After reports were published earlier this morning that seemed to confirm that PokerStars has finalized a deal with the United States Department of Justice to pay back frozen Full Tilt Poker player funds, it looks as if Full Tilt Poker’s software platform will also re-open in November.

As we reported in our first story, Wendeen Eolis of Poker Player Newspaper tweeted confirmations of this earlier this morning:

David Allan from Australia became the fourth NZPT Queenstown Champion, outplaying 148 rivals to take home the 2012 PokerStars-net NZPT Queenstown - SKYCITY Snowfest Championship trophy and the highest prize yet for a NZPT Queenstown event of NZD $110,600.

The Final Table began with nine players left from a record field of 149 people from 17 different countries, battling for a record total prize pool for Queenstown poker of NZD $402,300.

David took the Championship title from Ken Demlakian from Australia after two hours of playing heads up. Ken takes home NZD $70,400 for second place and Jordan Westmorland, an American living in Thailand, won NZD $41,200 for placing third.

In a field dominated by Australians, the highest placed New Zealander was Chiu Yeung Lee in tenth place taking home NZD $9,060 and the highest ranked woman, also a New Zealander, was Tatjana Zizic in fifteenth place winning $7,050. Local business man Fergus Spary was the highest placing Queenstown player, coming in twenty fifth.

Team PokerStars-net PRO Bryan Huang from Singapore who has been the face of the tournament this week placed seventh, taking home $19,100. Although Bryan was hoping to take out the title, he has enjoyed his time in Queenstown with his wife Summer and says Queenstown is one of his favourite poker destinations.

It has been a great weekend for online poker players from the United Kingdom. First we had Craig McCorkell winning the $150,000 ChampionChip event on Ongame and we also had the player known as welshwizard9 going all the way and taking down the PokerStars Sunday Million; the largest weekly online poker tournament.

This week's $200+$15 Sunday Million attracted a gigantic crowd of 6,153 and all but 900 of those went home empty handed, with only VPPs to show for their efforts. The 900 who made it to the money were whittled down to the nine handed final table by the end of Level 36 and when the finale commenced welshwizard9 found himself as the chip leader but not having the best of seats due to Team PokerStars Pro Richard Toth being two to his left.

The embattled online gambling hub PokerStars and the Department of Justice showed their hands Tuesday, reaching a $731 million settlement nearly 16 months after the company was charged with fraud and other offenses.

Under the terms of the deal, the website — one of three Internet poker outlets hit by an Obama administration crackdown in April 2011 — admits no wrongdoing or guilt. It acquires all the assets of its former competitor Full Tilt Poker.

“Today’s settlements demonstrate that if you engage in conduct that violates the laws of the United States, as we alleged in this case, then even if you are doing so from across the ocean, you will have to answer for that conduct and turn over your ill-gotten gains,” U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said in a statement announcing the deal.

With an agreement in hand that admits no wrongdoing and allows for re-entry into the U.S. online poker market, PokerStars will undoubtedly apply for a license.

The agreement brokered between PokerStars, Full Tilt and the U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ) in which PokerStars has acquired the assets of Full Tilt allows the world’s top poker site to re-enter the U.S. online poker marketplace as long as they are granted a license under either a state or federal framework. The agreement specifically states, "PokerStars is prohibited from offering online poker in the U.S. for real money unless and until it is legal to do so under U.S. law." This was a crucial element to the agreement that in all likelihood would not have been finalized without its inclusion.

Last week in Washington, D.C., it was announced that PokerStars has purchased the assets of Full Tilt and settled that company’s legal disputes with the U.S. Department of Justice.

John Pappas (right), executive director of Poker Players Alliance, the leading poker grassroots advocacy group in the nation with more than one million members nationwide, supported the decision, which means tens of thousands of Americans will be able to seek reimbursement of the more than $150 million owed to them since April 15, 2011.

“We applaud that the parties made a process for the restitution of the players a central component of the agreement, and appreciate the government’s commitment to the fair treatment of the players,” Pappas said. “At the same time, let’s remember that Americans still remain unable to play poker with safe and secure online sites based in the U.S. – a freedom and consumer protection they should not be denied.

“The PPA and its members continue to urge Congress to quickly enact thoughtful legislation to create a licensed and regulated U.S. online poker market that restores Americans’ freedom to enjoy a game of poker from their home computer,” Pappas said.

The government has not yet released the precise details on how reimbursements will occur. It is the PPA’s position that the government must take all steps necessary to ensure the process for the players to recover their full funds is not unduly burdensome.

Party Poker is the latest site to launch a fast-fold variant of online poker, called FastForward.

FastForward is much like its predecessors on other online poker sites: Rush Poker on Full Tilt Poker and Zoom Poker on PokerStars. Players join a “cloud” of players playing at the same stakes. Hands are dealt, and players can choose to play out the hand or fold at any point before the action reaches them by hitting the “Forward Fold” button. After folding, a player would immediately be moved to a new table with different players and new hole cards.

FastForward is currently in beta testing, with limited stakes and options for now. Stakes will start at $0.01/0.02; games can be found in the Party Poker lobby under the “FastForward” tab. FastForward is slated to include 6-max tables as well as heads-up play.

Just last week, it was announced that PokerStars completed the deal of purchasing Full Tilt Poker. The poker community found out about the completed deal thanks to online poker forums such as TwoPlusTwo and poker executives at both PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker have taken to the forums to release new information.

Lee Jones, a spokesman and executive at PokerStars, spoke out first on TwoPlusTwo by stating: “We’re delighted to announce that we have officially closed out deal with the U.S. DOJ as of today, August 9th. 90 days from today is November 6th, (yes, U.S. election day). Full Tilt Poker will be live no later than that day.”

Shyam Markus, a poker room manager at Full Tilt Poker, commented as well in another Full Tilt Poker post at TwoPlusTwo. Markus revealed that he posts under the name FTPDoug and he used this ID to answer questions that everyone has had about Full Tilt Poker.

In his post, Markus confirmed that Full Tilt Poker will be re-launching this year, at the latest in November. Markus also stated that the site may actually go live in October. Markus went on to state that even though Full Tilt Poker is owned by PokerStars, they will be managed separately and would become a ‘PokerStars’ site with a different look.

A few key points from Markus’ posts are that US players will still be able to log in and play for play money with their original Player IDs. The FTP site is also working on a .eu site and they are hoping to have it running as possible. FTP does not know if this site will be up and running as of re-launch.

The Poker Players Alliance (PPA) has been very busy trying to ensure that U.S. Full Tilt players will be fully repaid and also pushing for federal legislation.

While the rumor mill keeps churning in regards to whether Full Tilt players from the U.S. can expect their full account balances to be reimbursed by the U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ) or just the amount they deposited at the former 2nd-ranked online poker site, the PPA has been diligently involved in working on the players’ behalf to secure full repayment as well as lobbying for federal legislation.

The PPA wrote a letter late last week to the Asset Forfeiture and Money Laundering Section of the DoJ and offered assistance in the still undetermined remission process in order to facilitate full repayment of U.S. players. The missive was written by attorney Marc J. Zwillinger of the law firm ZwillGen PLLC on behalf of the PPA and promised the establishment of "a streamlined, victim-friendly process" to ensure that players’ frozen accounts as of Full Tilt’s shutdown last year be paid in full.

The main reasons cited for players to be made whole are that the settlement was brokered with full reimbursement as its intent, PokerStars was permitted to fully reimburse players following Black Friday with no arguments from the DoJ that this was impermissible, and that all non-U.S. players will receive their entire account balances when Full Tilt relaunches in November. Zwillinger’s letter also points out that players the world over were victims of deceit perpetrated by Full Tilt despite being assured that their funds were secure.

Let the rumors and speculation begin. Viktor Blom, best known in the online poker world as high stakes poker player “Isildur1,” is no longer a PokerStars pro. The news was first reported on Tuesday by our friends over at PokerNews-com, who discovered that Blom was no longer listed on the pro roster on PokerStars-com.

Blom was an online poker legend before most people even knew who he really was. He burst onto the scene in 2009 as an unknown under the Isildur1 screen name on Full Tilt Poker and was soon mixing it up in the nosebleed stakes cash games against the likes of Phil Ivey, Tom “durrrr” Dwan, and Patrik Antonius. Seemingly every day, the mystery Swede experienced wild swings that most players don’t even dream about. Up a million, down a million, up a few hundred thousand, down a few hundred thousand. According to PokerTableRatings-com, Isildur1 was involved in the ten largest pots in online poker history, winning four for a combined $3.5 million.

In December of that year, he lost over $4 million to CardRunners instructor Brian Hastings, who later told ESPN that fellow instructor Brian Townsend “analyzed a database of heads-up hands that Isildur1 had played and constructed ranges of what Isildur1 was doing in certain spots.” Townsend used that information to help Hastings in his battles against Blom. Full Tilt stripped Townsend of his prestigious “red pro” status for a month as a result.

Poker Stars is buying out Full Tilt Poker and claim they will pay back players soon, ending over a year of scandal and federal investigation into what officials are now calling a Ponzi scheme. But with hopes on the horizon that players will finally get their money back, and several states pushing to legalize online poker so United States players can legally play again, the official demise of Full Tilt Poker means the end of an era, and there are a few things that the poker community will miss about the disgraced giant.
