N an effort to increase taxable revenue for the state’s budget, Florida’s state government is contemplating statewide casino gambling. Proposals for the gambling measure have been turned in by two Las Vegas-based casino and hotel companies. Governor Rick Scott, though opposed to statewide gambling in Florida during his campaign, remains open to the idea of slot machines, poker tables and more in Florida.
Scott met with brass from the Las Vegas Sands Corp. — the company who owns The Venetian and international casinos — shortly before moving into the governor’s mansion. Las Vegas Corp. and their CEO Sheldon Adelson said they may invest upwards of $3 billion on a casino/hotel/resort in Miami.
Scott says he doesn’t want “Florida to become very largely dependent on gaming for revenue.”
The Sunshine State currently has seven casino and gambling sites operated by the Seminole Indian Tribe along with a statewide lottery.
“The concept is not just to create a source of revenue for the state that could equal or surpass the lottery,” says Al Cardenas, who represents Wynn Casinos. “More important is the billions that would be invested in our state and the creation of tens of thousands of permanent, high-paying jobs.”
Wynn Casinos has joined Las Vegas Sands Corp. in making bids to invest in Miami’s fabled gaming industry.
“We’re a big-time gambling state, and we need to figure out in general how we’re going to maximize revenue because people are going to gamble,” says Florida Senator Mike Haridopolos.

It’s hard to believe that casinos in the U.S. aren’t focusing more of their marketing efforts toward the Spanish-speaking community, because according to the 2010 Census, there are over 50 million Latino residents living in the U.S., and many of them can identify with the second most popular language in the country – Spanish. A Southern California casino, Buffalo Bill’s Casino is taking on the challenge of offering bi-lingual Blackjack which gives Spanish speaking visitors a chance to say “Tengo Blackjack.”
According to the Las Vegas Sun, Buffalo Bill’s wants to work toward targeting Spanish speakers by offering a “Serie de Conciertos Latinos” (Series of Latino Concerts), which will include Mexican bands such as Los Tigres del Norte and Jenni Rivera. The push for more Latino gamblers comes as an effort to attract a new audience and hopefully a new revenue stream.
The casino has set up various blackjack tables labeled “mesas bilingue” (bilingual tables) and such tables are under constant supervision by their Cuban Table Games Supervisor, Maria Macedo, explains the Las Vegas Sun.
Many casinos prefer that players and dealers stick to one language, mainly English, to help avoid what casino regulators call “collusion” but this is where Maria’s position as Table Games Supervisor comes into play by carefully deciphering player’s moves.
It’s amazing how Buffalo Bill’s numbers have improved, currently they’re claiming that nearly 80 percent of their casino slot machines are in use during the nights they welcome their Spanish musical acts and even boxing matches. It looks like Buffalo Bill’s has found a new and much profitable niche.
Side Note: If you know of any Spanish speakers who are looking to join Bodog Casino, let them know that they can count on our Spanish speaking customer service crew out of Costa Rica to answer any game related questions or issues.

On Thursday, Mystic Lake Casino experienced a brief fire as part of the building’s roof caught alight, much to the annoyance of many a gambler inside the Minnesota casino.
Construction workers were cutting a steel joist on the roof at around 9:30 a.m, when sparks hit the foam insulation causing the fire to break out.
Meanwhile, several floors below gamblers blissfully ignorant of the potential crisis continued to feed their favourite slot machines until staff began evacuating them to a safer area of the casino building. As casino visitor Char Ellingsley explains:
“They just kept asking me to move from section to section and it just smelled like plastic burning, like somebody dumped a cigarette in the ashtray.”
One lady that wasn’t too pleased at being made to move was Irene Weingartz, 77, of Mankato, who already had a $110 bonus notched up on her slot machine and refused to budge until she cashed out her winnings.
Later, wistfully looking over to her lucky slot machine behind the yellow evacuation tape Weingartz said: “I can’t go across the line to the machine. I guess there are enough other machines.”
During the incident, according to eye-witnesses, fire and black smoke could be seen emanating from the Mystic Lake Casino roof, while fire department workers hacked through the roof and sprayed it with water. Amazingly, half the casino’s gambling area remained opened during the fire.
The fire eventually came under control at around 10:30am, while at 11am over 100 casino customers undeterred by the smoky smell had already lined up for the casino’s 2-for-1 brunch deal. One of them, Paul Kicksey, 64, commented:
“I came for the brunch. It was hazy over there [pointing towards the taped-off section]. The place is half shut down. I’ve never seen it like this.”
Fortunately, no one was injured and firefighter Prettyman, who was familiar with resilient casino goers under reacting in potentially dangerous situations humorously remarked:
“Their motto is ‘This too shall pass’.”

Exactly a week ago the new web site of Omni Casino was released and it has proved to be a smash hit according to the latest edition of The Omni Times newsletter. The newsletter delivers another message. "But wait! We're not done. Omni Casino is in the testing phase of the new casino lobby graphics and we can say that it looks absolutely stunning!" Till the new lobby goes live it is business as usual at Omni Casino.
Two new bonuses have been announced. The first one is the Super Saturday – 2X Offer, which has been made because everyone loves free $100 chips. This offer is for Saturday January 22. The first and second deposit of $25 or more made by a player that day will be matched by Omni Casino with a bonus of 100% up to $100 per deposit. Since the offer can be claimed twice players can get free wagering money amounting to $200 on Saturday. The usual wagering conditions apply that can be checked out in The Omni Times newsletter. The important ones are that the deposit and the bonus must be wagered 25 times before a withdrawal is requested and that the wagering can be done only on the slots games at Omni Casino. The second new bonus is Sunday Rain. Omni Casino offers a bonus of 50% of the first deposit made on Sunday January 23 up to a limit of $100.
On Monday January 24 an old popular bonus is being repeated. This is the Mad Money Monday bonus. All Omni Casino members that have played on any of the days over the previous weekend can claim a 150% bonus up to $60. The minimum deposit required is only $20. In order to receive the bonus players will have to write to customer support at Omni Casino. On January 26 and January 27 players can claim the Winter Winfall bonus. On each of these two days Omni Casino will match a deposit of $25 or more with a 60% bonus up to $75. The best part of this bonus is that it can be claimed twice each day during the promotional period for a total of $300.
Something totally unheard of has happened at Omni Casino this week and it needs telling. For the first time since it was launched Pink Panther has not topped the chart of the most played casino game at Omni Casino. This week it has given way to another slot game Pharaoh's Secrets. Omni Casino is powered by software from Playtech. The Omni Times recommends a blackjack variant called Blackjack Switch, which is available only at Playtech online casinos.

The Cal Neva Lodge used to be one of the most frequented casinos for Frank Sinatra and his Rat Pack friends. The resort, however, ran into financial difficulties the past few years thanks to the economic recession in the US.
Now, under new ownership, the once-popular casino is set to re-open next Friday. The entire casino will not be open, only video poker and slot machines. That is, if Nevada gaming regulators approve the license for the resort.
The full table games will not be installed until the owners see a demand to bring them back. If all goes well, the table games could be up and running by the summer, but the key for the new ownership group is to take baby steps in the process to once again be a viable gaming option in Nevada.
The casino is situated in an area where residents of both California and Nevada have access. The Lake Tahoe location is on the California, Nevada border, and with the economy taking a turn for the better the past several months, the time seemed ideal for Strategic Gaming Management to re-open the casino.
The casino closed back in March. The rest of the resort remained open throughout the difficult economic times, and now they are preparing to welcome gaming back next Friday. Grant Lincoln, the CEO of the Nevada based company, believes they will have no problem gaining approval from Nevada regulators before next weekend.
Nevada's gaming industry has been in shambles since the economic recession. Two new resorts, CityCenter, and the Cosmopolitan, were being counted on to revive business at Las Vegas casinos, but neither has done much to attract tourists to the city. The Cosmo has only been open since late in 2010, so there is still a chance the resort can spark some interest from traveling gamblers.

Every year, professional gambler, Max Rubin holds the famed Blackjack Ball where the winner will be awarded the title of “The Best Gambler in the World.” The event is held in utter secrecy every year and is an invitation-only event where some of the most talented Blackjack players gather to compete for the coveted title.
Tournament organizer Max Rubin and attendees take the pledge to never disclose the location and the names of the players attending in fear of casinos finding out who they are. These guys are pros and make a living out of beating the casinos so it’s understood as to why this information doesn’t go public.
According to Max Rubin, he is declared the “Undisputed Overweight Comp Champion of the World” and after 35 years of playing Blackjack among other casino games, he has become a top celebrity, analyst and writer of the gambling community. He’s also worked together with casinos such as the Mirage, Harrah’s and Hilton casinos as a gaming consultant.
Rubin’s love for the game led to the creation of the Blackjack tournament where he requires all attendees to bring with them a chilled bottle of premium champagne in order to get through security. A journal from an attendee who posted his experience online, claims that after entering, players then move on to add one new member into the Hall of Fame. After the voting session they are then quizzed with gambling trivia and mathematical questions where only the top six will then move on to a second series of tests where their skills are put to the test (card counting, signaling, etc.).
This year’s winner was no other than The Wizard of Odds creator Michael Shackelford, who is an expert on the math behind the games. On his website, he claimed that there were far better Blackjack players who competed but his knowledge of trivia and math really helped propel him to win the Grosjean Cup 2011 for the 2011 World’s Greatest Blackjack Player.

A Las Vegas tourist, who was in town visiting her niece for her birthday, changed her life forever on Friday while playing a Megabucks slot machine at the Aria Hotel and Casino after winning a $12.7 million jackpot.
According to the Las Vegas Review Journal, the woman hit the Megabucks jackpot after playing a total of $6. “I was on my way to my room when I saw this machine and decided to play,” she said. Once the woman achieved the winning combination, she thought the machine had malfunctioned and had no idea she had won. It was her niece that actually noticed the machine had struck a winning combination awarding the $12 million prize; otherwise, the woman may just have walked away.
Now that she’s a millionaire, the Megabucks winner claims she is going to pay off her mortgage and hopefully buy her niece a really nice birthday present.
Megabucks slot machines are part of a special network linking over 150 casinos throughout the state of Nevada which means if someone scores a jackpot, then they are winning cash accumulated from Megabucks slots from around the state.
Megabucks creators claim that the largest jackpot awarded was $39 million back in 2003 from a player in the Excalibur Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. They say the odds of winning are 1 in 49,836,032 but one can dream…

Stanley Ho has been one of the sharpest and well-respected casino gambling minds in the history of the industry, but lately he has been dealing with failing health. On Monday it was revealed that Ho had transferred control of his empire to his family.
By Tuesday, lawyers who claim to be representing the casino mogul had fired back. Layers at Oldham, Li & Nie have reportedly written letters to Ho's third wife, and his second wife's family, contesting the division of the assets. The lawyers did not have kind words for the recipients of the fortune.
"It would appear the assets at Lanceford have been hijacked by members of the second and third family insofar as shares were issued to the effect to dilute Stanley to nothing," said Gordon Oldham, a partner in the law firm. It now appears the issue may be headed to the courts.
SJM Holdings is the big prize in the asset acquisition, but last year Ho gave a stake to his fourth wife to ensure she would continue to manage the day to day operations of the company. The other thirty-two percent was what was supposed to have been split up Monday when SJM informed the Hong Kong stock exchange of the changes.
SJM has been in a holding pattern, and investors are concerned that no matter who runs the company, SJM is not as stable as it was when Ho was overseeing the operations. The stock dropped slightly on Monday after word of the share changes leaked. With uncertainty brewing, the stock could be headed for more tough days ahead.
Ho built his empire by controlling a monopoly in Macau on casino gambling. When Macau decided to open up the industry to outside companies, Las Vegas powerhouse companies MGM Mirage, Las Vegas Sands, and Wynn Resorts pounced on the opportunity to enter the market. In the past decade, Macau has overtaken Las Vegas as the casino gambling capital of the world.

The Sun claims that the Magpies owner - who has built up an estimated £890m fortune through a chain of sporting goods shops - lost the cash at Aspers Casino, less than a quarter of a mile from St James' Park.
The incredible losses came during a night out with Newcastle manager Alan Pardew and club MD Derek Llambias, a result of Ashley suffering a bad run at the craps table after enjoying an early winning run.
"After a couple of hours he was £130,000 up," a source told The Sun. "They had a break and went to the bar for a drink. He put £100,000 into his casino account but kept £30,000 back in a carrier bag.
"At around 2am they were back at the craps table and Ashley started playing again.
"He was placing bets all over with £1,000 and £5,000 chips. It only took him about 10 minutes to lose that first £30,000, so he had to get some more chips. He bet thousands at a time, tens of thousands sometimes - covering the table with bets.
"They finally left at 4am and by that time he had lost £970,000. It was amazing but he didn't seem bothered at all. He had a smile on his face and tipped the dealer £700, which is astonishing really because people usually only give a tip if they've won."
Ashley is famed for his love of gambling, and became close friends with recently-appointed Magpies boss Pardew when they were regulars at an exclusive London casino - an enterprise run by Llambias.

A suspected member of the Nazi Low Riders and his wife have been charged with using counterfeit money at the San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino in Highland.
The state Department of Justice said Tuesday that casino staff suspected Donald Thrash of Ontario and his wife Kerry were gambling with counterfeit bills in December and called police.
Special Agent Dave Vialpando says agents searched Thrash's home in Ontario and found more than $1,000 in $5 bills that were washed and reprinted to look like $100 bills. They also found drugs and evidence that he belonged to a white supremacist street gang.
Vialpando says criminals are foolish to commit crimes in casinos because their actions are caught on video tape, which makes it easy to prosecute them.

Have you ever wondered what happened to the actor who played Carlton from the popular NBC sitcom “The Fresh Prince of Bel Aire”? Well, these days the jolly Alfonso Ribeira is hosting a TV game show called Catch 21 which combines the game of Blackjack with trivia and airs on the popular Game Show Network.
The game show is a variation of the classic game of Blackjack where players attempt to form the perfect hand adding up to a total of 21 without going over. Contestants are also given an opportunity to answer several trivia questions in hopes of earning points and choosing whether to be dealt a new card or just to stand. The winner will be the player with the most points accrued and with a hand totaling 21 will win the round.
After 3 rounds, the winner then moves on to a bonus round where they are in control of 3 hands and stand to win cash for every hand which adds up to 21. If the player should achieve Blackjack in all three hands then they win the grand prize of $25,000.
The GSN network also once hosted the World Series of Blackjack tournaments which included Celebrity Blackjack champion, Caroline Rhea who competed for $1 million in cash at the Las Vegas Hilton. Unfortunately, the WSOB tournaments ended back in 2007 but the game show “Catch 21” has been on the air since July 2008.

In yet another twist in an increasingly bizarre tug of war over a stake in one of the world’s largest casino empires, a law firm acting on behalf of Stanley Ho said Thursday that it had gone to court to prevent members of the gambling magnate’s family from acquiring the majority of his shares.
The announcement came just hours after the 89-year-old Mr. Ho, founder of a Macao-focused gambling operation, appeared on local television and said he had indeed intended to hand over his stake in the business to family members.
The statement, from the law firm Oldham, Li & Nie, said it had filed a writ of summons in Hong Kong’s High Court naming several family members as defendants and accusing them of “illegally passing resolutions to allot ordinary shares in the three companies controlled by them without providing full consideration.”
The saga that is riveting Hong Kong began Monday with a statement to the stock exchange announcing the transfer of the majority of Mr. Ho’s shares to parts of his sprawling family. It continued the next day when his lawyer, Gordon Oldham, said Mr. Ho had denied wanting to transfer control and had intended to contest the matter in court. That development was followed, in turn, by Mr. Ho’s television appearance.
Over the past few days, family members have said that they were acting with the consent of Mr. Ho.
In January, Forbes magazine ranked Mr. Ho as the 13th-richest man in Hong Kong, with a fortune estimated at $3.1 billion. Over a number of decades, he capitalized on the buildup of the neighboring city of Macao as a gambling hub; its revenues now surpass those of Las Vegas.
Questions about the future control of Mr. Ho’s empire intensified after he fell ill in 2009 and needed brain surgery.

The Atlantic City casino industry has been dealing with poor gambling revenue figures from slot machines for the past several years. Several jackpots that were hit in the past couple of weeks indicate that those figures may remain below average for January.
The Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa has become a popular place over the past couple of weeks for penny slot gamblers. In the past two weeks, almost $9 million in jackpots have been paid to two separate gamblers, the latest of which came Thursday night.
The win Thursday amounted to almost $5 million for a slot player who was at the Wizard of Oz Ruby Slippers slot. In all the jackpots, if paid out in pennies, would have totaled almost one billion pennies.
"Lightning struck twice in less than two weeks on our penny machines," said Borgata Senior Vice-President of Operations Joe Lupo. "And we couldn't be happier. We've always said that Borgata is a lucky place to play. I'm sure that these two customers would readily agree."
While the upbeat spin is nice, the reality is that the casinos in Atlantic City cannot afford to keep paying multi-million dollar jackpots on their penny machines. With gaming revenue continuing to slide at AC casinos, $9 million in jackpot wins is not exactly what the doctor ordered to change the revenue luck.
Many of the slot machines in Atlantic City are linked together throughout all of the casinos. The banks of machines and the singular jackpot allows the jackpot to grow faster and attract more customers. The casinos have also been working together in other ways to bring customers back to Atlantic City.
In the past couple of years, the recession is not the only reason revenue is down at AC casinos. Pennsylvania, New York, Maryland, Maine, and Delaware have all expanded their casino industries, and with each new casino opened in the Northeast, AC casinos have lost additional customers.

The components of the mystery appear as symbols on the reels. The Mansion is the location of the murder. A Sherlock Holmes look alike Detective is investigating the crime. The Lord and Lady of the mansion bear an uncanny resemblance to Colonel Mustard and Miss Scarlet of Cluedo. The murderer however appears to be the Butler who is shown holding a candlestick and a blood stained cloth. High value card symbols also appear on the reels. The Question Mark is the wild symbol. When it appears in a winning combination the symbol reveals the body of the victim. The It's a Mystery logo is the scatter symbol and it also triggers the Portrait Puzzle Feature.
The Portrait Puzzle Feature is triggered by three or more scatter symbols. A nine piece portrait is first shown in full and then shuffled. Any portrait piece that ends up in the correct position is locked and the remaining pieces shuffled again. The process is repeated a number of times. The total number of shuffles is equal to the number of scatter symbols that trigger the feature. At the end of the shuffles the pieces of the portrait in the correct positions determine the number of free spins from 5 to 50. The process is repeated to determine the multiplier from 1x to 6x. If the entire portrait happens to fall in place then bonus credits are awarded. Once the parameters are determined the free spins are executed.
The Win-Win Feature is now a part of most RTG slots. It compensates players for poor wins in the free spins feature. If players do not win anything in the free games they are compensated with a prize that is 100 times the triggering bet. If players win less than two times the triggering bet then the compensation is 12 times. The other innovative feature is the Feature Guarantee. This feature ensures that if the scatter symbols are unable to trigger the Portrait Puzzle Feature for 150 continuous spins then that feature will automatically be activated. A counter indicating the balance number of spins is displayed. The Feature Guarantee includes the Instant Trigger Chance. The players can attempt to trigger the Portrait Puzzle feature using it. The probability of success increases as the count down approaches zero.
