After a chance to relax with friends and family for the holidays, poker players from around the world are taking to the roads and skies this week as the first major live poker tournaments of 2012 get underway. The big boys – World Poker Tour, European Poker Tour, and World Series of Poker (Circuit, of course) – are all in action this first week of the year.

The World Poker Tour (WPT) kicks off 2012 tomorrow with WPT Ireland. Hosted by the Citywest Hotel, Conference, Leisure, and Gold Resort in Dublin, the €2,500 Main Event is scheduled to run four days, ending with the televised final table on Sunday, January 8th. This is the first time the World Poker Tour will make a stop in the Emerald Isle.

Running concurrently with the Main Event will be the Irish Poker Championship as well as a handful of lower buy-in, single day tournaments. The Irish Poker Championship (€675 + €75) will begin on Friday and will run through the weekend. Satellites are currently running for WPT Ireland, while the Irish Poker Championship will have its own qualifiers right up until start time.

The European Poker Tour’s (EPT) most popular stop, the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA), also begins Thursday with its most expensive tournament, the $98,500 + $1,500 Super High Roller 8-Max Re-entry event, scheduled as a three day televised event. The $10,000 + $300 Main Event will see its first hand dealt on Saturday, January 7th with the first of two Day 1 flights and will conclude next Friday, January 13th (Friday the 13th – expect lots of bad beats?) with the televised and webcast final table.

There are over 30 additional open events on the docket at the PCA over the next week and half, including what is to some the most anticipated tournament, the PCA Battleship Main Event. This event is a heads-up tournament played online, but in person, with competitors playing on laptops right in front of each other. The monitors of the laptops are placed back to back with the players facing each other, reminiscent of what it looks like when people play each other in the popular “Battleship” family game.

As usual, the PCA will take place at the incredible Atlantis Resort and Casino on Paradise Island in the Bahamas.

The World Series of Poker (WSOP) Circuit stop at the Bicycle Casino in Bell Gardens, California is actually already underway, as tournaments started up on New Year’s Day. All told, there will be a dozen official WSOP Circuit ring events at The Bike through January 12th with many more smaller buy-in non-ring events on the schedule, as well. The $1,600 Main Event is the tenth of the twelve ring events, starting on Tuesday, January 10th and featuring three days of play (with two Day 1 flights). The Main Event is a re-entry tournament, as players eliminated on Day 1A can jump back in on Day 1B, provided they pony up another buy-in.

One of the most polarizing issues in the poker world today is the emergence of re-entry tournaments and whether or not they are good for the overall health of the poker industry and economy.

A re-entry event is different from a rebuy event in that a player cannot “re-entry” until he has been already eliminated from the tournament. While some events allow players to buy back in immediately, others force them to wait until the next starting day.

The concept is nothing new, but in a down economy, re-entry events have become the latest trend on the always-evolving tournament circuit.

The theory is that by lowering the buy-in and allowing players to re-enter the tournament, you’ll get the best of both worlds. Those with the bankrolls to gamble it up in the early levels will juice the prize pool and those with smaller bankrolls will get to enjoy a shot at a big payday for a smaller entry fee.

Bellagio tournament director Jack McClelland’s current main event isn’t a re-entry, but he did experiment with the new freezeout variation during his preliminary events. When asked whether it was casino profit, the need for change or customer demand that motivated him to host the event, he said, “all of the above.”

“When things were really rolling in the poker world, we had tons of players for our regular freezeouts,” said McClelland. “Then when the economy took a dive, we tried to increase our prize pools by offering rebuys. Those didn’t really work out, because they scared away those with lower bankrolls who couldn’t afford multiple buy-ins. So far, it looks like re-entry events appeal to players of all bankrolls. The buy-ins are low enough to bring in casual players, but still allow the pros to come in and do their thing.” The World Poker Tour has popularized these events in the last year, lowering their buy-ins at some marquee stops in California, New Jersey and Florida to $3,500 from their traditional $10,000 and creating multiple starting days. The end result has been bigger fields, but also more money for the host casino. Not only are the players raked on each re-entry, but they are also staying at the casinos for longer periods of time, taking up rooms in the hotel and filling the restaurants each night.

Will Failla won the first re-entry event of WPT Season X, the Legends of Poker main event at the Bicycle Casino back in August. That event saw 181 players eliminated on the first starting day, of which 116 re-registered for day 1B. Failla didn’t have to go beyond his first buy-in in that event, but the casino undoubtedly benefited from the added entrants, taking an additional $23,200 in rake and another $12,180 in fees. *

“It’s just the way things are right now,” said Failla. “The casinos are finding a way to take some extra rake and please their customers. People don’t want to travel across the country, play for an hour and then be sent home, but they are going to pay for it one way or another, not only in the poker room, but also in the hotels and restaurants. I’ll admit, I’m one of those guys. It may not be fair to everyone, but I’d be foolish not take advantage of it.”

Failla wasn’t the only one who felt that re-entry tournaments gave the tournament regulars an advantage. Jonathan Little has made four final tables, won two titles and cashed for over $3.5 million on the WPT, but even he doesn’t like re-entry tournaments. “You would think that I would like re-entry tournaments because they favor players such as myself, but I don’t,” said Little. “I think these types of events put the casual players at a tremendous disadvantage and in general, put the entire game in jeopardy. The bottom line is that if the fish keep going broke and stop playing entirely, then the poker community as a whole will suffer. That’s why I think the whole re-entry thing is a little shortsighted.”

Christian Harder, who has made two WPT final tables and cashed for nearly $1 million, agreed with Little, but argued that it is more difficult for some players to secure a backing arrangement for re-entry events, lowering the field size and the prize pool in the long run.

“Re-entry tournaments actually hurt the poker community, because players who can only afford one buy-in are less likely to play, knowing they have a built-in disadvantage,” said Harder. “It especially hurts those players who are backed because it’s tough for backers to justify spending more than one buy-in on their horses. Their total cost is uncertain, so they wind up leaving their players on the rail instead.”

Former WPT champion Kevin Saul went further, explaining why those with only one buy-in were at such as disadvantage. “It’s up to the backer’s discretion, but most of the players that I know who are getting backed for these events are generally getting two bullets,” said Saul. “But if they don’t, then they most often elect to play on the second starting day and treat it like any other tournament. That being said, those players are at a disadvantage. Anytime you are offered a chance to increase your equity and you don’t take it, you are basically throwing money away.”

But does another chance at the tournament really offer an advantage? After all, these players who re-enter are paying twice as much for a shot at the same first-place prize. “I’m a big fan of re-entry tournaments because it allows me to gamble a little more on my first try,” said six-time WPT final tablist Kathy Liebert. “If I go bust it’s not a big deal because I’ll have another shot, but if I can get hold of a bunch of chips, I’ll be that much more dangerous in the next stage of the tournament. Frankly, I don’t buy the fact that the casual player, or satellite winner, is hurt by re-entries. If anything, they’ll benefit from players like me who are more likely to spew chips away by gambling.”

Tony Dunst, host of the WPT’s The Raw Deal, echoed Liebert’s opinion, stating that although the casinos are profiting from a re-entry, the player is coming out ah

Sweden’s Viktor ‘Isildur1’ Blom extended his overnight lead in his latest PokerStars SuperStar Showdown with Isaac ‘philivey2694’ Haxton to now have $281,365 of the American’s original $500,000 bankroll.

Saturday’s first four-hour session of the $1 million clash – which features blinds at $200 and $400 for the No-Limit Hold’em match-up – saw the Scandinavian high stakes online poker specialist collect $198,438 of New Yorker Haxton’s stack – and Blom continued with his dominance yesterday to up that by another $82,927.

Incredibly, within the first 60 minutes of day two, Team PokerStars Pro Blom had zoomed up to $331,294 in profit to leave Haxton with just over one buy-in for each of the tables they were playing.

But all that changed in the second 60 minutes as Haxton won a huge coin-flip, before taking down another massive pot to cut Blom’s advantage to $116,850. The American eventually chopped that lead down even further to just $39,856 by hand 3,000 during the third hour of play yesterday.

As the poker world gets ready to mark the 1-year anniversary of Black Friday later this month, it appears that online poker has changed for the better—at least at one US-friendly online poker site. Americas Cardoom's Liberty Weekends promotion is proving to be an incredible success, with hundreds of poker players joining the tables for the kickoff weekend of the $500,000 series.

Last Saturday, Americas Cardroom kicked off Liberty Weekends, five weekends of online poker tournaments featuring half-a-million dollars in guaranteed prize pools. The inaugural event, a $10,000 Guaranteed, saw its prize pool propped up to $13,400 thanks to the 140 players who registered for the tournament. Online poker player alamutt1 took first place for $3,082.

The $50k on Sunday was equally impressive with a field of 178 battling for the $50,000 Guaranteed prize pool. Online poker player nowitsover ended the game as the last man standing for $11,250.

To accommodate even more poker players, the Sunday tournaments have been pushed back by an hour. The No Limit Hold'em online poker tournaments will now get underway at 7:00 p.m. ET. The $50k Guarantees will also award 1,000 points in this month's $60k Points Race, while the $10k tournaments at 9:00pm ET on Saturdays will award 200 points in the $60k Points Race.

Liberty Weekends reach their highpoint in a $250,000 Guaranteed poker tournament on April 15th at 7:00 p.m. ET, the anniversary of Black Friday. Online poker players can win their seat right now through a satellite, or buy directly in. The $250k will award 7,500 points in April's $60k Points Race.

For those who are all about waiting until the last minute, Americas Cardroom is holding a 250-Seat Super Satellite on April 13th for the Liberty Quarter Million. All players who enter the satellite will earn 1,000 points for April's Points Race.
