More bracelets likely mean more of the biggest names in the game are going to make their way, despite competing events like the English Poker Open running concurrently. Very little in the poker world matches the prestige of a WSOP bracelet, whether it's earned in Las Vegas or London. The first match is the £2,500 Six-Handed No Limit Hold 'Em tournament that runs from today through Thursday, September 16.
After that, Event #2, the £5,000 Pot Limit Omaha event goes from Thursday through Saturday. Event #3, the £1,000 No Limit Hold 'Em tournament runs from Friday, September 17 through Tuesday, September 21st. High rollers are going to want to seek out the £10,000 Not Limit Hold "em Heads-Up tournament that runs from Tuesday, September 21st through Thursday, September 23rd. Finally, the World Series of Poker Europe Championship Main Event goes down Thursday, September 23rd through Tuesday, September 27th. It's a £10,000 No Limit Hold 'Em tourney that's sure to feature some of the best poker action you can find.
The total prize pool for the English Poker Open was £675,500 with the top 18 players heating paid. The biggest names in the bubble were Liv Boeree, who finished 12th and Phil Laak, who barely cashed in 18th place. The rest of the final table was as follows:
Sebastian Crul — £129,000
Mathew Frankland — £77,400
Felipe Ramos — £54,300
Andrew Brennan — £40,750
Brent Lehring — £30,550
Mark Norman — £23,750
Salman Behbehani — £17,000
Stephen Chimelski — £13,600
The final hand between Crul and Quoss was fairly sedate, especially for the money in play by that point. They both went all-in pre-flop, Quoss holding A-Q and Crul holding A-5 suited. An ace hit the board, giving both a pair of aces, but Quoss had the critical Queen kicker and the rest of the board left both players exactly where they were when it started.
The Top Six Finishers
Phil Laak £170,802
Andrew Pantling £105,506
Chris Bjorin £70,473
David Peters £48,202
Ilan Rouah £33,617
Willie Tann £23.900

While many of the world's biggest players are in London for the WSOPE, there's still quite a few recognizable names in this year's docket: Kathy Lieber, Jonathan Little and Jerry Yang were all seen at the tables on Sunday. A good deal of the Borgata's success this year may stem from the reduced buy-in of $3,500 versus the $10,000 standard that has been the norm for the WPT.
Day 2 of Borgata will see 641 survivors duking it out. Right now, the chip leader is Vincenzo Abate, who is the only player so far to cross the 200,000 chip mark this early in the tournament. Day 2 starts at 11AM Eastern today and will continue for eight levels.

You may think your opponent has the brain of a monkey, but it turns out that capuchins recognize the value of poker chips. A study at Italy's Institute of Cognitive Sciences and Technologies used poker chips as part of a group of items that served as tokens for food. Monkeys were to select a smaller quantity of items (like chips) to receive a larger reward. They soon figured out, though, that big piles of items meant less food and learned to use smaller amounts of the chips and other items strategically.
There's probably a lesson there for many players about small bets building to a bigger bankroll, but I'm too busy looking at pictures of monkeys on the internet to figure it out.

Tribal police at the Mowhawk reservation in northern New York state arrested Anthony Laughing of Massena for running an illegal poker room. Gambling is legal on the reservation, but only at the Akwesasne Casino. However, let's not think these guys were Serpico or anything: Laughing was running the poker room from a place called the All-In Lounge.

The World Poker Tour's website described the scene after his victory: "Pilgrim runs off the stage, drops to his knees near Mike Sexton and Vince Van Patten, and then falls to the floor face down – we think he is crying with joy. After about two minutes, Pilgrim slowly stands up and wipes tears from his eyes as the audience gives him a standing ovation." Even Pilgrim's final opponent, Kia Mohajeri joined in on the applause. Here's how the final dollar amounts shook down:
1. Dwyte Pilgrim – $733,802
2. Kia Mohajeri – $440,945
3. Ofir Mor – $266,835
4. Brandon Novena – $223,475
5. Daniel Makowsky – $183,449
6. Ben Klier – $148,427
Some people took exception to Pilgrim's boasting and occasional shots at his opponents. He's been quoted as saying "I don’t care what happens. I showed these guys how to play from beginning to end," and after taking the chip lead, he mocked Mohajeri by saying “Gracie Jujitsu! Think I don’t know where I’m at? Think I don’t understand every facet of this game?” Apparently, MMA has something to do with the fact he spiked a king on the river against a failed flush draw, but we're still puzzling it out.

When you guys multi-table 8 and up tables, do you actually have time to keep up with every player, or do you basically just make automated decisions the way that I do. I am doing very well at my current stakes, but i would imagine that when I move up I will be forced to play less tables.
Thanks
One state where the entertainment activity is absolutely illegal is Washington. A state Supreme Court ruling recently claimed that a law that was enacted in Washington making online gambling a Class C felony, was not unconstitutional. The law had been challenged by the Poker Players Alliance.
PokerStars soon after sent a letter to all of their customers in Washington, explaining that they no longer could continue to allow them to play at the online poker room for real money. It was a blow to thousands of players who enjoy online poker in the state.
With the country's lawmakers divided on the issue of online gambling, the Washington ruling and subsequent PokerStars pull out of the state, could have widespread ramifications. Those seeking to criminalize online gambling could see the Washington ruling as an opening to create such laws in their own states.
Legislators, however, that favor online gambling, such as Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in California, may push to regulate online poker before any restricting laws are enacted. California, Florida, and New Jersey are three states where online gambling regulations have been discussed by lawmakers.
On a national level, online poker players have become impatient with the slow pace with which pro-online gambling legislators have been moving to change the current laws in recent years. A bi-partisan bill that would lay the foundation for regulated Internet gambling industry in the US has made it out of the House Financial Services Committee, but the bill has stalled and will likely not be discussed further before the November mid-term elections.

Niall Farrel's the chip leader going into Day 2, who upped his 15,000 starting stack by over 400%, ending the first eight blind levels with 86,500. Special notice should be paid to Liverpool British Masters champ Mark McClusky; he had a minor infection that spread to his heart but that didn't stop him from making an appearance after he won his qualifying seat online.
Day 1B is underway as we speak and even more pros and wannabes are going to work their way up to Day 2's festivities. Last year's winner, David La Ronde, earned nearly a quarter of a million pounds for beating 213 players and while this year's field may be smaller, the action is certainly just as hot.
