In March, the Iowa state senate voted 29-20 to approve Senate File 2275, legislation to create an online poker network. Before the vote, Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal, D-Council Bluffs, said he thought the bill would face stiffer opposition in the Republican-controlled House, an opinion shared by House Speaker Kraig Paulsen, R-Hiawatha.

This makes it clear that action is needed from Iowa’s poker players. If you’d like to see this bill passed, call your state senator and congressmen (numbers can be found at theppa.org).

The Seminole Hard Rock Hotel in Hollywood, Fla., hosted the World Poker Tour's inaugural Lucky Hearts Poker Open in mid-February. Instead of being shown on TV, the final table was streamed online with a 30-minute delay, and commentary for the event was my responsibility -- giving me a convenient professional excuse to be out of town on the sentimentally precarious corporate holiday known as Valentine's Day. It's always great to be able to simultaneously avoid and fulfill responsibility.

When the Department of Justice seized the domains of major poker sites last year, it dramatically changed the poker landscape. Minnesota poker professional Jason Senti, best known for his seventh-place finish in the 2010 World Series of Poker Main Event, was affected by Black Friday for sure.

Senti didn’t play much online between the time he made the main-event final table and March 2011. He planned to get back to grinding lots of online poker from March until the beginning of the 2011 WSOP, where he planned to play about 30 tournaments. In fact, he did play 5-10 hours a day five days a week for the month leading up to April 15.

A popular California newspaper has published an op-ed piece that comes out against any proposals by the state’s political or business factions to bring online poker to the state.

In an article in the San Diego Union-Tribune, writer James B. Butler pens an op-ed entitled, “Worth A Gamble? Legislation Is Losing Bet For State.” He opens his opinion piece by saying, “Why would the state Legislature pass a bill that would increase the rate of crime, unemployment, welfare, homelessness, bankruptcies and suicide? The short answer: It is what the very rich and powerful gambling interests want them to do.”

With several states at least considering the option of intrastate online poker and the federal government still seemingly entertaining the idea of licensing and regulating the industry, the state of Utah has decided to head in the other direction.

Earlier this last week, Governor Gary Herbert signed into law a bill that makes online poker illegal in the Beehive State. The bill, titled HB108, was passed earlier this month by the Utah House by a 62-10 vote and sailed through the Senate unanimously. In enacting this new legislation, Gov. Herbert has made Utah the ninth state to officially have a law on the books that outlaws online poker and gaming, making it a misdemeanor crime under its statutes (it was considered to make it a felony). Additionally, the language of the bill has far reaching effects that will impact citizens of the state in the future.

After four years of shedding sweat on the field, former UB football player Travell Thomas put down his jersey and walked away from the game. He traded his helmet and pads for a different type of competitive sport – one with significantly less contact, but an equal amount of excitement: poker.

Hi,

I work for a production company in Los Angeles, California and I am doing research on poker/casino games. I need to know the answers to these questions:

1.) About how many physical poker tables are there in America/ north America?
2.) How many casino games utilize a "dealer button"?

Any answers/sources to these questions are greatly appreciated, thanks!!

Utah has earned the title as the first state in history to pass laws which makes it illegal for residents to play poker online. The bill, which is titled HB108, was signed into law by Governor Gary Herbert after it passed through the House by an overwhelming vote in its favor.

Utah’s dubious claim to fame as the first state to pass this type of law comes in response to a trend by other states to shift the other way and ready themselves for changes in online poker laws on a federal level, which will allow them to offer intrastate online poker. Utah, which is one of two states which doesn’t allow gambling of any kind, decided to end any dilemma which lawmakers might have in the future if and when federal laws change and simply passed a law making it a misdemeanor to play online poker and casino games.

Italy's online poker industry is the biggest in the entire European Union now that it has passed the United Kingdom in statistical terms, according to figures published by leading gaming data specialist H2 Capital.

Italy Online Poker Leader

Italy was one of the first major European countries to officially legalize and regulate online poker, casino and slots, although it initially only allowed tournament poker. However, in July 2011 the country introduced laws which allow Italians to play real-money poker online for the first time.
