The Bicycle Casino in Bell Gardens (near Los Angeles, CA) was the scene of a rather unfortunate incident on Sunday evening Mesbah Khaffaji, a 52-year-old poker player, was playing at a no-limit Hold 'Em poker table when he apparently lost a hand, his patience and some would say his sanity. Khaffaji threw his cards down on the table, stood up, and spit a mouthful of food into the dealer's face, covering his glasses and causing casino security to take him into custody.

Khaffaji was detained by casino security until about 7pm, when the police arrived and arrested him on suspicion of misdemeanor battery. Brendan Kirkpatrick of the Bell Gardens Police Department had this to say about what incited the incident: "We can only assume [this happened] because he lost a hand."

Kirkpatrick also said that this wasn't the first time a player had vented their frustrations at the table, placing a dealer in the line of fire. "Is it often? No. Does it happen? Yes. People get heated. Large sums of money lost; people can’t control their emotions." Khaffajji was later released from custody on $20,000 bail.

That was nice. that sounds alot like my research paper for my comp II class. It is all about personal freedom and the right to spend my paycheck as i see fit. If people can't handle the freedom they shouldn't play. those are the protections mr. pappas was addressing. we need to definitely stand for out right to play games of skill in our own home.

Wellesley College visiting researcher Dr. Erik Schlicht has been studying the way that people make decisions under pressure and he's been using poker as the playing field of choice. According to this research, the worst face to use at a live poker table is the typical "poker face," but oddly, Schlicht used a computer to make this decision.

"What we wanted to look at was the way people behaved in situations where there is a risky decision to make," Schlicht told the Boston Globe. "Traditionally, researchers do this by simulating wagers or lotteries. But I thought if we could use a scenario people were more likely to encounter in their daily life, like playing poker, we could get a sense of how people respond to biological cues, not just the abstract."

Schlict and his team of researchers used a computer that displayed facial expressions while wagering against players. Players were then told that they could either call or fold based on the wager and the facial expression displayed. When the computer displayed a more trustworthy face, players were more likely to fold. The traditional "poker face" was shown to be an incentive to call on the part of participants.

Schlicht cautioned people that this research covers specific moments only and can't be applied to a long-term strategy. He told the Globe: "You might be able to fool someone for a few hands, but probably not much longer."

The Reno Journal Gazette profiled local opthamologist and poker player Steve Friedlander in a piece that explored the dual life he's leading. A respected eye specialist with thriving practice, Dr. Friedlander's record as an amateur is impressive. He finished sixth in the Aussie Millions poker tournament, winning a quarter of a million dollars in the main event. He became a bit of a viral video sensation when a YouTube video featuring his losing a hand to 96-year-old Jack Uri. He's won second place at one of the Bellagio's weekly tournaments, pocketing $24,980 for his efforts. He's a fixture at local poker tournaments.

While other players would take flying halfway around the world and taking home $330,000 from two tournaments at an event they'd entered on a whim as a sign that they should go pro, Dr. Friedlander is dedicated to maintaining a balance in his life. After winning hundreds of thousands of dollars in the Aussie Millions, he told a commentator that he had to hurry up and get ready to fly back to Reno — he had patients waiting for him. He told the Gazette:

"I'm always going to be an amateur poker player because I am a professional physician," he said.

"Unless I quit this job, I'll never be at the level pro poker players are at. However, I am starting to get to the point where I see more and more things at the poker table "» things that I haven't been able to do in years past. All of it came together for me in the run I had down there."

Texas Holdem is by far the most common for of poker played today due to is popularity there are even several TV shows of the game. Besides being popular texas Holdem is also the best game for a beginner to learn, the game can be learned after a few minutes and afte just a few hours of practice you can be playing fairly well against other beginners, but to really get good you must play often.

Texas Holdem is played the same way in the casino, online casinos and in your home with your pals.

Texas Holdem is played in the following manner:
1. Betting structures can vary. In Texas Holdem rarely are antes used. Most Texas Holdem games start with first two players on the dealers left placing predetermined bets. These players are called the small and large blind, and their bets are called posting the blinds.

2. Each player receives 2 cards face down. These cards are called you pocket cards and they are the only cards that are unique to you.

3. After each player is dealt their hole cards a round of betting takes place starting with the player to the left of the 2 blinds this round of betting is called the pre-flop. Just like in any other poker game a player can call raise of fold during their turn.

4. After the Pre-Flop round is over the dealer will remove the top card from the deck and discard it, this is called the Burn Card. This is done to make sure that no cheating is done. The dealer will then turn over 3 cards in the center of the table. This round is called the Flop. Any player may use any of these cards to make the best 5 card hand possible, but you are not allowed to actually touch the cards, each player can use the same cards if it help them, this is why your hole cards are so important.

5. As with the pre-flop there is now another round of betting, it is at this point you will start to see players folding.

6. After the betting is over, the dealer will burn another card, then deal the fourth of the communal cards. This card is called the Turn card

7. Again another round of betting begins and now is when you will start to see the size of the pot really grow.

8. One last time the dealer burns the top card before turning over the last card of the game, called the River card. Players now have all 5 of the communal cards and their own hole card to make the best 5 card hand.

9. One last chance is given to raise the bets or get out of the game. After this each player still in the game will show their cards. This is called the Showdown. The player with the best hand is declared the winner and wins the pot.

Now that you know the basic order of the game you are ready to start playing Texas Holdem. Holdem is a simple game to learn but if hard to master. This is the part that will take you many hand and many dollars, but if you put in the time you will be rewarded for it.

Andy Frankenberger has won this year's World Poker Tour Legends Of Poker tournament. The New York stock trader took the top spot in this year's event, winning $750,000 for first place in the process, along with some serious bragging rights. Frankenberger went into the final table with a serious chip lead, but things weren't looking so good for a little while. The amateur prevailed, however, getting his stack rebuilt in fairly short order and going after the rest of the pack aggressively.

The final hand of the event pitted Frankenberger against Kyle Wilson, who moved all-in for 2,650,000. Frankenberger called and showed Ac9c; Wilson was holding Ad3d. The flop came down 9d7d5c, the turn was a Jh and the river was 6c, leaving Frankenberger with a pair of nines and the Legends Of Poker bragging rights for the next year. In addition to a hefty cash prize, Frankenberger also gets a special WPT bracelet, a trophy of Poker Hall of Famer Wild Bill Hickok and entry into the WPT World Championship at the Bellagio.
