A bipartisan group of U.S. Senators is close to a deal on legalizing online poker, a possible victory for supporters of greater liberalization of gambling laws. But the group is also considering tightening restrictions on other forms of Internet gambling, which could affect the growth of social casino games.

Those on the industry side in the fight for online poker legislation in the United States have been doing pretty good for themselves lately as many pieces are moving into place for them. The only thing that needs to happen is for legislators to catch up to them and then we can finally get the real ball rolling.

Senators Harry Reid (D-NV) and Jon Kyl (R-AZ) have been working on a proposal to legalize online poker at the federal level, but lack support from GOP senators.
In the absence of federal legislation, Nevada has been making progress with its plans to roll out online poker sites later this year or in early 2013 on an intrastate platform due to the December ruling by the U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ) that found the 1961 Wire Act to be applicable to only sports betting. And with Delaware’s recent enactment of online gambling legislation and other state legislatures contemplating similar proposals, some federal lawmakers are afraid that a patchwork of state-by-state regulations will begin to complicate the issue.

There would be few things better for the poker community than a successful closure to the disaster that was once known as Full Tilt. A finale that would include the players getting all of their money back would not only be a large infusion of funds back into the player pool, but it would also bring a much more delightful atmosphere in poker rooms across our country. All of us in the poker world are of course cheering for some magic resolution of the Full Tilt Saga currently involving a PokerStars buyout of the company. Unfortunately I see one major hurdle that stops this idea from happening in the current political environment.

While our nation’s leaders discuss how they will fix our economy and grow jobs, it is infuriating to know that a Maryland native who recently won big in the 2012 World Series of Poker has been forced to live in Canada because of our government’s outlawing of online poker.

Churchill Downs Inc. is one of 30-plus companies to have submitted applications for an online poker license in Nevada, officials of the Nevada Gaming Control Board confirmed on Wednesday.
The application for an online poker license follows Churchill’s acquisition earlier this year of Bluff Media, a multimedia poker company that owns several undeveloped website domains. Churchill officials have said that they plan to explore opportunities in online gambling as they become available as the company seeks to diversify with businesses outside of racing.
The Nevada Gaming Control Board has already approved three applications for online poker from gambling companies.

The 6,598-strong starting field who sat down to compete in this year's World Series of Poker* Main Event has been whittled down to a final table of nine players. Eight Americans and one Hungarian pro are going to resume play on October 29th with the goal of winning the first prize of $8.5 million. The group features mostly unknown players with Andras Koroknai being perhaps the best known with his win in the 2010 LA Poker Classic.
The 2012 final table will be an all-male affair, which is surprising considering how close two women came to playing on the hallowed felt. Norway's Elisabeth Hille busted in 11th, losing a flip with AQs against Koroknai's pocket sevens. Goell Baumann ended up falling to the bubble, again eliminated by Koroknai after the French player took A9 against his AJ.
Greg Merson, who pocketed over a million dollars after winning the $10k six-max bracelet earlier in the series, nudged ahead of Phil Ivey in the WSOP player of the year standings. Merson, who's coming back in third place, is already guaranteed at least $754,798. That would take his 2012 WSOP earnings to almost $2m at a minimum.
The final table chip counts are as follows:
1 Jesse Sylvia (43,875,000)
2 Andras Koroknai (29,375,000)
3 Greg Merson (28,725,000)
4 Russell Thomas (24,800,000)
5 Steven Gee (16,860,000)
6 Michael Esposito (16,260,000)
7 Robert Salaburu (15,155,000)
8 Jacob Balsiger (13,115,000)
9 Jeremy Ausmus (9,805,000)
They'll all be coming back a week earlier than usual thanks to this year's presidential election, but they should all have plenty of time to get ready for their chance to win $8,527,982. Meanwhile, you can play for your own share of $100,000 guaranteed every week at Bovada's online poker tournaments

Under challenge to deliver Republican votes on a bill prized by most Nevada casinos, Sen. Dean Heller said Thursday he's doing his part to advance online poker legislation that advocates believe is a "must pass" through Congress by the end of the year.
Heller said he is working to persuade Republican leaders and other GOP senators to clear the way for federal legislation that would make it legal to play poker over the Internet. Such a bill would allow the casino industry to tap into the billions of dollars already being wagered online.

DELAWARE APPROVES ONLINE POKER AMID GAMBLING EXPANSION
A broad-based expansion of gambling opportunities was signed into law by Delaware Governor Jack Markell one day after Delaware’s state Senate passed a House bill authorizing several forms of online gambling, including online poker. Online casino games and NFL parlay betting were also included in the bill, which will call for residents to purchase deposit vouchers from authorized state sales agents once various online network pieces are up and running.

Reports that Sens. Harry Reid and Jon Kyl are inching closer to a deal on legalizing online poker have heads turning toward Nevada’s junior senator, Republican Dean Heller, to see if he will be able to help close the deal.
“We need to do something to make it fair,” Reid said Thursday. “Now we’re looking, as with a lot of things around here, for some Republican support.”
Heller is one of only a handful of senators privy to the embryonic deal developed between Reid and Kyl, which has yet to surface as a draft document or designate a legislative vehicle to go through Congress.

After lying in a state of suspension for much of this year, there has been a flurry of activity in the halls of Congress regarding federal regulation of online poker, upping the optimism for many Americans regarding the reopening of internet poker for millions.
Recently, Nevada Senator and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Arizona Senator Jon Kyl announced that they had come to an agreement regarding their proposed bill to regulate online poker. According to several outlets, Reid and Kyl are now floating this proposed bill to their fellow Senators in an attempt to put together enough votes to pass the measure. Sen. Reid stated yesterday that the bill is “now waiting again” to garner enough support from Republican senators to ensure its passage.

Here's the lineup of who's in the top ten as of this writing:
Marc-Andre Ladouceur (15,875,000) from Montreal, QB
Daniel Strelitz (12,790,000) from Torrance, CA
Robert Salaburu (10,915,000) from San Antonio, TX
Russell Thomas (9,985,000) from Wallingford, PA
Elisabeth Hille (9,770,000) from Bergen, Norway
Yuval Bronshtein (9,735,000) from Charleston, SC
Jamie Robbins (8,750,000) from Portland, OR
Robert Corcione (8,745,000) from Bellingham, MA
Cylus Watson (8,500,000) from Madbury, NH
Jeremy Ausmus (8,300,000) from Las Vegas, NV
At this time, there are only two women left in the running, Norway's Elizabeth Hille (Norway) and Gaelle Baumann from France. Day six saw both Marcia Topp and Vanessa Selbst hitting the rail fairly early on in play. In fact, none of the 36 former November Niners are in play. Sam Holden and Eric Buchman were also eliminated on day six.
With 70 players eliminated in a single day, everyone who's now in contention has definitely proven that they've got what it takes to make it. No matter how they play, they'll definitely end up with over a quarter million added to their bankroll.
Day Seven's play starts at Level 30 with blinds at 60000/120000 and the ante at 15000.
Want to see if you've got what it takes to compete on the felt? Play online poker at Bovada today and you can enjoy massive guaranteed poker tournaments, the best deposit bonus going and world-class player support!
