The online gaming community has certainly grown in leaps and bounds during the past few years. The ability to play poker games online has increased dramatically; high-speed Internet and a greater number of mobile apps partially contributing to such a climb. This has equated to a pronounced increase in revenue generation and the creation of new and innovative gaming platforms. Additionally, it seems that the number of gaming-related social media sites is indeed on the rise. While the allure and the attraction of online poker tournaments is certainly undeniable to millions of aficionados, what are this year's financial highlights and equally as important, how has the economics of online gaming influenced the demographic of the gamers themselves?

Big Figures, Bigger Games

As of 2012, the online poker industry (in global terms) was estimated to be worth
an estimated $417 billion dollars. That is quite a lot of poker chips. Although 2013 is not yet completed, many analysts feel that this year's revenue will increase yet further. This is all but essential in not only maintaining the thriving online atmosphere that has come to define these virtual games, but it may also be pivotal in convincing United States lawmakers to legalize the industry for their domestic market. Should this occur, the amount of revenue generated (and prizes won) will rise astronomically. It could soon be a foregone conclusion that the ability to play online casino games may never be more rewarding.

The Rise of the Mobile App

It has been shown that number of online gaming enthusiasts has risen by approximately five percent during the months of August and September. This is partially due to the rise in popularity of large, respectable sites. For example, those who play online poker at Bovada.lv and similar portals can expect increased payouts while enjoying unparalleled levels of security and enjoyment. The ability to play poker online at sites such as these has also been massively influenced by the increase in the number of mobile applications currently available. This is a primary reason why large investment firms view this industry as a lucrative and liquid opportunity .

These applications can be played on nearly any modern smartphone and with a simple blackjack or poker download platform, the ability to access these fun and rewarding variants has never been easier. As the number of smartphone users steadily increases, it can only be expected that the revenue generated from the corresponding influx of capital will likewise surge.

The Implications for the Gaming World

One of the likely results of this financial windfall will be a greater number of quality site emerging during the next two to three financial quarters. Likewise, games such as Texas Hold 'Em online, blackjack and slots will offer greater rewards. There may be increased signup bonuses, a greater number of available tournaments or bigger jackpots.

Similarly, the technology behind online gaming will also increase at a frenetic pace. The increased revenue that is generated will naturally be placed back into logistics, infrastructure and game play. The result will most certainly be more robust gaming platforms, highly interactive experiences and a better overall structure.

The Decline of the Physical Casino?

Many may wonder whether these profits will encroach upon the physical casino industry. While some in the past surmised that online games would overtake traditional gaming sites, no such phenomenon has been observed. Rather, the Internet has appealed to a younger and more technologically savvy generation. The appeal tends to fall between those aged twenty-one to forty-five. While indeed there may be a shift in the future, events such as the WSOP will continue to enjoy a wide audience and this will remain the case for quite some time.

So, it is clear to appreciate why the online gaming industry in 2013 is indeed a highly profitable platform. Barring a financial collapse such as we witnessed in 2007 and 2008, the momentum and the revenue generated is expected to increase with time. It will be very interesting to see what the future holds for the lucrative sector of online casinos.

And now you are dabbling in the dark arts… or Razz, as it’s otherwise known. Razz is basically Seven Card Stud played to the low, where the best possible low hand is the bicycle (or wheel) of Ace-Two-Three-Four-Five.

With this focus on low cards you are going to find yourself folding a good percentage of hands on third street, but that doesn’t mean you can’t come out a winner anyway – even if you’re not in the hand. Take the time to observe your opponents’ play.

Watch closely and you’ll start to spot certain tendencies and habits that will help you make critical decisions in later hands. Here’s what you need to be asking yourself as you study your opposition:

Are they coming-in with a raise every time? Or just calling?

How frequently do they raise?

How strong does their hand have to be to call? And to raise?

Stealing. Do they do it? How often?

As the bring-in, how often will they defend their bet? And when?

Will they chase a hand if they are behind?

What street do they tend to implode and fold on when chasing?

Are there any hands that they slow-play?

Will they check-raise or check-raise bluff? Where and when?

Incidentally, it’s a good idea to run this same slide rule over your own Razz play.

As Sun Tzu says, “If you know the enemy and know yourself you need not fear the results of a hundred battles.”

Tennis is a very competitive sport requiring physical and mental skills to win. Tennis players do have a shelf life due to the rigorous demands of this demanding sport and injuries tennis professionals get old and cannot keep up in the highly competitive events. The ruthlessness and determination exhibited by these professionals’ transfers well to the less physically demanding game of poker.
While the physical demands are not as taxing the game of pro poker does need a certain amount of stamina and fast decision making, something that tennis players definitely possess.

Examples include players such as Boris Becker who since he retired from the game of tennis is usually seen in the press box, inspiring television audiences around the world with is expert insight into the game. Poker has also been one of Becker’s revenue generators seeing him gain some impressive money at various tournaments. He has been on the upswing in his earnings from events such as the European Poker Tour where he has won around $100,000 so far.

Other professional poker players who were at one time up and coming tennis players Patrik Antonius and Patrick de Koster both of whom were injured and had to rethink their careers as tennis competitors. Both have been very successful in their new positions and have been able to live the good life because of it.

The other gentler side of the game is exposed by Rafael Nadal and Andy Roddick who have used their fame and success as tennis champions to play in poker tournaments for charity. Their celebrity status helps to advertise the game and often raises more money for charity in the process. Roddick’s , has set up an online poker tournament to raise money for abused and disadvantaged children.
Tennis has become much more popular and poker more accepted by the public making for a good fit for poker professionals and tennis pros.

Billionaire casino boss Sheldon Adelson is keeping his foot on the pedal in his desperate quest to squash online poker in the United States.

The owner of Las Vegas Sands Corp. reportedly just commissioned a study of four states in order to show that legalizing online gambling, including poker, is currently not too popular among voters.

According to Ralston Reports, the Tarrance Group, a well regarded national firm, recently completed a series of polls for the Las Vegas Sands chairman.

Surveys were conducted in California, Kentucky, Virginia, and Pennsylvania and “found overwhelming opposition to web poker.” The average distaste for casino games on the web between the four was a whopping 66 percent, with a margin of error of about four percent.

It’s unclear why those states were chosen, but the study said that they are “pro-gaming” states.

California is considered to be the most important state to have on board in an U.S. web poker market. It has 37 million people, tops in the country. However, the fact that voters are not found of online poker is not really the reason why efforts at legalization have failed there. Tribal groups, commercial interests and lawmakers have had an impossible time coming to a consensus.

Adelson has been challenging the online gambling industry because he said he is morally opposed to the idea of such games potentially being played in every household in America. Adelson is a staunch Republican, giving tens of millions to candidates he likes.

No one knows if that’s the complete picture of why he hates the idea of web gambling in the country. His casino company might just not be ready to venture into the space like some of his competitors are. That makes sense, since Las Vegas Sands has been doing very well from its brick-and-mortar business, most notably in Macau. Online gambling in the U.S. is a different animal, one that Sands might not be ready to conquer, and thus Adelson wants everything to slow down a bit so his firm has more time. It has not applied for an online gambling license in Nevada.

His moral position against web poker stems from his apparent fear that minors could gamble. Online poker experts say the risk of minors playing is low, but most agree it cannot be completely prevented. However, neither can minors playing in live casinos with fake IDs. In fact, Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem was recently fined more than $50,000 for underage gamblers at its property.

Despite Adelson’s efforts, licensed and regulated online poker is coming to America, albeit at a much slower pace than most had hoped for, or perhaps expected. Right now, only Nevada, Delaware and New Jersey have legalized web gambling. Nevada is already offering games, while New Jersey will start in late November. Delaware could begin this fall as well.

Federal efforts to legalize nationwide in one fell swoop are widely considered to be drawing dead these days. Adelson’s opposition definitely hasn’t helped, but it is very unlikely he was the reason why nothing ever came to fruition. There are many lawmakers on Capitol Hill who are very reluctant to authorize such a business and they didn’t need Adelson to tell them his thoughts.

Thus, a state-by-state patchwork will develop. Some think that Nevada and New Jersey will partner as soon as next year to combine player pools for web gambling.

It remains unclear if Las Vegas Sands will ever embrace online poker, but it would seem that eventually it would have to if online games are as important to the future of the casino industry as some say they are. Sands already offers mobile sports betting in Las Vegas, so in a sense, it is already dabbling in online gambling. It just is very particular about the kind it’s OK with.

The coolest feature about playing at Americas Cardroom is that everything is so easy. Players are automatically credited with their first deposit bonus, automatically enlisted into the Elite Rewards program. If anything should go wrong, there is 24-hour live support via email and live chat (which we have used and can confirm is excellent).

The poker software may not have all the bells and whistles that you may be able to find on some more animated online poker sites, but it is perfectly adequate to enjoy a potentially lucrative game of poker with some players of decent standard and know that you will get paid out if you win.
Update july 2013: AmericasCardroom just did a huge software update with a lot of improvements and can definitely compete with all other US facing poker rooms now.

Americas Cardroom deserves to become more popular because of the effort the site has put in to providing a decent level of integrity and service – something which some other sites find so difficult. A respectable bonus (and all the time in the world to clear it) and some value-added tournaments make Americas Cardroom a site that players from all around the world should try.

Sheldon Adelson, who seems to have made it his life’s mission to bad mouth the online poker and gambling industries, has made headlines again after commissioning a new study on gambling in the United States. The CEO of the Sands Group, one of the most powerful casino companies in the world, commissioned the Republican slanted Tarrance Group to poll over 2,000 residents of four states, namely California, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Kentucky.

The participants of the study were asked questions ranging from their opinions on live gaming in their states, to the expansion of casinos and the introduction of online poker.

A memorandum was issued this week regarding the findings of the study, which stated: “These key findings are based on telephone interviews with a total of N=2,216 ‘likely’ registered voters throughout these four state. Responses to this survey were gathered during the period between June-October, 2013. The margin of error associated with the sample for each of these studies is + 4.3% in 95 out of 100 cases.”

With regards to the question of online gambling, the study apparently found that over 60% of all those polled were opposed to the idea of online gambling. 72% of those polled in Virginia showed opposition to internet gambling, compared to 61% of Californians.

Dave Sackett who issued the memorandum on behalf of the Tarrance Group noted that the report “shows a universal opposition to any proposal that would legalize Internet gambling or internet poker.”

The study is already generating controversy as analysts say that it was not carried out in an objective manner. It was not clear, for example, who was actually polled and, for all intents and purposes, the respondents may all have been Republican voters, traditionally opposed to the idea of online gambling in their life views.

The study also showed that 60% of the respondents were in favor of live casino gambling as long as the revenues benefited their states.

Ultimate Poker, the first official legal online poker site in the US, also became the first to lose members of its team of sponsored pros. It was revealed this past week that “Team U” members Randy Dorfman and Tom Marchese opted to leave their deals with the company.

Ultimate Poker and Randy Dorfman agreed to a sponsorship deal back in June 2013, at the same time Gavin Griffin, Dan O’ Brien, Lauren Kling and Phil Collins signed up. Dorfman, who boasts over $1.4m in lifetime live earnings, was known as being a regular grinder on the site but it seems as though he was looking for a little more when it came to his relationship with Ultimate Poker.

“I have resigned from Ultimate Poker as their Team Pro. At this point in my life there are more important and creative things for me to be involved with. To have your ideas and experiences from the game I love fall on deaf ears while you bust your ass to build a game for a new Company just was extremely frustrating to me.” Dorfman posted to social media site Facebook. “I wish UP [Ultimate Poker] the best and I hope things do turn around for them. I met some great people there and hopefully the chemistry between all involved gets straighten out soon.”

While there has been no official announcement from Ultimate Poker, Dorfman also revealed that recently signed pro Tom Marchese has also exited the team.

As previously reported, Marchese was announced as a member of “Team U” just last month, in September 2013.

Neither Dorfman’s nor Marchese’s photos appear on Ultimate Poker’s 'Team U’ page, although currently, one can still find Tom Marchese’s “Team U bio.

It should also be noted that photos of original “Team U” pro Gavin Griffin are absent from the site as well.

Earlier this month, latest traffic statistics showed that the combined game traffic for WSOP-com and Ultimate Poker has hit a new high. The two are the first online poker rooms operating in the newly regulated Nevada market.

According to the new data from PokerScout, the two sites have had an average of 232 players within the first week of October. The initial peak was 227 players, which was after the launch of Ultimate Poker.

Currently, Ultimate Poker accounts for 65% of the entire traffic and has managed to be ahead of WSOP, many thanks to this month’s traffic boost.

WSOP is still in its initial rapid growth phase. Given that it is now past the soft launch and beginning to aggressively market its poker room on the Internet, strong growth is expected as the month advances.

Nevertheless, both the online poker sites have had their own share of teething problems. Ultimate Poker is yet to iron out all the version 2 software bugs, and WSOP has experienced geolocation technical hitches in addition to the restricted deposit options. While the player offerings and technology of these companies mature, the market should grow in a rapid way.

IntegerPoker is starting its life as a skin on the new Equity Poker Network (EPN) with a soft launch and a $3k freeroll this Sunday to test the poker client. It is mainly seeking to target regulated markets within the EU.

IntegerPoker is launching with an innovative variation on the rakeback theme for multi-table and Sit and Go tournaments. “Variback” provides a cash payment based on tournament performance and is designed to reduce “negative variance.”

The “VariZone” consists of the top 12% of finishing places outside the money. In a 100 player tournament with places 1-20 paid, the VariZone comprises places 21-32. Under the Variback scheme: “For every 10 tournaments that you finish within the VariZone you will receive 50% of your average Buy In back.”

The EPN is a non-profit collaborative network which eschews the standard business model in favor of a cooperative structure where skins share in network revenues. In September, Full Flush Poker became the first poker room to launch on the new network.

EPN poker rooms pay a flat $10k a month, although there is a “shark tax” for skins which suck out a disproportionate amount of profit from the player pool. The network uses software originally developed for the Chico Network. Swedish company Playsafe Holding AS now owns the rights to that software.

The Nevada Gaming Commission met Thursday in Las Vegas.

The issue: Five companies with applications for interactive gaming licenses needed deadline extensions because of a backlog of reviews of their systems for online poker play. Regulations impose a six-month limitation on previously approved licenses.

The vote: 5-0 in one consent vote

What it means: Two companies are operating live online poker sites — Station Casinos’ Ultimate Poker and Caesars Interactive’s World Series of Poker.

Five other companies have systems in the pipeline that were closing in on approval deadlines.

Extended to April were license applications for Las Vegas-based Boyd Interactive Gaming, a subsidiary of Boyd Gaming; GNLV Corp, operated by Golden Nugget; MGM Resorts Online, a subsidiary of MGM Resorts International; Z4Poker LLC, doing business as Z4Gaming; and Reno-based PNK LLC, doing business as M1 Gaming Reno though the Boomtown Reno Truckstop.

Daniel “Kid Poker” Negreanu clinched the 2013 World Series of Poker Player of the Year award today, making him the first-ever two time WSOP Player of the Year in WSOP history.

Negreanu put together an amazing run at World Series of Poker events this year including his victory at the WSOP APAC Main Event, six deep runs at the 44th Annual WSOP from Las Vegas, as well as his 25th place finish in the 2013 WSOP Europe Main Event and finally a top 8 finish in the ongoing WSOPE High Roller event.

The combination of steady results and his WSOP APAC Main Event victory was finally enough to overtake Matt Ashton, who won the $50k Poker Players Championship at the WSOP this summer and held the points lead headed into the start of the WSOP Europe.

Negreanu first won the WSOP Player of the year back in 2004 and now again in 2013.

A gleaming red Ferrari takes pride of place on the driveway of the gated mansion alongside an equally flashy Audi and a top-of-the-line Range Rover. A bottle of bubbly is on ice next to the hot tub.

Not bad for an ex-plumber aged 27. But this is normal life now for Sam Trickett who, after banking more than £12million, has become the second most successful poker player in history.

He knows full well he is the exception, the one in many millions who do make it big instead of ruining their lives with gambling addiction.

But as he prepares to sit down at a poker table next week for the highest stakes tournament ever held in the UK – there’s a £100,000 price tag just to bag a seat at the table – he reveals just how close he came to disaster.

In a losing streak at the end of 2009, he gambled away almost a quarter of a million pounds in six months. It pushed him to the brink of bankruptcy and for a time it lost him the woman he loved.

Sam says: “I had £250,000 in the bank, but that just meant I was gambling for bigger money because I thought I was invincible. Within six months I was down to my last £100,000.

We were supposed to be buying a house. We went down, had all the meetings and got a mortgage set up. But by the time we had the next meeting two weeks later I had lost £70,000.”

Despite the increasingly desperate ******situation, Sam kept his money troubles secret from his girlfriend of six years Natasha Sandhu, 26.

His family and his friends also thought his success in national and international poker tournaments was continuing.

Sam says: “I didn’t want anyone to know I was broke. I was ashamed. So whenever I went out I would buy a round of drinks for the lads or pay for the meal.

“I didn’t tell Tash I’d lost the money. I told her I didn’t want to buy the house because I didn’t like it. We were arguing all the time because I was being an idiot so we decided to break up.

“The whole year we were apart I never thought about having another girlfriend. I didn’t want one unless it was her.”

But, while many would find themselves sinking further and further into desperation and debt, Sam is one of the lucky few who found a way back.

There are an estimated 350,000 people in the UK suffering from gambling addiction, a figure that has shot up since the recession with more betting shops and online gaming than ever.

Every year in Britain we gamble an astonishing £7billion and it’s never been easier to lose a fortune.

Poker is hugely popular with thousands of punters winning – and of course losing – a few pounds at a time. But too many end up hooked on the thrill and they get into huge debt in the hope that just one more bet might turn everything around.

For Sam, a crucial turning point was landing sponsorship so he was no longer gambling his own money but still earning a sizeable share of the winnings.

“I was so relieved after my first big win – that took the pressure off,” he says. “I learned my lesson and I know how lucky I was.”

Sam’s first hope of fame and fortune was a career in football and at 17 he had trials with both Nottingham Forest and Sheffield United. But his dreams of success were shattered by two cruciate ligament injuries.

After working as a plumber for a friend, he trained as a gas fitter. He began playing poker on the side and quickly realised he was good at it.

“I never thought I was going to be an international poker superstar. I just saw it as a way to pick up some money quickly,” he says.
