time. According to tracking from HighstakesDB, less than 70,000 hands of action have netted him more than $2.5 million in winnings, which is good for the top 25 winners in online poker history.

Over at PokerStars, he is up more than $660,000 lifetime.

The Frenchman started off his career playing no-limit hold’em and other big bet games, but eventually graduated to the nosebleed mixed games, which arguably feature the most action these days in the high-stakes poker world. Sabic also found that his winrate was stronger in the in games other than no-limit.

He doesn’t travel the tournament circuit too much these days, opting instead to grind online. However, he did make it out to Las Vegas this summer for some World Series of Poker action. He cashed once.

Here, Sabic talks with Card Player about his experiences as a high-stakes regular.

Brian Pempus: First, can you tell me about how you found the game of poker?

Sebastien Sabic: Like most people, I would say, I saw it on TV and then decided to deposit some money online. I was terrible at first, though, and needed a few small reloads. When I realized I wasn’t really good at no-limit hold’em, I decided to try other games. That’s how I first decided to dabble in mixed games and deuce-to-seven.

BP: What kind of mistakes did you make early on in your career?

SS: I made many. One of the biggest was probably trying too many things at the same time. You can’t get good at every game at once. It took me a while to settle on a game — deuce-to-seven — and grind my way up. I used to play three days of no-limit hold’em cash, then a tournament, then Omaha eight-or-better or something. You never really learn doing that, and you sure can’t grow a bankroll. I probably focused too much on live poker at some point in my career. I used to travel quite a bit to play mixed cash and tournaments. I now see it as a big waste of time, energy and money. Your hourly rate is always better online and you spend a lot less money this way. Plus, you stay away from meeting the wrong people.

BP: So, do you try to stay away from staking people, loaning money, and so on? Is that one of the biggest dangers to a bankroll, especially one that is developing?

SS: I wouldn’t say it’s the biggest danger to a bankroll, as you would need to be a bit stupid to loan and stake people for a big percentage of your bankroll, but it’s a danger when you start traveling for poker and meeting a lot of people. You usually assume that because they are famous in the poker world they are better and richer than they actually are, and you are quite easy to impress at first.

BP: What’s the high-stakes online community like just in terms of the character of the people?

SS: I would say it’s very important to have a small, very close group of friends you can talk poker with and maybe sell action to and/or transfer money. You improve a lot this way, but you have to know who your true friends are. Many poker players get confused about this. As far as character, I think a lot of high-stakes pro are a lot alike. In order to be good at poker you need to have the will to spend a lot of time in front of the computer, both playing and working on your game. You also must have that gamble in you to make it big. Most people do not have all of those character traits, so most of the time when I meet another regular in the high-stakes games I can see a lot of similarities with me. I can relate to almost all the high-stakes pros that I have read, for example.

BP: Continuing with that thought: If you could sum up what you think makes you such a great player, what would you say? What is it about your skill set?

SS: There is a fine line between being confident enough to play big, take shots, play against very famous and feared players, and so on, and being humble enough so that you don’t play too big for your bankroll and against players who are simply superior. It’s hard to find that balance, where you would make the most out of opportunities you might get but also not blow up and lose a large chunk of your bankroll. I think in the end that’s what makes the difference between a high-stakes regular you see year after year and the others who pass by and disappear, never to be seen again. The ability to question your own game is also very important. There is stuff that I have been doing, like taking a certain line in certain spot, which I have been implementing since I started playing and never really questioned why I was thinking that way. Sometimes it came from reading something on a forum or reading it in a book, so I applied it to my game as if it was some godly truth. Obviously, not all of it was and you have to be able to figure out what to absorb and what to discard.

BP: Do you think any games or forms of poker (heads-up limit hold’em, perhaps) are pretty much solved or are theoretically possible to solve?

SS: Well, I am sure heads-up razz is solvable. I would be surprised if no-limit hold’em six-max with 300 big blinds per player is solvable. All the other games are probably somewhere in the middle. Generally speaking, the more often you will encounter the same spot, the easier it is to solve, obviously. It might be an issue for poker in the long run, but not that much for the high-stakes games. But for lower stakes, bots could easily beat these games and thus take money out of the poker economy. I don’t think we have seen any game solved so far, though. Top regulars at all games have different styles and they all seem to do well. Limit hold’em might be the game the closest to being solved, but I only play it in mixed games against people who definitely didn’t solve it.

The Main Event of the 7th Annual World Series of Poker Europe played down to their final table yesterday leaving only six players to compete for the €1,000,000 first place prize and the title of WSOP Europe Main Event Champion.

Day 4 started with 24 players still in the field with action expected to take it down to an eight-handed final table. Instead, play proceeded so rapidly that event organizers opted to play past the original plan and leave only 6 players to return on Friday for Day 5.

Spain’s Adrian Mateos will take his seat at the final table with a commanding chip lead over the majority of the rest of the field, as he attempts to make his first career WSOP cash a championship score.

Not terribly far behind him though is WSOP bracelet winner and World Poker Tour Champion Dominik Nitsche. Additionally France’s own WSOP bracelet winner, Fabrice Soulier, is also within striking distance of the chip leader at the start of play.

The final 6 are rounded out with 2011 European Poker Tour London Champion Benny Spindler, World Poker Tour Five Diamond Champion Ravi Raghavan and local entrant Jerome Huge.

Here’s the final six and their chip counts:

Seat 1: Benny Spindler – 1,748,000
Seat 2: Fabrice Soulier – 1,871,000
Seat 3: Dominik Nitsche – 2,354,000
Seat 4: Adrian Mateos – 3,781,000
Seat 5: Ravi Raghavan – 898,000
Seat 6: Jerome Huge – 637,000

With Thursday being a planned day off, the final six will return on Friday to play down to a winner with everyone at the table guaranteed no less than a €126,000 payday.

It was a historic day for one of the most popular poker players on the planet as not only did Daniel Negreau lock up the 2013 World Series of Poker Player of the Year Award today, he also won his 6th career bracelet by taking down the WSOPE €25,600 High Roller Event.

Negreanu started the day as a short stack, looking to hang on to both make the money and, more importantly, to place 8th or higher to become the first person in WSOP history to win the prestigious WSOP Player of the Year race two times in a career.

By the end of the day Daniel outlasted an absolutely stacked final high roller table to claim his 6th WSOP bracelet as well as the €725,000 first place prize money. Names like Erik Seidel, Jason Koon, Scott Seiver, Timothy Adams, David Peters, Philipp Gruissem and eventually Nicolau Villa Lobos all had to fall before victory could belong to “Kid Poker.”

In the end, Villa-Lobos and Negreanu got all the chips in the middle with Negreanu holding a dominating over pair of Jacks to Villa-Lobos pocket fives which sealed the deal for Negreanu.

Here are the final table results from the WSOPE High Roller Event:

1st: Daniel Negreanu – Canada – €725,000
2nd: Nicolau Villa-Lobo – Brazil – €450,000
3rd: Philipp Gruissem – Germany – €250,000
4th: David Peters – USA – €150,500
5th: Timothy Adams – Canada – €100,600
6th: Scott Seiver – USA – €74,600
7th: Jason Koon – USA – €63,500
8th: Erik Seidel – USA – €55,400
