After six years in business, one of the more popular, under-the-radar online poker rooms in the industry has decided to call it a day. Late last week, Poker Nordica let its customers know that it was shutting down its operations on April 1st, 2012. Unfortunately, this was no April Fool’s joke.

Poker Nordica customers had become very worried about the normally reliable company over the last couple months, as e-mails to customer support received no responses. In mid-March, one poster on the Two Plus Two poker forum said he sent e-mails to the Merge Poker Network (of which Poker Nordica was a member), posted on Poker Nordica’s Facebook page, sent messages to the poker room’s Twitter account, and even contacted his affiliate to try to get any sort of response. He eventually heard back from the network’s security department, which informed him that they had no record of any of his e-mails.

I’ve been playing profitable poker for years, and with more recent success, I may write and post more on poker. I’ve had to limit my poker coverage due to various commitments along with sports handicapping, but after playing in recent months some of the stories and follies from the felt may have to be brought forward. As you can image, there is often plenty of sports betting talk at the poker table, as poker player’s talk about the games and betting lines. Yet much of the poor reasoning and thought processes of the recreational sports bettor is also found in poor play and decisions at the poker table.

It seems that the number of women playing poker online is on an increase. According to a study, the numbers of women playing online poker is higher than ever since online gambling first appeared. And as a result of this study, it’s no wonder that a lot of the professional players at high stakes poker rooms are women. It is no surprise, as male dominated jobs in the past are now performed by women with ease.

An update on Full Tilt Poker, a stacked field for the EPT’s Super High Roller event, and online gaming progresses in New Jersey. It’s all in Wednesday’s edition of the PTP Hit and Run.

FTP update: After yesterday’s news that Full Tilt Poker was hiring staff, the online poker community was hopeful that the announcement of a deal for Groupe Bernard Tapie to buy the troubled online site was imminent. It may be, but it still hasn’t happened, yet. We will keep you posted. For right now, all we have is some job listings and a lot of speculation. You can get a recap of what we know here.

27-year-old Max Katz has a started playing online poker way back in 2004 and quickly established himself as a player to watch, even if he never took the top spot in any truly spectacular events. He soon started backing other poker pros once his bankroll had established itself and he and his team of investors got shares of prizes like Pius Heinz's WSOP Main Event win last year

Flush with the money from that win, Katz decided to stand as a candidate for the municipal council of one Moscot district after reading an appeal by the opposition party Yabloko for candidates for the municipal council elections. He told the press that he is not one of a "frustrated city dweller" and does not want to be labelled by the media as one of the protesters. "I’m actually quite satisfied," he added.

It turns out that Katz has always had a plan to join the government. "I want to become mayor in a small Russian town when I am 35, and test my urban development plans," Mr Katz told one Russian newspaper.

His campaign certainly was different from most. His campaign flyers read: "My name is Max Katz. I am 27 years old. The election for the Shchukino municipal council is being held on March 4. This body is completely useless. It possesses no power whatsoever."

"Everyone told me I should make the same promises other politicians were making, that I would vow to punish corrupt politicians, reduce the costs of gas and water, and so on. But I chose to be honest," he says.

That's a distinct change from the bluffing and deception that has made him such a name in the Russian poker scene.

Want to start funding your own campaign? Play online poker at Bovada! They offer tournaments for every player and the best player support in the business.

However, now it would seem that California may not be working with Nevada and will have to take its own online poker bill to the floor by itself.

In a dramatic high-stakes poker game spanning three days, 21-year-old Viktor Blom from Dals-Ed won half a million dollars from seasoned American pro player Isaac Haxton.

Known in the online poker world as “Isildur1,” Blom is Sweden’s most famous high-stakes poker player.

He’s been known to win or lose millions of dollars in a single day and he’s been part of several of the biggest pots ever played online, including the biggest of all-time in November 2009 when he lost a $1.35 million pot to Patrik Antonius from Finland.

Since December 2010 Blom has had a sponsorship deal with the world’s largest poker site PokerStars. As part of the agreement the young Swede will take on any opponent who wants to challenge him in a special heads-up poker format called the SuperStar Showdown.

With so many young players dominating the recent headlines with major tournament wins, you might think that poker is becoming a game where being young means having an edge.

If you look closer, however, that might not be the case.

Many young players earn themselves a fortune in poker within a very short period of time only to quickly burn out.

In the last two years the poker world has seen a surprising amount of young players “retiring” prematurely.

Take Mike “Timex” McDonald as an extreme example. The Canadian player exploded on the live poker scene in 2008 when he won the EPT Dortmund and over €1 million euro at the age of 18.

It's 9am in sunny Los Angeles. John O'Shea is off to bed for some well-deserved rest after 12 hours straight at the poker table. But the 27-year-old Dubliner sounds decidedly downbeat. He's had a bad run on the green baize over four or five days and has lost $150,000 (€112,000) -- about 25pc of his bankroll, or float.

For most ordinary punters, this would be unimaginable. But for O'Shea, it's just another day at the office.

That week's loss isn't exactly small change -- even by O'Shea's high standards -- but with estimated career profits of $2m (€1.5m), there's plenty more left in the kitty.

Fast Poker is the latest craze to hit online poker. With Fast Poker there is no need to wait for the next hand to be dealt and everything speeds up so you are literally a second away from being involved in a new hand!

Using cash games as an example, a standard game would see you seated at a two, six, or nine-handed table against the same opponents until one of them left the table and was replaced by a new player. But in Fast Poker the focus is on player pools instead, so once a hand has been completed, you are instantly whisked away to a new table where a new hand is dealt against new opponents! You can even fold your hand before it is your turn to act, without your opponents knowing, and be dealt a fresh hand.

There are quite a few websites that currently offer online gambling options to users all over the world. After recently doing a few reviews of the various websites, Betting Tips 101 says in the Bodog review that the London based website has the best user-interface.

Every type of online gambling is covered on Bodog. Users can place bets on sporting events, or they can play traditional casino games.

There is even a dedicated poker section for those wanting to play the popular card game. The truth is, a lot of other websites offer these games as well. As pointed out in Betting Tips 101’s Bodog review, what makes this website a cut above the rest is customer satisfaction. Betting online could not be easier with the way the website is set up.

They have 24/7 customer support that gives users confidence that they can literally use the website any time they wish. For an online gambling website, this is a must to be taken seriously. Finally, in the Bodog review on Betting Tips 101, they point out how often they run specials, discounts and bonuses.

Online gambling in general is just that (gambling), but the specials increase the odds and make it easier to walk away a winner. That is something every gambler would like to do. Finding a place that to trust with money is important before ever thinking about online gambling. After going through numerous websites, the unbiased Bodog review came out on
top.
