According to reports from Variety Magazine, the new gambling film starring Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake will depict the shadowy past of abysmally regulated online poker — and could loosely parallel the plot of the 1998 film Rounders.

Runner, Runner, which is slated for 2013 on IMDB-com, will reportedly involve Timberlake’s character traveling to Costa Rica to reclaim his tuition money that he was cheated out of on a poker site owned by Affleck’s character.

On Saturday, Shaun Deeb won his fourth PokerStars Spring Championship of Online Poker title in just 10 days — defeating 85 in the $2,000 H.O.R.S.E. However, he doesn’t think his record-breaking run is that special.

“It’s not as sick as everyone is making it out to be,” he told Card Player. “All fields were under 100 people and amazing structures. A lot of [my opponents] aren’t full-time mixed-game players.”

His first three wins this month came in variants of stud.

Deeb, who is playing from Mexico, said he would take Viktor Blom’s 2012 performance over his “any day” because his fields were tougher. Blom won back-to-back events, outlasting a combined 8,700 players.

It was a busy day on PokerStars as the 2012 Spring Championship of Online Poker began the last of its events. Players of all bankrolls and skill levels took to the tables to try to win a portion of the massive guarantees set aside for the three Main Events alone. There was a big chance for online poker fame and fortune on the line, and men and women alike were attempting to grab it.

Meanwhile, the Women's Sunday was in full swing, as usual. Other women's events were running as well, including the Women's Poker League, which will be awarding more monthly cash prizes and freeroll tickets at the end of the month in all three divisions. And who can forget about the newest addition to the women's lineup? The $11 Women's Tuesday will roll around again in a few days with 6-max NLHE action and a $1K guarantee.

Back to today's action, let's take a look at the final numbers:

Total players: 204
Prize pool: $10,200.00
Paid finishers: 36

TEENS playing online poker for hours on end have youth workers worried that bad gambling habits could be on the cards.

With research revealing higher rates for at-risk gambling among young people and an increase in the popularity of poker, sports betting and online gambling, last week's Responsible Gambling Awareness Week was geared towards youth education.

Melbourne Citymission gambling prevention worker Talia Okten hosted an education forum on Friday for young African men living in Melbourne's west.

She said the forum was prompted by a growing concern about the young men aged 15-25 she works with, some spending entire days on social networking sites playing mock poker.

A bill in Delaware that would legalize online poker and expand other forms of gambling in the state has been voted out of committee and sent to a House vote, The Associated Press reported on Friday.

The governor’s office told Card Player in March that it would take up the issue in order for its gaming industry to remain competitive in the region.

“Our industry is on the severe defensive,” said Brian Selander, Chief Strategy Officer to Gov. Jack Markell. He added that the bill has a good chance of passing: “Delaware moves quickly, and we tend not to fight all that much.”

The Delaware Gaming Competitiveness Act of 2012 was introduced on May 9.

Several weeks ago, a petition signed by US online poker players, entitled “We the People”, was sent to the White House to demand changes in current legislation which still makes it difficult for millions of Americans to play their favorite game online.

Organizers of the petition didn’t expect any major changes to current laws based on their demands, but it was important for them to get the message across. While the President didn’t make any commitments to changes (considering that it’s election year), it was understood from the response received from the White House that no doors are shut on the possibility of far reaching changes.

The Colorado Gaming Association has drafted a bill that would aim to legalize online gaming in the state, the group’s executive director Lois Rice told Card Player Tuesday.

The coalition of the state’s casinos considered introducing an Internet poker proposal this year, but had its hands full with another gaming-related issue.

Rice said the Association doesn’t have any formal plans yet for introducing it during the next legislative session, which beings in January 2013. However, she said that online gaming “will be an issue in Colorado” next year.

The office of House Speaker Frank McNulty said that the legislature hasn’t yet heard about any push from the Gaming Association.

On September 22nd 2011, the Poker Players Alliance took advantage of a government promotion titled “We the People” to create a petition for online poker. The government promotion allowed US residents to create petition on a subject they are passionate about and if the petition received 5,000 signatures then it would be given a response by the government. The PPA online poker petition received 5,000 signatures in just three days and reached almost 10,000 signatures by the finish. The petition has now received a response from the US government, some eight months later.

In an official response, Brian Deese, Deputy Director of the National Economic Council has written on behalf of the Obama administration stating, to sum it up in a nutshell, “that it is up to individual states to decide whether to permit the activity.”
