Canadian poker pro Matt Marafioti has come under fire from the online poker community after allegations that he had been conspiring with Swedish poker player and IT expert Samer Rahman to take part in a hole-card hacking scheme were posted on TwoPlusTwo.

Speculation began last week when an anonymous poster submitted an alleged Skype conversation between Marafioti and Rahman in which they appeared to be discussing the logistics of hacking the computer of Will “molswi47” Molson so that Marafioti could access his hole cards.

“Let’s get molswi,” Marafioti allegedly said in the chat transcript, adding “I can access his computers and I think he will play me all day,” in reference to the need for someone to be able to get hold of a victim’s computer in order to download the software that would enable the scame to take place.

Since the conversation was posted, Marafioti have had very different responses to allegations that they were conspiring to cheat. Marafioti explained that he and Rahman were friends, but the conversation had clearly been “doctored”, while Rahman denied that they were even acquaintances.

The U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ) website is actively recruiting an administrator to process claims made by Full Tilt players from the U.S.

The Black Friday indictments that resulted in U.S. poker players being shut out from playing at major poker sites put an estimated 50,000 poker players from America out of work–some of whom have taken up residence in foreign countries to continue playing at sites like PokerStars and PartyPoker. The recent settlement between PokerStars, the DoJ and Full Tilt that will reimburse players who have had money frozen on the site since last year will create at least one job–albeit not as a player. The DoJ has posted an ad to hire a “Claims Administrator–Full Tilt Poker.”

German poker pro Marvin Rettenmaier may not be a household name, but his 2012 tournament season has definitely been one to talk about. Back in May, he won the World Poker Tour Season X Championship, securing a $287,784 payday for himself, which is certainly worth bragging about. His follow-up? Last week, he hit the tables in the WPT Season XI debut event, the WPT Meric Cyprus Classic and took the top spot there, too. This makes him the first (and likely to be only for some time) player to secure back-to-back tournament victories in the WPT.

Here's how the action went down at the Merit Crystal Cove Hotel and Casino in Cyprus. After some very exciting play where the way-behind Joseph El Khoury managed to fight back and earn himself fifth place through two strategic double-ups, Rettenmaier faced down Artur Voskanyan, a Russian pro who's seen a modicum of success before this event but was now looking at the biggest payday of his career. The two players had been sparring back and forth over the length of the final table a bit but had never had a full-blown confrontation.

That soon changed: on the second hand of heads-up play, Voskanyan called Rettenmaier's all-in push with A10 off-suit. The German held J9. The flop pushed Rettenmaier into the lead with 984, giving him the lead and despite the fact that the Q on the board gave Voskanyan a straight draw, a 7 on the river meant that Rettenmaier was now the winner.

However, unless he's got a time machine and teleportation, it's unlikely tha the'll get to claim a third title in a row: only 16 players remain at the WPT Parx Open Poker Classic, taking place in Bensalem, PA.

With a half-month left in California’s legislative session, the proposed online poker bill may land in the muck due to lack of agreement among gaming interests.

A major culprit in the bill’s probable failure in advancing are the Indian tribes who still can’t seem to agree on whether online poker will benefit or harm the existing revenue stream of their land-based casinos. Some tribes support Sen. Roderick Wright’s proposal to legalize poker in the country’s largest state. Other tribes are in favor of the concept, but are still pushing for amendments to the legislation as its currently written. While yet another faction of tribal groups are in total opposition to the idea.

"It doesn’t look good," Sen. Wright (D-Inglewood) said to the Press-Enterprise of the prospects of SB 1463 garnering approval before the fast-approaching Aug. 31 deadline.

When the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act was signed into law almost five years ago, it was believed that the online gambling industry was destined to quickly fade out in the United States. Despite several years of government efforts to prosecute operators and payment processors, online poker and casino gambling continues to thrive in the US.

Leading online poker reviewer PokerSites-com announced that while US-based traffic rapidly declined in the wake of Black Friday, there has been a steady increase in US-based viewers at their site over the last six months.

"We are seeing more and more people realizing that online gambling is here to stay and are more comfortable accessing online poker now that that US states are legislating to clear up any gray areas," Robert Stern, Communications Director at PokerSites-com said. "PokerSites-com has been online since 1995 and we have carefully watched the fluctuations and trends of online gambling -- and online poker in particular -- to always provide players with the latest legal information and to ensure that they always have access to an impartial resource on where the best poker sites are."

In fact, millions of Americans are still gambling online and are spending upwards of $4 billion a year on the sites that will still accept them. Internationally, Internet gambling accounted for $32.8 billion in revenue in 2011.

If any of you poker players in the United States have been looking for something to do since online poker disappeared (well, it’s not totally gone, but you get the point), you may be in luck. The U.S. government is looking for qualified people to take on the gigantic task of returning millions of dollars back to Full Tilt Poker customers.

An employment notice for a Claims Administrator was recently posted on the website for the United States Attorney’s Office (USAO) of the Southern District of New York, an administrator who would specifically handle the Full Tilt case. It would be an interesting contract for a poker player, should one be fortunate enough to get the business. One the one hand, you would be assisting the government, the “enemy” responsible for the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) of 2006 and Black Friday of 2011. This is the entity responsible for all but taking online poker away from us. But on the other hand, you would get to make whole (hopefully) all your fellow online poker players and help everyone bring some sort of closure to the whole Full-Tilt-stole-player-funds mess.

This isn’t a job for a lone independent contractor sitting in his home office. The U.S. government estimates that there is somewhere around 1.3 million players who are owed money by Full Tilt Poker, with $159 million waiting to be distributed. The USAO is looking for a Claims Administrator who “will design and execute a process to solicit, receive and evaluate claims, and to process payments, for losses incurred by U.S. victims” of Full Tilt Poker.

The online poker gaming community in the US believed that online gambling will disappear from the US when the US federal government implemented the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) in 2006. While this law did not criminalize the act of betting on online poker games, it definitely made it illegal for US banks and financial institutions to process poker-related funds. US lawmakers believed that US citizens will be discouraged from playing poker online because no bank would process their funds.

Although several prominent online poker companies such as Party Poker and several online payment processors withdrew from the US market after the UIGEA was passed, prominent online poker companies such as Full Tilt Poker, PokerStars, and others stayed back in the US market and devised a wide range of ways to fool US banks into processing poker-related funds so that US poker players could play their favorite games of poker.

The nominees for the next British Poker Awards ceremony are already unveiled. Ten different awards will be distributed during this great event scheduled to take place on September 17 on board of the boat HMS. There will be the title of the best player in tournament, the best online poker player, the best cash game player, the poker personality of the year, the best poker forum, the best British tournament, the best poker league, the best player on the international level as well as the title of player of the year. At first glance, some candidates are nominated for two different titles. To this end, there will be Sam Trickett who will compete for the trophy of the best player in tournaments as well as the best cash game player. Chris Moorman and Chris Brammer are also selected as the best tournament players in live and online. And Vicky Coren and Neil Channing both covet the title of poker personality of the year and the best blogger.

The public will have the last word. And a priori, the choice will be difficult because the list has many well known poker players. For the title of Person of the Year, for example, the public will have to vote between Coren, Chaning, Kara Scott, Liv Boeree or Andrew Feldman. Regarding the title of the best tournament, you have to choose between the Sky Poker Tour Grand Final, The Dawn Dusk Tille Grand Prix, the Grosvenor United Kingdom Poker Tour Goliath, the Ireland Poker Tour or the Nottingham Amateur Poker Association and the Tour's World Championship.

Canadian comedian Gerry Dee has just become the latest celebrity sponsored by PokerStars to promote the online poker behemoth. The 43 year-old started his comedic career back in 2003 after leaving his teaching job and the award winning stand-Up comic currently stars in his own show called Mr. D.

In the show, Gerry Dee plays the part of schoolteacher Gerry Duncan, inspired by Dee’s ten years spent as a high-school physical education teacher. Talking about his latest deal with PokerStars-net, Gerry Dee commented:

“I’m better at math and statistics than the teacher you see on TV, so I’m not a bad poker player. I’m no pro but I’ve always been a bit of a poker buff. I really admire the skill it takes to compete at the top level. I’m excited about this partnership and am looking forward to improving my game!”

Gerry Dee’s new PokerStars responsibilities will see him appearing in a series of TV commercials promoting free online poker tournaments awarding $20,000 packages to the 2013 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA) in January. Gerry Dee will also be present at the tournament series in the Bahamas and will be making a TV special about his experiences at the Atlantis Resort and Casino situated on the stunning Paradise Island.

We were just talking about Marvin Rettenmaier and his stunning back-to-back World Poker Tour wins on Tuesday and guess what? That's made him the new leader in the Global Poker Index's Player of the Year standings. His total score right now is 802.42 compared to second placer David Baker's 715.90.

The Global Poker Index player of the year tracks the year-to-date performance of the top 1000 players who participate in live poker tournaments around the world as of the day it's published. Their weekly standings are based on their cash earned and positioned achieved in qualifying tournaments. The exact specifics of the scoring are kept a bit mom, but each player’s individual GPI PoY score is an aggregate of scores in events during the calendar year.

Zynga Inc. has started to lobby for real-money Internet gambling. It is doing so in Washington, D.C. and California, according to the Wall Street Journal.

However, bills in both places are huge long shots at the present time. Some industry insiders say a national online poker measure is perpetually drawing dead. California is set to flunk again amidst years of trying, but most think some compromise will eventually be brokered in the Golden State.

Opponents of California’s web poker proposal that’s currently on the table say that it would let outside interests take advantage of the state. Zynga is based in San Fransisco.

Most Internet gaming companies prefer a federal regime, but are hedging their bets on the viability of a state-by-state patchwork. Nevada has legalized and is on the verge of such an industry, but Zynga has not applied there, although it seems likely it will do so eventually.

Often at gamersyndrome-com and offline I get question about the validity of playing online poker to hone your skills for real life. There are a couple angles to this answer as well as the story of Chris Moneymaker the first person to win the World Series Of Poker through by winning a seat through an online poker tournament, it has since paved the way for many others who have won seats from online tournament’s to play in the World Poker Series tournament’s in real life.

Lets first start with Playing online and how I think it would benefit any player in real life. These days playing online you have time to read stats, look at you hand and pull up the strength of the hand in charts, applications online etc.. all without showing your bluff or strength. This is a huge advantage when learning how to play poker as most professionals will know the second they look at a hand how strong the hand is, the odds of hitting or winning with that particular hand.

The latest trend for online poker players is ‘fast’ poker or ‘speedy’ poker or ‘rush’ poker or whatever the term used it’s the latest game of choice for online poker fans. The problem for operators is not so much rolling out the game but giving the game a name that doesn’t sound like all the others. The race to clone the fast fold poker craze and find a suitable handle for its introduction seems to be a issue for those who are coming into the fray late.

Italy has decided to introduce the product known as fast fold poker. “Poker veloce” is the term that is being used by Italy’s regulator AAMS, which recently approved the game into their newly regulated and prosperous market. Fast fold for money enables players to moved immediately to a new table after each hand. It has been suggested that fast fold poker is going to have pool of players maxing out at around five thousand. Each player can have more than one entry with a maximum amount for a buy-in set at one thousand Euros. These are more or less the same rules for normal cash games.

It may be 888 Poker´s birthday, but it is the online poker room who are giving away the presents, with more than $10,000 in freerolls over the next few days.

Back in 1997, a relatively small, real money gambling site – Casino-on-Net – was launched by the Antiguan-based company, Virtual Holdings Limited. The popularity on the innovative (at the time) casino site grew quickly and, since its launch, more than 13 million people worldwide have downloaded the casino software.

In 2002, the company increased its online presence with the release of the Reef Club Casino and Pacific Poker. Pacific Poker was rebranded as 888 Poker when the company expanded its portfolio to include bingo and sports betting over the next few years and, retaining its innovative approach to providing players with a superlative poker experience – now sits as the third most popular online poker room.

Despite a sluggish economy, casinos continue to open in the United States at a torrid pace. State budget shortfalls have led to new and expanded casino development to fill in the gaps with tax revenue. As a result, states that had previously been absent of card rooms are becoming some of the biggest poker destinations in the country.

Poker, once relegated to the back rooms and given very little floor space, is now front and center in many casino properties. In some parts of the country, poker is actually the primary source of revenue for a gambling facility.

A decade ago, depending on your location, you could be a plane ride away from the nearest live action game. But these days, more often than not, a low-stakes no-limit hold’em table isn’t much more than a tank of gas away, if not in your backyard.

Party Poker has finally joined the elite group of online poker sites that offer high-speed variants of online poker by launching its own variant of high-speed poker called FastForward Poker. FastForward Poker bears a striking similarity to high-speed online poker variants launched by iGame, PokerStars, and Microgaming. FastForward Poker players can play hundreds of extra hands per hour than they normally can while playing other variants of online poker. As soon as players join a game of FastForward Poker, they form part of a pool of players and are allotted a table. Players get a new table and a fresh hand whenever they fold, totally eliminating the need to wait for tables and hands and speeding up the game considerably.
