As a coach on The Ultimate Fighter 15, Urijah Faber thought he was going to get the chance to settle the score against Dominick Cruz and finally win a UFC title. However, an injury to Cruz forced the champ to bow out of the UFC 149 grudge match, temporarily changing the UFC Bantamweight championship picture.

Now Faber must face one of the hungriest young up-and-comers in the division in Renan “Barao” Pegado for an interim belt, and oddsmakers at Bovada have the former WEC champ listed as the underdog for Saturday's fight in Calgary. Currently handicapped at +160, Faber will need all his speed and experience to pay off against an aggressive opponent who will be taking the fight to him.
Barao has been an absolute wrecking machine at Bantamweight, compiling a record of 28-1-1 including a 27-fight unbeaten streak. He’s a combination of vicious striking and world-class jiu-jitsu skills with 19 finishes in 28 wins.
Originally handicapped as the Bovada +130 underdog, MMA bettors have been all over the Barao action so far and have moved the line all the way down to currently make him the -200 favorite. He’s expected to be too much for the aging Faber to handle at this stage in his career.
Barao also gains an edge with UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo in his camp. Aldo soundly beat Faber two years ago, and will surely share some secrets with his teammate.
The Faber option does have some value. Originally handicapped as the -160 favorite, Faber could prove to be a big step up in competition for Barao. The Brazilian has never faced a top-tier opponent the caliber of Faber, and if the big stage gets to him Faber will take quick advantage.

UFC 149 will feature a wide selection of action in numerous weight classes, and the welterweight fight that’s getting attention is the matchup between Chris Clements and Matt Riddle. Both fighters have had rocky roads to this point in their careers, but a win at UFC 149 will help them get a bigger fight against a contender the next time they step into the Octagon.
Sign up at Bovada NOW and deposit for your 20% Free Bet bonus up to $100.
Clements will come into this bout on a five-fight win streak, with four of those wins coming via TKO or KO finish. His UFC debut was against Keith Wisniewski when he won a narrow split decision; now he will face TUF alum Riddle in what will be Riddle’s 10th UFC fight.
Clements may be best known for having the fastest KO win in MMA history at only three seconds, but what’s really impressive about the Canadian welterweight has been the improvement he’s shown over the last two years. Against a known name in Riddle he gets a chance to put himself in the talent-rich UFC welterweight picture.
Riddle’s road in the UFC has been a bumpy journey following his time on The Ultimate Fighter 7. With a record of 1-2 in his last three Octagon appearances he will need a win to remain a profitable attraction for the organization. Barely getting past Henry Martinez in his one win of late, Riddle will need a better-than-usual performance on Saturday.
This fight will be between two aggressive strikers who have heavy hands and a torrid pace. With two hungry fighters giving it their all in the center of the Octagon it could go either way, and one could make an argument for either fighter coming out on top in this one.

As Renan Barao entered Ultimate Fighting Championship’s octagon on Saturday night, the lyrics to his walkout song blared through the arena speakers: All I Do Is Win.
Pretty prophetic.
The Brazilian star, long labeled one of the greatest mixed martial artists to never hold a major title, shed that tag at UFC 149. In the main event of the company’s debut in Calgary, Barao (31-1, 1 NC) extended his undefeated streak to 32 matches as he dominated crowd favourite Urijah Faber (26-6) on his way to a decisive unanimous decision victory. The pay-per-view drew a sellout crowd to the Scotiabank Saddledome.

After a decorated career with the Canadian promotion MFC, Ryan Jimmo made a memorable UFC debut. He knocked out Anthony Perosh in seven seconds at UFC 149 in Calgary on Saturday.
Light heavyweight Jimmo took two steps in at Perosh before unloading a massive right hand that knocked Perosh right against the fence. He followed up with a strike on the ground, but it wasn't needed. Referee Josh Rosenthal stopped the fight, and Jimmo's win streak was extended to 17.
"I'm very happy, Joe. I'm very happy," Jimmo said to commentator Joe Rogan. "He's a big strong guy, so I went at him."
UFC president Dana White was pleased with Jimmo's debut.

Last week when I said that UFC 149 was going to be a “sleeper” card, I was partially right. There is no doubt that some of you were probably sleeping.
Although going to see the UFC live is usually an amazing experience — and trust me, I did enjoy the week’s festivities — there was a part of me that felt sorry for the fans that put down big money to see what was an excellent preliminary card, and an absolute horrific main card. In fact, the show was so bad that even a new gate record didn’t take the scowl off UFC President Dana White’s face at the post-fight press conference.
I said this the other day and it’s true: We make money,” White said. “This company makes money, and I like breaking records. We broke the gate record tonight and I’m embarrassed by it. I was excited when I heard and now I’m embarrassed.

Hector Lombard will not be troubling Georges St-Pierre anytime soon, after the middleweight revealed he plans to stay at 185lbs.
Lombard produced one of the all-time great flops at UFC 149, failing to live up to the enormous hype as he dropped a split decision to Tim Boetsch. Defeat was only part of the problem, with Lombard's lacklustre style attracting most criticism.
Known for his explosive power, Lombard looked for the knockout only in short flurries against Boetsch, who was able to win despite breaking his foot in the first round.

Joseph Benavidez and Demetrious (Mighty Mouse) Johnson will be looking to join an exclusive group Sept. 22.
The two will battle for the first-ever flyweight championship at UFC 152 at the Air Canada Centre. The winner will not only be the 125-pound champion but also become just the eighth first-time division titleholder in the sport's history.
"This is huge," Benavidez said during a news conference Tuesday at the historic Massey Hall. "It's an honour to get into the UFC and to be a champion is also a dream but to be the first-ever only happens one time.
"I'm looking to be the George Washington of flyweight champions. Can't wait to come out here and put on a show."
This will mark Johnson's second title bout. Johnson (15-2-1) lost the bantamweight title (135 pounds) to Dominick Cruz on Oct. 1, 2011.

The exodus of fighters from Strikeforce to Ultimate Fighting Championship has been reversed – at least for one night.
Frank Mir, the UFC veteran and one of the most successful heavyweights in mixed martial arts history, has agreed to compete on a Strikeforce card this fall against Daniel Cormier, the former Olympic wrestling standout and recent winner of the Strikeforce heavyweight Grand Prix tournament.
According to a statement posted on the official Twitter page of Mir’s manager, Malki Kawa, Mir said “that he’s very excited about this opportunity and is very grateful to the (UFC) for making this fight happen.”
UFC and Strikeforce are both owned by parent company Zuffa LLC.
Many of Strikeforce’s most high-profile fighters of recent years are now under the UFC banner, including Nick Diaz, Alistair Overeem and Jake Shields. Cormier has one fight left on his Strikeforce contract before he will be able to sign with UFC. Under the current agreement with Showtime network, which broadcasts Strikeforce events, Zuffa management cannot move contracted fighters such as Cormier or current lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez from Strikeforce to UFC, even though Zuffa owns both promotions.

Hearing 125-pound fighter Danny Martinez (16-4) break down his division with such focus conjures up the image of the Alliance MMA fighter trying to catch flyweights with chopsticks in San Diego.
Then he starts talking about fighting itself, and the frustration of not punching opponents in the face becomes apparent. Awaiting his call to join the UFC’s flyweight ranks, Martinez has had eight fights fall apart – one every month for the last four months – since his last notable bout, a December 2010 unanimous decision loss to Jussier "Formiga" da Silva at Tachi Palace Fights 7.
It feels like a monthly debt he has to pay – giving away his money and sitting at home wondering how to replenish the bank.
Paying close attention to the 125-pound division, one bit of recent news slipped past him – the UFC signing the last man to defeat him, da Silva.

When Nick Diaz throws his hat into ring to fight Anderson Silva you know that the UFC has a circus. The suspended welterweight expressed his desire to fight Anderson Silva in an un-retirement interview through his manager Cesar Gracie at Graciefighter-com. Silva has cleared the middleweight division and their is not a legitimate competitor at middleweight who excites fans. The most-likely challenger is Chris Weidman, who is coming off of a victory over Mark Munoz. Impressive as it was, is he ready for Silva’s high level striking? Is anyone ready for that barrage?
Hector Lombard was supposed to be the savior. In certain circles Lombard was the middleweight golden child. After 25 consecutive victories, many believed he was the one to defeat Silva. Lombard has a string of knockouts but none of that matters when you step into the Octagon. He lost to Tim Boetsch, a fighter with gatekeeper talent, in my opinion. For the time being Lombard is not a title contender.

Mixed Martial Arts would make a great Olympic sport. Its unique mixture of required skills would bring a new crop of athletes to the Olympics, while also encouraging multi-sport crossovers within Olympic teams. MMA could make the cut in the future. It would take some work, a whole lot of time and changes, and probably more patience than the average fan possesses, but it could be done. Should some entity in the MMA world attempt to move the sport in that direction?
In the Ancient Olympics, MMA was known as Pankration, meaning "all powers." Of course, in the Ancient Greek tradition, competitors were naked and oiled, and rules were extremely liberal. Today's Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts have gone a long way to make the sport palatable to modern audiences. However, MMA will not be admitted in the Olympics under existing rules.

Randy Couture made his name as an MMA fighter, winning the UFC light heavyweight and heavyweight titles as part of a career that earned him a spot in the UFC Hall of Fame. But before his MMA and movie career, he was an alternate to the U.S. Olympic Greco-Roman wrestling team. Now retired from fighting and working on "The Expendables 2," he still loves the Olympics to this day.
He has high hopes for the wrestlers.
"We've got some returning medalists from the world champions. We have a freestyle heavyweight who looks promising, we have a returning champion in Jordan Burroughs. We have a returning medalist in Byers in [Dremiel] Greco. We definitely have some strong contenders. That's the thing about wrestling -- sometimes it comes down to the draw. Who you get first, who you get when in the tournament, and it's always interesting to see how things shake out."

After a two-week break the UFC returns to action this Saturday with the UFC on FOX 4. Looking to erase the memories of their last event (UFC 149) the promotion looks to the light heavyweight division to put on a show for the fans watching on network television.
After some changes at the top of the UFC on FOX 4 fight card, two former UFC light heavyweight champions will anchor things in separate bouts that have title shot implications.
In the main event Mauricio Rua will look to get back in the win column after his epic fight with Dan Henderson at UFC 139 when he faces Brandon Vera. It was announced during the pre-fight conference call that the winner of the night’s main event will be the next in line for the UFC light heavyweight title. Reigning UFC light heavyweight Jon Jones will be facing the above mentioned Dan Henderson at UFC 150 on August 11th.

When he debuted in the Octagon back in October, 2005, he held chambered in each deadly, decapitating head-kick all the potential in the world. And it seemed like that potential was being realized with a pair of wins by KO, a submission via guillotine, and a quick and violent mauling of Frank Mir. But Brandon Vera was a Cleveland Cavalier then, stuck banging his head against a ceiling that would forever prevent him from basking in the warm glow of an NBA championship victory party at Dwyane Wade's sprawling crib. Then came the announcement that Vera would be headlining UFC on FOX 4 opposite Brazilian hitman Mauricio "Shogun" Rua — and today's shocker from Dana White, that the winner of the bout gets to face UFC champ Jon Jones next — and it's as if "The Truth" has turned his back on his beloved home state and beaten a path to Miami. It's as if Brandon Vera is the MMA equivalent of LeBron James, eschewing Ohio for the Heat, and going where he could very well find that glory that has thus far eluded him. Well, you know what? Y'all needs to chill.

Ryan Bader will step into the Octagon this weekend against a former UFC Light Heavyweight champion for the fourth time in five fights as he meets Lyoto Machida at UFC on Fox 4.
Sign up at Bovada NOW and deposit for your 20% Free Bet bonus up to $100.
Bader will look to beat underdog odds for the second fight in row, as he's coming off an upset unanimous decision win over Quinton Jackson at UFC 144. This time he’s an even bigger dog against Machida, as he's currently being offered at +250 at Bovada. Machida is expected to be a fighting-style nightmare for Bader, who will somehow have to find a way to get The Dragon on the mat and keep him there.
Machida is coming off a devastating beating at the hands of the current UFC Light Heavyweight champ Jon Jones at UFC 140 and he has gone 1-3 in his last four fights. Despite his recent record, Machida is a heavy -325 favorite at Bovada and is expected to use his distance strikes to wear down his opponent for either a KO or a decision win.
Initially handicapped at -300, action on Machida has raised the price up to the current line of -325. His elusive style will likely give Bader big problems - as long as he stays out of the way of Bader’s power shots and doesn’t get taken to the ground.
Bader has a chance to land a heavy shot or outwrestle Machida for the win, but he will have to get his hands on him to do it. He will have to be wary of a striking style that he has never seen before, and let’s not forget how Tito Ortiz showed us how his chin is questionable when a punch lands in the right spot.
