Antonio Esfandiari has made world history by winning the biggest ever poker payout of $18.3 million in a charity poker event hosted by the World Series of Poker. Forty-eight players paid a total of $1 million each to participate in the prestigious game. The three day tournament was in aid of the non-profit organization One Drop that fights poverty through access to clean water and was held at the Rio All-Suite & Hotel in Las Vegas.
The Winners
The 33 year old poker tournament winner, businessman Esfandiari from the US beat British pro player Sam Trickett who still walked away with $10.1 million. The third place David Einhorn walked away with a very respectable $4.35 million. The Greenlight Capital Inc co-founder has pledged to give his winnings away to charity. The top finalists also walked away with $1.2 a piece.
New Record
Esfandiari's unbelievable win smashes the existing record of $12 million won by Jamie Gold in the 2006 no-limit Texas hold'em at a previous World Series of Poker tournament. Upon winning, Esfandiari stated "I just know I was going to win."

Last week, in a significant step towards making online poker a reality, the Nevada Gaming Commission issued two licenses for online betting. Las Vegas based Bally Technologies Inc. and Reno, Nev. based International Game Technology both received approvals from the Nevada Gaming Control Board (NGC😎. According to Michael Lawton, a senior research analyst with the NGCB, both companies must now get their systems approved by independent testing laboratories before they can begin operating.
The firms must also wait for the state of Nevada to allow casino operators to provide online gaming to Nevada residents. However, it is expected that they begin operating very quickly after this as both firms run successful operations in Europe.
These two approvals have paved the way for the U.S. casino industry to expand into the online market. Researchers H2 Gambling Capital believes that the market may be worth $13.4 billion in just five years.

It’s been well over 14 months since online poker was banned in the United States. Dubbed by many in the business as Black Friday, April 15, 2011 was the day the four biggest online poker sites (Absolute Poker, Full Tilt Poker, Poker Stars and Ultimate Bet) were shut down following charges of money laundering, illegal gambling and bank fraud by the U.S. Department of Justice.

Microgaming has commented once again on the 5050 Poker claims, the online poker rooms license was suspended last month after concerns of “material breach;” it was reported that the poker room was in liquidation and players still had not been paid.
5050 Poker room explained that, “The operational costs of 5050 Poker Ltd has for a long time exceeded the revenues, resulting in players’ funds being used in the operations of the company,” adding that “This has been enhanced by the fact that Microgaming, has been fining 5050 Poker Ltd. In excess of € 150.000, that incorrectly has been withdrawn from the players’ accounts.”

Strip poker is one of Attorney General Eric Holder’s favorite games. As in, he evidently enjoys stripping online poker entrepreneurs of their Fourth Amendment rights.
Holder is the head of the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), which is currently stripping online gaming entrepreneurs of their intellectual property rights. Technically, online gambling has never been declared “illegal” in the U.S. and yet the DOJ is citing a hazy law in order to allege that online gambling is a crime.

PokerStars likes to try new things. Earlier this year, they offered up the first MicroMillions series of online poker tournaments. There were 100 events with very low buy-ins, making the action accessible to all players of all bankrolls. It was such a hit that PokerStars is preparing to do it again.
MicroMillions II is set to kick off this week, on Thursday, July 12. Multiple tournament offerings each day include everything from No Limit Hold'em to Pot Limit Omaha, with many other variations scattered about. And buy-ins range from $.11 for Event 1 to $22 for the Main Event. Satellites are already running around the clock, so there's no excuse not to take a shot and play for a MicroMillions seat and one of those coveted titles!

The Grosvenor UK Poker Tour (GUKPT) stopped off in Plymouth last week for the seventh stop of this season's tour but it was the weekend's Main Event that really stirred up the most excitement amongst the tour's regular players and the poker loving locals.
The £500 No Limit Hold'em freezeout saw players start with a huge stack containing 1,000 big blinds so it was no wonder it took over four and a half hours for the tournament to lose its first player. From that point the field of 76 runners gradually decreased in size and the £38,000 prize pool was getting closer and close to being distributed.

The subject is dicey, the stakes are high and the clock is ticking, but lawmakers are still hopeful they can move to legalize online poker by the year's end.
"Internet poker isn't a crime, it is a game of skill and it shouldn't be outlawed," said Rep. Joe Barton, R-Texas.
His bill would establish a program overseen by the Department of Commerce for state licensing of internet poker. Barton says it gives states power to decide whether or not to allow internet poker within their borders and a share of any revenue generated.
Another bill make the Secretary of the Treasury responsible for the licensing of Internet gambling activities. Both bills are currently languishing in committee in the House.

The parliament in Cyprus has banned online casinos and exchange betting, meaning no more online poker for Cypriots. This bill has been a long time coming and was unanimously voted through.
According to the Cyprus Mail, the bill regulates gaming and legal betting and provides for a tax on net betting revenue (after winnings).

At 24 years old Nicholas Augustino has been playing poker for nearly a decade. The cash games specialist and T-shirt company owner first discovered online gambling and the game of poker when he was a 16-year old high school student, but it wasn’t poker that initially caught his eye. It was online sports betting.
“I had a buddy who put $50 on some online sports betting site. And through that site you could go and play online poker,” He said. “I’d put in $20 and lose it every time.”

Thanks to a healthy boost from the Big One For One Drop tournament, it looks like this year's World Series of Poker is going to make the history books as the richest poker tournament of all time with over $220,000,000 in prize money flowing into and out of the organization's coffers. All three starting flights for the Main Event, which were designated as Days 1A, 1B, and 1C are now complete and the final event is now going full steam ahead.
With an event as large as the WSOP and such an unpredictable, aggressive field in starting days of play, there were, of course, some notable casualties. Twelve-time gold bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth (the 1989 world champion), who was never able to gain any traction from the moment he took his seat at 4 pm on Saturday and busted out around 10PM on day 1A. Frank Kassela (the 2010 WSOP Player of the Year), Ray Romano and Kathy Liebert all joined him. Day 1B saw Scotty Nguyen, Todd Bruson, and Bertrand Grospellier among others hitting the rails. Day 1C witnessed 2010 champion Jonathan Duhamel busting out, along with Chris Moneymaker and Humberto Brenes among others.
Austria's William John is currently the overall chip leader with 266,700 chips, putting him far ahead of second place. The survivors from Day 1A and 1B will be playing in segregated groups today while Day 1C's survivors get a day off and return to play on Wednesday.
The Main Event Championship continues through July 16th. Once the final nine players are determined, they'll reconvene in late October at the Rio to finish this year's event.
