Many poker pros, especially in the US, have either lost their sponsorships or have been unable to acquire one. Many feel that the current trend could have dire consequences for live poker tournaments as a whole. So, here is a look at what you can expect to happen to poker tournaments in a world without online sponsors.

Larger Buy-In Events Could Suffer

As was made evident at the 2012 World Series of Poker (WSOP), the affect of Black Friday coupled with the reduction of online poker sponsorship, resulted in dropoffs across the board for most of the events, including the main event.

What would Benny Binion think?

The legendary downtown Las Vegas casino owner enticed some the best poker players to his family's Horseshoe Casino on Fremont Street in 1970 for several days of high-stakes cash games inside the property's dark and smoky poker room.

That idea evolved into the World Series of Poker.

Binion, who died in 1988, might not recognize today what he created.

The World Series of Poker is now a year-round poker extravaganza, not just the annual seven-week tournament at the off-Strip Rio that has grown from its humble beginnings to a multi-million-dollar event.

The World Series of Poker Circuit Tournament, now in its ninth season, will make 20 stops through next May, starting this week at the IP Casino in Biloxi, Miss. Almost one-third of the events will take place at casinos not owned by Caesars Entertainment Corp., whose subsidiary, Montreal-based Caesars Interactive Entertainment, operates the World Series of Poker.

The World Series of Poker Circuit concludes with its National Championship event at Harrah's New Orleans in May. The conclusion comes just in time for the start of the 44th World Series of Poker at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino.

Meanwhile, the World Series of Poker Europe is in its sixth season and will host a series of events at the Casino Barrière de Cannes Croisette and the Hôtel Majestic Barrière in Cannes, France, for two weeks from the end of September through the beginning of October.

In April, the inaugural World Series of Poker Asia-Pacific event will take place at the Crown Entertainment Complex in Melbourne, Australia.

Which brings us back to the original World Series of Poker.

"It's really hard to call this a poker tournament anymore," said Ty Stewart, the World Series of Poker executive director and a vice president with Caesars Interactive.

Stewart joined the tournament in 2006 after spending seven years in the marketing department of the National Football League in New York City.

He is never understated in his opinions on the World Series of Poker and its place in the landscape of the gaming industry.

"This is all about the viability of poker and the interest from poker players 365 days a year," Stewart said. "I really don't think there is any end in sight on how much we can grow."

TIMES HAVE CHANGED

The 2012 PokerStars World Championship Of Online Poker (WCOOP), kicks off on Sept. 2 with the first of 62 high stakes poker tournaments over 22 days. Winning a WCOOP event is a fantastic experience but words are not enough to express what it must feel like to win the $5,200 No-Limit Hold'em Main Event that guarantees at least $1,000,000 to the eventual winner.

You could be in with a chance of playing in the 2012 WCOOP Main Event for free thanks to our $20,000 WCOOP Freerolls. We have three PokerNews-exclusive freerolls that all take place on Aug. 28 at 14:00 ET (19:00 BST) and you could be playing in them for free.

The first of the three freerolls is open to new PokerNews and PokerNetwork registered players who make a deposit from Aug. 1 through 31 and existing PokerNews and PokerNetwork customers who have generated at least 35 VPPs from Aug. 1 through 31.

Fresh off the opening tournament of their Season XI schedule on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus, the World Poker Tour is wasting little time in getting back to action with their inaugural Season XI tournament on American soil.

The entirety of the WPT staff arrived at the Parx Casino in Bensalem, PA, for the first televised event of the Season XI schedule yesterday, featuring the first of two Day Ones. The $3500 buy in tournament is offering one of the unique twists to the WPT schedule from last year – the re-entry option – meaning that any player eliminated on Day 1A has the option of returning for Saturday’s play. That didn’t keep the crème of the poker world from turning out on Day 1A, however.

As it started, 204 players were in their chairs when the cards hit the air on Friday. Some of the more notable names had some tough beats in the early going, with Jon “PearlJammer” Turner running pocket Kings into his opponent’s pocket Aces one of the big hands. Todd Terry also dropped a few chips when, on two occasions, he saw pocket Aces and pocket Kings out-flopped when Joseph Cheong hit sets against him. He only dropped slightly more than 5K in tournament chips, however, prompting Olivier Busquet to ask him over Twitter, “How do you have any chips left?”

The World Poker Tour continued its first stop on American soil for its Season XI schedule yesterday in Pennsylvania with the second of two Day Ones at the Parx Casino in Bensalem.

The stunning surprise of the opening of Day 1B was the appearance of defending WPT World Champion Marvin Rettenmaier on the ground at the Parx Casino. Rettenmaier, who made history just prior to the Parx tournament by winning the inaugural Season XI stop at the WPT Merit Cyprus Classic to become the first player in WPT history to win back-to-back tournaments, apparently DID have a teleporter available to get to the U. S. before the start of the Day 1B festivities. At the start of the day’s action, he was joined by another 182 players, including such names as Matt Glantz, Allen Kessler, Tony Dunst, Amanda Musumeci, Joseph Cheong and Matt Stout, who all decided to fire a second bullet in this re-entry tournament.

With late registration open until late in the afternoon, the players wasted little time getting to the business at hand. Kathy Liebert, who was kept from being among the Day 1A players after a flight cancelation and a delayed flight, made her way to the tables while Cheong and Bernard Lee increased their stacks in the early going. Lee, in fact, made one of the bigger hands of the day when, on a Q-9-8 flop, he called a flop and turn bet to see two sevens complete the board. When it came to showdown, Lee “only” turned up pocket sevens for rivered quads to crush his opponent.

A new hand history replayer and poker tracking application has been released into the online poker market called Tournament Poker Manager. This application currently supports the Bovada, Bodog, Merge, and Revolution networks.

This product is somewhat unique in that it markets itself not as a real-time database, but rather as a method for keeping track of your online tournament progress both financially and statistically. At the same time, it boasts a hand history replayer that is clean in layout with complete graphics.

The program, which is currently available for download in its beta version, has several key features including a compact database that enables easy tracking of tournament results without utilizing a large amount of your computer's resources. For example, results that a player receives after each event are automatically saved from the hand histories.

You can input the pertinent information you're looking to analyze in each tournament and there are no fields required in order to save your data. With Tournament Poker Manager, you can export your hand histories and other information to an Excel spreadsheet. Plus, there is a utility to import all hand history summaries directly. The Mass Import utility gathers data from CSV files, which makes loading tournament results from any poker site a simple process.

Although they technically opened up a few days ago, the European Poker Tour will officially throw open the gates on its Season Nine schedule tomorrow as the first of its Main Event tournaments plays out in Barcelona, Spain, at the Casino de Barcelona.

The reason there’s a “technically” in that first paragraph is one of the changes that has come around for the Season Nine schedule of the EPT. In the past, the EPT has simply slid into town, run their Main Event tournament and then moved onto the next port of call. This year, the EPT streamlined their schedule to only eight tournaments (at this time), but each one will have more of a “poker festival” atmosphere than in years past, extending over nearly two weeks rather than just a few days.

The EPT Barcelona actually kicked off on Monday with satellite tournaments for the Estrella Poker Tour, the regional tour sponsored by EPT sponsor PokerStars and another feature at each stop on this year’s EPT schedule (the teaming with the regional tour). The Estrella Poker Tour’s Main Event picked up on Wednesday, drawing in a monster field of 1036 players that built a prize pool of over €1 million and is working to a champion as we speak.

The ox of Rome took down the Estrellas Poker Tour Main Event last night with more than a little help from the ladies.

Very few people will have previously heard of Lorenzo Sabato on the live poker circuit but, under the name of “bovediroma” (the ox of Rome”), Sabato has been storming the online tournaments on PokerStars.it.

Throughout the record-breaking Estrellas Poker Tour Main Event, Sabato has transferred his online skills to the tables of Barcelona – leading the tournament after two days and last night claiming the Estrellas Champion´s Plaque and first prize of €200,000.

As the final table started, many locals were hoping to cheer a Spanish victory. From an abysmal start to the Estrellas Main Event – where only four Spanish players featured in the top 24 positions – the “home team” had recovered to have four contenders among the final table of eight, including the two chip leaders:- Lorenzo Sabato is the Star of Estrellas Main Event

This season of the PokerStars European Poker Tour (EPT) will see a couple of changes; the London stop has found a new home, and there has been a change of date for EPT Berlin.

Firstly, EPT London will take place next spring, Mar. 6-16, at The Landmark Hotel. Originally one of the nineteenth century’s great railway hotels, the new location will house players for the £5,250 main event (Mar. 10-16), while the Grosvenor Victoria Casino will act as host for a selection of the Tour’s side events and cash games.

The casino is in walking distance of the prestigious five-star hotel.

Secondly, the EPT has announced that it has changed the dates for its Berlin festival to facilitate players wanting to hop from stop to stop. Originally, Berlin was scheduled for Apr. 24 to May 4, but in order to squeeze in the Italian Poker Tour (IPT) San Remo between the EPT German leg and the final in Monte Carlo, the date has been pulled back to Apr. 17.
