The Coalition to Stop Internet Gambling — backed by GOP donor and casino owner Sheldon Adelson — hired the lobbying firm Squire Patton Boggs, according to disclosures filed Tuesday.
The group is lobbying in support of the Restoration of America’s Wire Act, which would renew federal restrictions on online gambling.
It would reinstate the original interpretation of the Wire Act, which was used to prosecute early Internet gambling such as online poker. The Justice Department changed its interpretation in 2011 to say the law should not be used to go after online gambling, except traditional sports betting.
The legislation has been introduced in the House and Senate and is cosponsored by a pair of GOP presidential candidates in the Senate — Lindsey Graham (S.C.) and Marco Rubio (Fla.).

The laws regarding online gambling in South Africa are complicated. According to the National Gambling Act of 2008, online gambling is permitted, but only with an operator that has been issued with an online gambling license by the Department for Trade and Industry (DTI).
Scared of the competition, brick-and-mortar casinos launched a legal challenge to the Act, which is still waiting to be resolved. Consequently no online casino or online poker licenses have been issued, and the only legal online action that is currently available in South Africa is through a handful of licensed sports books.
The situation is further complicated by the “opinion” of the DTI´s Chief Director of Policy and Legislation – MacDonald Netshitenzhe – who not only believes that gambling is immoral, but who refuses to issue any more online gambling licenses because (in his mind) the negative social consequences far outweigh the benefits.

GVC, headed by Scottish born Kenny Alexander, said it is considering its options regarding Bwin but there was no certainty it would make a new offer.
The announcement comes just a few days after after Bwin accepted a £900 million offer from 888 Holdings.
GVC had made a £908m approach, equivalent to 110 pence per share, for Bwin earlier in July backed by Canada's Amaya.
However Bwin said it had accepted the 888 offer as GVC's proposal had additional execution risks and the premium it offered was not enough for the board to recommend it.
Michael Campbell, analyst at Northland Capital Partners, said GVC is likely to come back with a larger offer.
He said: "For GVC to win that business, they're really going to have to come back with a quite a bit of a competitive bid, in my own view, and if it's south of 115 [pence], 120 [pence] I can't see shareholders voting in favour of a GVC deal."
The online gaming industry has seen a flurry of M&A activity as firms expand in order to offset the impact of increasing taxes and tighter regulation.
GVC's joint bid for Bwin, a company more than triple its size, would have involved breaking up the firm into units that could then be separately absorbed by GVC and Amaya.
Reports have suggested GVC could try to making a bid for Bwin on its own and without the support of Amaya.
Mr Campbell said he would be surprised if GVC could land the deal without the backing of another company.

The Fairfield City Council approved the new city ordinance at its meeting Tuesday night, which would prohibit “simulated gambling devices.” The council approved the first reading of the ordinance and discussed the issue during its July 7 meeting.
The new ordinance takes the place of a temporary moratorium on simulated gambling put in place in Fairfield in 2013. That ordinance was set to expire on Sept. 3.
The council defined a “simulated gambling device” as “any device that is available to play or operate a computer simulation of any game, where the play or operation of the device may deliver or entitle the person or persons playing or operating the device to a payoff or potential payoff...” according to the city staff report.
Many Internet sweepstakes cafes, sometimes called “cyber cafes,” offer these gambling games, which often mimic the experience of slot and video poker machines, according the report.
“Carefully designed to take advantage of state sweepstakes laws and to avoid state antigambling laws and gambling licensing restrictions, these businesses advertise and sell a product — usually Internet time or long-distance telephone minutes — that are of minimal interest to the customer,” the report reads.

The city of Fairfield has approved a ban on computerized gambling, citing complaints regarding an Internet sweepstakes cafe in the city.

Bwin, which went on the block last year, accepted a cash and stock deal worth almost 900 million pounds from online casino and poker firm 888 this month, shunning an earlier 908-million-pound offer from GVC and Canada's Amaya Inc (AYA.TO) due to execution risk concerns.
The tussle for Bwin is the latest in a flurry of M&A activity in the industry, a trend likely to continue as firms expand to help offset increasing taxes and tighter regulation in Britain.
Bwin, which has struggled with the decline of regulated poker markets in Europe, confirmed on Monday that it had received a new offer from GVC and said it would make an announcement when appropriate.
"Whilst we believe the acquisition of Bwin would add value for GVC shareholders, and for Bwin shareholders represents a 12p (10 percent premium), in our view over the long term 888 would add more value," analysts at Panmure Gordon wrote in a note.
GVC said it would finance the new deal through a combination of new GVC shares and a 400-million-euro ($443 million) senior secured loan from Cerberus Capital.

Positive Aspects of Trump’s Newfound Hobby
Donald has a snowflake’s chance in hell to be elected president of the United States, but this campaign provides him with a chance to speak his mind. One thing that has already made the list of topics worth debating is online gambling and the potential changes to existing legislation. Given his tight connections with the casino industry in general and online gambling in particular, Trump is likely to push for changes.
He is one of the few supporters of legalizing online gambling in the GOP and definitely the most vocal one. With so many American states trying to make ends meet, the capital generated by online gambling is no longer a source of money to ignore. Trump’s motto is “go big or go home” and he is very likely to make bold statements and aim much higher than any of his political counterparts. Not even a bill legalizing online gambling nationwide would come as a surprise.

That's very interesting.
The United Kingdom-based Sega studio is best known for its work on the Total War series of strategy games, which combine an epic scale with a jaw-dropping degree of visual authenticity. The original Halo Wars attempted to translate real-time strategy gaming on the Xbox 360 console, so it's fair to say that there's a good creative fit here.
We don't know much about Halo Wars 2 yet. It's presumably a co-publishing deal with Sega, which owns Creative Assembly. That marks a first for the traditionally Microsoft-exclusive Halo series. We also know that it's coming to Windows 10 and Xbox One in fall 2016.

The study, based on surveys of 2,100 people and interviews with both gaming operators and gamblers, found 28 per cent of youth aged 12 to 17 who played casino- style games moved to spending more time and money on real gambling. A third of adolescent game players, and 15 per cent of adults, believed playing would increase their chances when gambling.
The study said: "The Internet has changed the way that gambling is provided, and social media offers a highly accessible platform to promote products... Games can be problematic in their own right and regulators and game operators should consider further actions to protect vulnerable consumers."
