As one of them faces a tough fight for reelection and the other seeks to keep his highly prestigious seat as the Majority Leader, the dueling members of the Senate representing the state of Nevada continue to battle over the regulation and legalization of online poker, both publicly and privately.
The two men, current Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and junior Senator Dean Heller, have gone back to the Silver State with the close of the most recent session of the Senate, but that hasn’t calmed issues between the two men down on the key question of the regulation of the online poker industry. Sen. Reid, who negotiated a still-unintroduced bill with Arizona Senator Jon Kyl on that subject, tasked Sen. Heller with garnering the necessary votes from fellow Republicans that would ensure passage of the bill. Earlier this month, Sen. Heller allegedly balked at the proposition prior to the fall recess, bringing the ire of Sen. Reid upon him last week.
In discussing the current stalemate, Sen. Reid’s office accused Sen. Heller of not stepping up for his constituency in Nevada as well as the multitude of gaming corporations who would benefit from federal regulation. Calling regulation of online gaming and poker “the most important issue facing Nevada since Yucca Mountain (a reference to the stoppage of a proposed nuclear waste repository in the state),” Sen. Reid chastised Sen. Heller for not supporting the issue wholeheartedly. Sen. Heller, for his part, countered by stating in a letter that the issue was best left to the House of Representatives to take first action rather than the Senate.
Yesterday, Sen. Heller issued another salvo in the ongoing battle by saying that Sen. Reid was attempting to make a political issue out of the online poker fight. According to the Nevada Appeal, Sen. Heller stated that the legislation should be removed from the “partisan fights” between the two men so that it doesn’t “poison the waters” for passage later this year.

PokerStars, the biggest online poker room in the world, announced that it will refund all the international poker players of Full Tilt Poker and that it will re-launch Full Tilt Poker for the European market early in November. PokerStars has initiated several procedures to help Full Tilt Poker’s non US players to withdraw their funds. PokerStars says that Full Tilt Poker’s old customers in Estonia, Belgium, France, Spain, and Denmark will have to pair their old Full Tilt Poker account with a new PokerStars account so that they can either withdraw their funds or use them on PokerStars.

Although Rafael Nadal could not take part in the US Open in New York and Summer Olympics in London owing to chronic knee problems, he got a receptionist’s job at the Vall D’Or Golf Country Club on Majorca Island. This temporary post is part of the marketing agreement he recently signed with PokerStars-com, which runs the biggest online poker tournament in the world. This week, PokerStars marked the end of a 22-day series of online poker events, which had an enormous prize pool of over $55.5 million and a field of 126,000 players. Needless to say, US players are not allowed to take part in this event because of the unfriendly poker laws in the country.

Cross the old, tired Mercier Bridge from downtown to the south shore and there it is — poker heaven.
It might not look celestial, this strip of sagging tobacco shacks and convenience stores, but almost 24/7 there is poker — Texas Hold ’em to be exact — plus free food and booze delivered to your table by pretty girls.
The stakes are low, the energy is friendly and it’s the only place to play poker legally, outside the bedlam of a casino or your friend’s basement, for hundreds of kilometres.
There are four poker clubs on Highway 138, which cuts through the Kahnawake reserve — or community, as the Mohawks prefer to call it — heading to the bedroom communities of Chateauguay, Delson, St. Constant and St. Catherine, south of Montreal.
The card-playing emporiums have become a growth industry in this reserve known for the 1990 Oka crisis.
At Snake’s Poker, Vegas glitz is in short supply.
The music is Motown, the women serving the steaks and burgers keep their shirts modestly buttoned and, under the soft lighting, men and a few women are scattered around 11 tables playing what can best be described as working-man’s poker.
As in most Kahnawake poker rooms, the games are designed to make sure you still have your shirt when you leave — that you’ll return to play another day.
A typical tournament will cost $75. The house will keep $10, give you cut-rate food and drink, and as many as 30,000 valueless chips. A decent player can play for hours and the pot — $6,500 if 100 players each throw in $65 — is carved up between a few winners.

PokerScout-com is an online poker information site that keeps the poker community up to date with all the latest information on our favorite poker rooms including the traffic rankings. PokerNews has reported that Poker Scout has released their weekly rankings and PokerStars is still on top, as always, but things may get interesting as Full Tilt Poker is relaunched in the next few months.
Poker Scout reported an overall drop of 1.4 percent in poker traffic which makes this the second straight week that online poker has seen a decline in numbers. PokerStars remains the top spot at 22,000 for a 7 day average and the iPoker Network and PartyPoker continue to compete for the second place slot. PokerNews pointed out that Full Tilt Poker ranked second in poker traffic rankings before they shut down so once the site is back up and running, a significant shift should be seen in the traffic rankings.
This week, the Ongame Network was able to move from seventh place to fifth place, which is quite an improvement. PokerStars.it and Winamax.fr were forced down to sixth and seventh place respectively, while, Revolution Gaming was on the board but have now reached the bubble and missed the top ten list.
Below is a report of the poker traffic rankings for the top ten rooms:
Rank Site 7-Day Average (Real-money ring players)
1 PokerStars 22,000
2 iPoker 2,800
3 PartyPoker 2,700
4 888Poker 2,050
5 Ongame Network 1,640
6 PokerStars.it 1,600

The sound of football referee whistles are blaring loudly and I haven’t even sipped my first warmth of coffee yet…wake me Toto, click my heals and I’ll be back in Kansas! As you can tell I am not in my usual setting of nature and tranquility as we are staying with family for a quick visit abroad.
Sundays, I am told are a huge football day in the states, with rituals I do not comprehend fully, but find rather interesting when it comes to feeding my hunger for understanding the nature of creatures of habits.
As I sit typing away on my trusty little keyboard tucked away in a room unfamiliar to my senses I realize the show must go on, so guys and dolls here is your latest edition of CS Reports Weekly Recap of online gambling news, reviews and previews!
This week Bally’s Technologies signed an agreement to provide online casino and skill games developer GameAccount Network a large selection of online and mobile gaming content. Bally Technologies’ Vice President of Business Development John Connelly announced, “We are very pleased to reach this agreement with GameAccount.” Bally offers its online content through a Remote Gaming Server. Customers can access the entire library of content, and because of the limited infrastructure needed, an easy, one-time integration to existing platforms is achievable. The Company plans to offer a continuous flow of new online and mobile titles.
PokerStars is in the midst of becoming embroiled in patent battles over the Rush Poker copycat case, Paul Telford, general counsel for the poker room stated,
“Together with our patent attorneys, we are undertaking a full analysis of the Rush patent applications we have acquired. “When the time is right, it is our intention to use these patents to protect the inventive elements of the Rush and Zoom products. “As part of that exercise we will be closely studying similar products that have been introduced by our competitors to ascertain where possible infringement claims lie.”
PokerStars also has confirmed that Full Tilt Poker will relaunch in the first week of November, and has detailed the repayment plans for players with money on the site.

Federal legalization of Internet poker didn't garner a mention during Thursday's hourlong televised debate in Nevada's U.S. Senate race.
The omission wasn't surprising.
Both Republican Sen. Dean Heller and Democratic Rep. Shelley Berkley support efforts to legalize, regulate and tax Internet poker on a federal level.
Even John Pappas, executive director of the Washington D.C.-based Poker Players Alliance, the advocacy group pushing for Internet poker legalization, isn't concerned that the issue lacks prominence during the current election cycle.
"We're realistic," Pappas said. "There are obviously much bigger issues facing the American electorate."
It's unclear what impact poker players could have on the election.
However, a candidate's stance on online poker legalization could be enough to swing the voting bloc.
The Poker Players Alliance has more than 1.2 million members. Pappas said a national survey taken of the group found almost two-thirds of poker players would cross party lines to vote for a candidate who supports Internet poker legalization.
The Republican and Democratic parties missed a golden opportunity to reach those voters during the national political conventions.
Republicans folded on the issue when the party's platform called for an all-out prohibition on Internet gambling of any kind.
The Democrats equally mucked their hand. The party ignored the words "poker" and "gaming" in a platform that supported increased expansion and use of the Internet.
In reality, party platforms are meaningless. But the language provided insight into where Internet poker legalization ranks in the national debate.

With billions of dollars at stake, the head of the gambling industry's main lobbying group sounded a pessimistic note Tuesday about the prospect of Congress passing Internet regulatory laws this year.
American Gaming Association chief Frank Fahrenkopf Jr. cast online wagering hosted by sites overseas as "the next frontier of our business," and one of the biggest threats to the casino industry in the United States.
But Fahrenkopf told reporters in Las Vegas that passing a measure such as one backed by Senate Democratic Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada and Republican Sen. Jon Kyl of Arizona would need quick action during the post-election congressional session.
"We will need plenty of hard work and a little gambler's luck to see a federal bill pass this year," Fahrenkopf said during his annual state-of-the-industry media briefing at the Global Gaming Expo. "Obviously, nothing is going to happen before the election. That means a lame duck (session) is our last chance."
Fahrenkopf, a former Republican party national chairman, said about 85 countries have legalized online gambling, and some estimates say almost $35 billion is being bet worldwide online each year, including millions by people in the U.S.

Passage of federal Internet poker legislation during Congress' upcoming lame duck session will "take a little bit of gamblers luck," the casino industry's chief Washington, D.C., lobbyist said Tuesday in Las Vegas.
American Gaming Association President Frank Fahrenkopf Jr. said legalizing Internet poker in the U.S. continues to be an overriding issue for the casino industry, which officially kicked off the Global Gaming Expo at the Sands Expo and Convention Center. The four-day conference and trade show is the industry's largest annual meeting.
Fahrenkopf, whose organization co-produces G2E with Reed Exhibitions, said Internet poker legalization is the most talked about subject among the gaming community. Most of the major casino companies and gaming equipment manufacturers have taken initial steps to jump into a legalized American Internet poker market.
G2E held a special one-day conference Monday devoted to Internet gaming.
A bill sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and Sen. John Kyl, R-Ariz., has been bottled up in Congress since it was first proposed during the 2010 lame duck session.
A summary of the proposed legislation, which would set up a structure for regulating and taxing Internet poker on federal level, floated through the Washington, D.C., and poker media last month.

A Las Vegas man who worked for online poker companies was sentenced to five months in prison for helping deceive banks into processing hundreds of millions of dollars in illegal gambling transactions. Chad Elie, 32, was one of 11 people charged in an April 2011 indictment targeting the founders of PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker and Absolute Poker. U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan sentenced Elie today in federal court in Manhattan, saying the defendant “really didn’t care whether what he was doing was legal.”
“He was in a sense playing a game with the government, a catch-me-if-you-can kind of game,” Kaplan said today about Elie. “That just can’t be overlooked.”
Prosecutors allege that after the U.S. implemented the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act in 2006, which barred banks from processing payments to offshore gambling websites, the three companies worked around the ban to continue operating in the U.S.
Elie pleaded guilty to conspiracy in March, admitting that he served as a “payment processor” for the poker companies and lied to U.S. banks about the nature of the financial transactions they were processing.
A lawyer for Elie, Barry Berke, asked that his client be sentenced to six months of home confinement, two years of probation and community service, arguing that he has accepted responsibility for his actions.

“He was in a sense playing a game with the government, a catch-me-if-you-can kind of game,” Kaplan said today about Elie. “That just can’t be overlooked.”

The USA doesn’t like fraudsters and has no tolerance for those cheats who violate federal laws regarding online gambling. Black Friday as it has come to been known as in the online poker industry in the USA is showing the results of the indictments handed down on April 13th 2011. The sentencing of various money processors over the last little while has shown the Department of Justice is serious and will not allow illegal money laundering in the USA.
Absolute Poker founder Brent Beckley received a 14-month sentence while fellow payment processor Ira Rubin was hit with a three-year sentence shortly after Beckley got his notice to reside behind bars.
Now Chad Elie, has been sentenced to five months in prison for his involvement in processing millions of dollars in gambling transactions for the Absolute Poker, Full Tilt Poker and Poker Stars operations. U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan said that Elie was a defendant with no defence and he said Elie didn’t care if he was breaking Federal Laws and that Elie deserved time in prison. Judge Kaplan was quoted in Business Week as saying, “He was in a sense playing a game with the government, a catch-me-if-you-can kind of game,” The judge described Elie’s illegal actions as a “reckless spitting in the eye of the government and the laws of the United States” when it came to operating online poker sites serving the United States.” Adding, “That just can’t be overlooked.” Elie pled guilty to conspiracy while working around the law to continue processing payments and deceiving US banks regarding the kind of financial transactions he was making for the online poker companies mentioned.
In addition to the five-month prison sentence, Elie was also ordered by Judge Kaplan to serve two years of probation and to forfeit $500,000 that he earned making illegal transactions for the three poker firms. Nelson Burtnick the former Full Tilt Poker payment man pled guilty to conspiracy and gambling charges and will be sentenced December 19th 2012.

Anti-gambling forces called on U.S. Rep. Joe Barton Thursday to throw in the cards on his plan to legalize online poker.
Opponents of the proposal fear that Barton's controversial bill -- which has lingered in the U.S. House for more than a year -- may find movement now that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has sought to push the measure forward in the waning days of this congressional session.
And they worry that legalizing online poker could lead to further expansion of gambling in Texas.
"We see this bill as the camel's nose under the tent -- a beginning point for gambling online," said Jack Ballou, a board member of the anti-gambling Stop Predatory Gambling-Texas group and an Arlington resident. "As a constituent, ... [I'm] calling on congressman Barton to withdraw support of that bill and discontinue pushing it in Congress."
Barton, R-Ennis, said earlier this year that even though time is running out in this session, he's still talking to colleagues, hoping to legalize the estimated $6 billion online poker industry by creating interstate licensing.
"Poker isn't predatory gambling -- it's the All American game and Texas hold 'em is a natural for Texans to play," Barton said. "In fact, I learned to play in Boy Scouts. It is a game of skill, not one of chance."
Barton's proposal has drawn a variety of sponsors from both parties as well as support from the poker-playing industry.
Recently, Reid has talked about a bill that would ban all types of online gambling except Internet poker. His proposal would also let state and tribal lotteries sell online tickets -- something else gambling critics oppose.
The Stop Predatory Gambling-Texas group sent Barton a letter this week asking him to back off the bill.

The move in the halls of Congress for the federal regulation of online poker has its opponents. Indian gaming officials aren’t happy with it, as are individual Senators and Representatives on both sides of the aisle for a variety of reasons. According to a report from Washington, D. C., there’s new opposition that could be facing the proposal for regulation if it comes to a vote before the end of the current Congress.
According to Kevin Bogardus on TheHill-com, the push by Nevada Senator Harry Reid to pass his compromise bill (co-authored with retiring Arizona Senator Jon Kyl) is facing stiff challenges from the individual state legislatures and their governors. Following the move in December 2011 by the U. S. Department of Justice that stated the Wire Act of 1961 applied only to sports betting, several states read this as indicating that they were free to be able to open up their own online gaming outlets, mostly focused on lottery ticket sales. The Reid/Kyl proposal, according to Bogardus, is upsetting state governments because of its pre-emptive strike on the individual states’ movement towards legalization of that and other forms of online gaming.
The proposed Reid/Kyl bill, which would open a regulated poker market in the United States, has provisions in it that would essentially shut down any other form of gaming in the country. If the Reid/Kyl bill is passed (as well as the bill from Texas Representative Joe Barton on the subject in the House), it is consolidated with the House bill and signed into law, it would place restrictions on what the states could do with online gaming. Under the Reid/Kyl proposed bill, online gaming – whether intra- or inter-state – would be prohibited except for horse racing and online poker, both of which would have federal regulations to cover their activities.
These two points are what seems to have raised the ire of the different state legislatures, governors and lobbyists for some forms of online gaming. Bogardus quotes Margaret DeFrancisco, the co-chairwoman of the North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries (NASPL), as saying, “It’s (lottery ticket sales) all the money that the states absolutely rely on. (Online) is another sales channel. We don’t want to be restricted by the federal government telling us what gaming policy should be in the States.”
The discussion of the impact on the states comes as the head of the American Gaming Association, Frank Fahrenkopf, spoke at the Global Gaming Expo going on at the Sands Expo and Convention Center in Las Vegas. Speaking to the gathering yesterday, Fahrenkopf stated that passage of any regulation of online poker during the post-election “lame duck” session will “take a bit of gambler’s luck.” Although the AGA is behind federal regulation of online poker, Fahrenkopf also expressed that he wasn’t happy with the current version.

A front-running performance at the 2012 World Series of Poker Europe, held at the Hotel Majestic Barriere in Cannes, France, saw Phil Hellmuth defeat Sergii Baranov to capture the title and the event’s €1,022,376 first-place prize.
Baranov, from Ukraine, settled for €632,592, with France’s Stephane Albertini finishing third for €423,360 and Joseph “subiime” Cheong taking fourth for €292,320.
The event, the seventh and final of the 2012 WSOPE, drew 420 entrants and offered a total purse of €4,032,000.
With the win, Hellmuth set or extended several personal milestones. The 13th career bracelet put him three clear of Doyle Brunson and Johnny Chan, who have won 10 each, and was the second bracelet of the calendar year for Hellmuth, matching the feat of Antonio Esfandiari to become the only double bracelet winners of 2012.
Hellmuth also became the first person to win the main events of both the traditional WSOP (back in 1989) and its newer European version, and also extended his career mark of WSOP cashes to 95 with the win.
Hellmuth also recaptured the lead in the 2012 WSOP Player of the Year points race, with “October Nine” finalist Greg Merson now needing to win the title to take that honor away from Hellmuth.
Hellmuth entered the final table of eight players with a narrow chip lead over Baranov and held that lead through much of the finale’s action, eventually reaching heads-up play with a 3:1 edge.
The final hand of the tournament found Baranov all in with A-4 to Hellmuth’s A-10, with Hellmuth able to fade the three-outer to seal the victory.
Hellmuth employed a more loose and aggressive style in this tourney than in his earlier wins, and duly noted it, with his customary lack of modesty, in post-tourney comments. “I played the best poker of my life in this tournament,” Hellmuth told the WSOP’s Nolan Dalla. “My game is constantly evolving. I tried some new things out that really worked this time. My game is never the same. You’ve got to constantly be improving, and that’s what I do.”

Thursday marks the start of the European Short-Handed Champonships, a €550 buy-in tournament that is being held in The Regency Hotel, Dublin. The Main Event will span three days of play thanks to each player starting with a generous stack of 20,000 chips and a 60-minute clock being employed throughout.
Last year's main event attracted a massive crowd of 657 players who were eventually outlasted by Liverpool's Steven King. King walked away with €63,000 for his efforts and this year's champion could leave Dublin with an even larger prize as Day 1b has completely sold out; please bear that in mind if you were planning to choose Friday as your starting day.
Although most will see Thursday as being the start of the European Short-Handed Championships, there is actually a tournament taking place tonight at 20:00. There will be a €60 Super Satellite to the Main Event running that will allow one rebuy and one addon (or two rebuys) priced at €50 each. One seat to Day 1a of the Main Event will be awarded for every €550 in the prize pool.
