Expected value serves as the basis for most non-psychological poker strategies. It is the positive or negative outcome of a play or strategy if it is consistently used over the long haul. Understanding expected value is key to becoming a poker player who is successful, whether you play online or if you sit in a brick and mortar casino on a nightly basis.
Let's say that you were the type of player who played any two suited pocket cards and you consistently chased that draw all the way to the river, that play would more than likely have a negative expected value. Yes, you'd win on occasion, but the numbers over the long haul would show that you were losing more money than you were gaining.
You have two clubs in your hand and there are 2 on the flop. So when you figure out your "outs," you know that only 4 are missing out of a possible 13. So, you have 9 cards out of a 47 unseen cards that can still help you. This would give you odds of 47:9 or when simplified, 5.2:1. This tells you that approximately every 6 times you try the exact same hand you will lose a little over 5 times and win once.
Take the time to understand your cards' odds and pot odds on every hand. That allows you to compare them to see if calling or raising at any given time is profitable over the long run.
Think you’ve got Expected Value down and looking to try out your skills in the biggest event the game has? You can play in Bovada's online qualifiers for the 2012 World Series of Poker Main Event for as little as $1!

PADDY Power chief executive Patrick Kennedy insisted yesterday that the internet bookie is not in danger of being left behind in the United States as a number of states there move closer to legalising online poker.
Mr Kennedy said the bookie remains in discussions with a number of potential partners there. It's still awaiting approval from the Nevada Gaming Commission for a licence to supply and operate mobile betting equipment in the state, home to Las Vegas. The state is due to issue the first online poker licences next month.
But as other states including New Jersey and California mull legalising online poker, internet betting firms such as London-listed Bwin have been teaming up with casino giants including MGM Resorts in anticipation of new laws.

One of California’s top gaming regulators said Friday that the success of Nevada’s upcoming intrastate online poker industry is “heavily dependent on prayer.”
Nevada has just 2.5 million residents and about 4 million visitors per month. The regulations would let tourists play.
California Gambling Control Commissioner Richard Schuetz was skeptical of the Silver State’s model during his introductory remarks at Friday’s Internet Gaming Symposium at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. The day-long conference covered a wide range of regulatory topics.

As Facebook Inc cashes in on its Initial Public Offering, other web-based companies such as Zynga Inc. have hitched a ride onto the rise of the social media giant by developing lucrative online games. With 35 million active monthly users, some of which buy virtual chips, Zynga Poker lays dormant as a potential powerhouse in a real-money online poker market.
Facebook snags a 30-percent cut from Zynga, which represents 12 percent of the site’s revenue. In March, Zynga announced it would do some business stag in possible preparation for real-money gambling.

As the Full Tilt Poker community and the US poker industry as a whole await the purchase of the Tapie rejected site by PokerStars, it would seem that yet another spoke may have just been inserted into the wheel of progress for Full Tilt Poker. This spoke in the wheel is nothing but the new tax impositions that Spain is putting on its online poker rooms – of which PokerStars is one. These unexpected taxes will require all online poker rooms operating in Spain to pay back taxes. This works up to different sums for the many poker rooms functioning in the country and unfortunately PokerStars seems to have a huge unexpected debt on its hands.

Belgium is a growing country in the middle of online poker. The country is best known for live poker tournaments that took place on many times at Ostend Casino and Dinant. There are among others the Ostend Poker War whose second edition was held in January. But online poker is relatively new and the Gaming Commission of Belgium is rather strict on legalizing poker game. On Tuesday, May 15, the Commission published a list of online poker sites that was banned for non-compliance with the Belgian regulation of gambling. In all, 30 sites were seen in this list of illegal poker sites that was sent to the four major ISPs in Belgium to let them block immediately their inflows and outflows. Among these blacklisted sites, there is Partypoker, BetClick, Bwin, Betfair, William Hill and 888. The reason of this ban is the non filling of the requirements of the Commission on guarantees of repayment of the funds of players.

Carbon Poker is at it once again with another excellent promotion for all of the online poker players out there, but this one is quite a bit different than anything from their past promotions. The idea behind Carbon’s newest promotion is that they are going to reward the players who are consistently playing at their site by giving away some great bonuses based on who can be the “Last Man Standing”. The promotion will run over a 60 day span starting on May 1st all the way until the 29th of June, and is based off the number of VIP Points that players earn.
How players are rewarded is by seeing who can last the longest by consistently meeting goals based on earning VIP Points each day. To start the promotion you only have to earn 50 VIP Points per day, but the number will increase after about 3-5 days (depending on how far into the promotion you are). After 50 points per day players will then have to earn 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, 350, 500, and 750 points all the way through May. When June begins the number bumps up to 1000 points per day, and the final day of the promotion will be 25000 points in one day!
The rewards will be incredibly nice for the last players remaining in the promo, as the final 50 players left standing will split up $27,950, with $6k going to first place and $4k going to second place. There will also be a ton of freerolls given away to players as well! The only break that players will get during this incredible grind is three days of their choice, which will not count against them. After 45 days though, players are not allowed to miss any days.
This promotion has the potential to make some players some serious money, especially if they are strong multi-tablers and play consistently on Carbon Poker. Don’t forget to go to their site to opt-in for the Last Man Standing promotion.

Three-time World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) champion Dan ‘djk123’ Kelly has added a Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP) title to his resume after taking down event #29, a $109 buy-in plus Rebuys (medium) No-Limit Hold’em Big Antes tournament, for $73,040.06. he Australian had to outlast 1,659 other players to collect the largest chunk from the $491,400 prize pool – which was way above the $300,000 guarantee – while 216 players, including PokerStars‘ Team Pro member Chad Brown (209th for $540.54), made the money.
However, no one could halt Kelly’s path to glory as the Melbourne youngster added another online title to his ever-growing PokerStars collection as just 19 entrants made it into Day 2 – although the champion came close to exiting during level 31 on Day 1 before taking down a huge pot with Big Slick against the queens of Israel’s ‘Killer_ooooo’ when an ace on the flop took the eventual winner back into third place.

This could be the next big boom for online poker. Can you imagine the people that play poker at Zynga actually playing with real money.
Zynga poker with real money will be bigger than all other poker rooms combined.

The state of Illinois wants to legalize online poker and they want to do it fast – at least faster than any other state in the US. At least this is what, John Cullerton, a Democrat and Senate President is proposing in his letter. According to John Cullerton, the President of the Senate, “Certain forms of iGaming, especially poker, rely on large pools of potential players, and states that move swiftly to design a system that captures the widest audience of participants will have an advantage in terms of long-range success. The goal is to make the state nimble enough to adjust to new Internet gambling approaches.”

After nearly eight months, the Obama administration finally responded Friday to the American people's online petition to license and regulate Internet poker.
Brian Deese, deputy director of the National Economic Council and a special assistant to the president on economic policy, issued a four-paragraph response on the issue. The first paragraph was introductory and the final paragraph a short conclusion, leaving two paragraphs with any meat to them.
The second paragraph acknowledged that many Americans play online poker and that there is no federal law preventing them from doing so. It goes on to say that it's up to each state to determine whether it wishes to authorize online poker. That's a confirmation of the green light given by the Justice Department in December for states to move ahead on the issue.

Poker players who signed an online petition about online poker in the United States this week received a response from the White House on the issue this week.
In a response titled “What We Have to Say About Online Poker,” Brian Deese, Deputy Director of the National Economic Council, outlines the position of the administration of President Barack Obama on online poker.
The response is what many expected in an election year in the U.S. — keeping doors open for legislation that would regulate online poker, but stopping short of endorsing any such legislation.
