The European Commission said Wednesday it has ensured that Italian citizens will have access to a wider choice of authorised on-line gambling services as a result of changes made to Italy's laws on online gambling. The Commission has therefore closed a series of legal cases against Italy concerning this legislation.

The Commission had previously found that Italy's restrictions on foreign operators were disproportionate and had started legal proceedings against Italy for breaching EU rules on the freedom to provide services. :dirol

It looks as if a companion bill to Congressman Barney Frank’s HR2267 may be the subject of a hearing later this month ahead of HR 2267 itself.

Staffers in the office of Representative Jim McDermott have hinted that May 19 and 20, although not yet confirmed, could be the dates on which his Gambling Regulation and Tax Enforcement Act will be discussed in a House Ways and Means Committee hearing.

Political observers point out that if such a hearing eventuates, it will be the first time the bill has enjoyed its own focus – on taxing a liberated US online gambling market – in the House.

Bringing the McDermott bill into the spotlight could complement its companion Frank bill, which seeks the legalisation of online gambling. In December Frank held a hearing on his HR2267 bill in the House Financial Services Committee, and is on record as saying another hearing is likely in May.

Frank’s other legislative proposal, which has the objective of delaying the implementation of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act until the legalisation issue is resolved, would appear to have little chance of success.

Proponents of the UIGEA have already been angered and frustrated by the successful postponement of the regulations to June 1st this year, and there appears to be little appetite in the Obama administration for a further extension.

A hearing scheduled for April 16 was postponed indefinitely due to a scheduling problem in Frank’s office and nothing further has been heard on it.

In these difficult economic times, when both federal and state budgets are under considerable stress, the potential of the McDermott bill to generate billions in tax revenues and increase employment opportunities is a powerful attraction, with the potential to improve the chances of the Frank bill that it complements – the bills are mutually supportive.

Seven independent bookmakers have joined forces online to compete with rival chain operators for a slice of the 1.5 billion euro internet gambling trade.

Directors of new site BetPack.com said it is hoped the project will safeguard the jobs of 500 betting shop staff around the country.

BetPack spokesman Jimmy Finlay said it was one of the biggest ever developments in Irish bookmaking.

The House Ways and Means Committee has scheduled a hearing on tax issues related to possible changes in the online gambling laws in the US. House ways and Means Chairman announced the hearing on Wednesday, and it is scheduled for May 19th.

The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act is set to take effect in less than three weeks. The UIGEA makes it illegal for financial institutions to knowingly process gambling payments to and from online gambling sites.

Even though Miss USA host Curtis Stone was sporting the largest pair of shoes ever worn at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, the sheer girth of his clown feet was not enough to stop Miss Michigan, Rima Fakih, from taking home the title of Miss USA 2010. Fakih had suffered a bit of a slip during the evening gown competition when she tripped on the train of her long, strapless dress. She stumbled, but was able to save herself from an embarrassing fall, which would have surely found its way onto YouTube within minutes.

Fakih, who hails from Dearborn, Mich., won the pageant after swimsuit, evening gown and interview competitions.

The swimsuit portion was slightly awkward for all contestants, who were forced to dance around in their swimwear while a cheesy band played.

During the all-important interview portion, Fakih was asked whether she felt birth control should be covered by health insurance, Fakih said, "I believe that birth control is just like every other medication even though it's a controlled substance."

Perhaps trying to recapture the controversial glory the pageant had with Carrie Prejean's gay marriage question, "The Office" actor Oscar Nunez asked Miss Oklahoma Morgan Elizabeth Woolard about her stance on Arizona's controversial new immigration law. Before he could finish the question, the audience booed. Woolard said she supports the law and is against illegal immigration but is also against racial profiling.

"I'm a huge believer in states' rights," Woolard said. "I think that's what's so wonderful about America. So I think it's perfectly fine for Arizona to create that law."

Dispite the diplomacy of her answer, Woolard earned first runner-up in the competition.

Miss Virginia Samantha Evelyn Casey was the second runner-up, Miss Colorado Jessica Hartman won third runner-up, and Miss Maine Katherine Ashley Whittier earned fourth runner-up.

When asked how she felt about winning the crown, Rima Fakih said, "Ask me after I've had a pizza."

Fakih was crowned by Miss USA 2009 winner Kristen Dalton. Do you think Fakih deserved the title of Miss USA?
