Would you like to know what a 50-year-old bottle of scotch tastes like? Well, you can easily find out if you’re willing to dish out $1,100 for a single shot of a rare version of Glenfiddich at the Casa Fuente Spirits Society within the Caesar’s Palace shopping forum.
The bottle of scotch is very rare and according to the Las Vegas Sun, there are only 12,000 circulating around the world and only 6 in the United States. One of those very bottles sold recently for an astounding $38,000 at a recent auction to one very wealthy bidder.
According About-com, these bottles come from two separate oak casks; one was distilled in 1955 in Europe and the other in 1957 in the U.S. Scotch lovers proclaim that these bottles offer a very unique and delicate flavor combining the essences of fruit, tobacco, cinnamon, orange marmalade among other explosive flavors.
The Casa Fuente cigar store within the Caesar’s Palace shopping forum is the lucky retailer who is currently housing the unique bottle, which was personally presented to the shop by Glenfiddich’s own Mitch Bechard, who happens to be their global ambassador.
If you enjoy drinking scotch, then I can see how this experience could be very well worth it in case you should have a couple thousand dollars lying around. Maybe you’ll hit it big at the Blackjack tables in Vegas or hey, you could always use your Bodog winnings to score a taste or two of that velvety scotch.

After Elton John and his husband David Furnish graced the cover of US Weekly magazine, with their infant son Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John, there was an outcry after the above photo of Harps Stores, an Arkansas-based supermarket chain, censoring the magazine was tweeted by a woman named Jennifer Huddleston on Tuesday, who wrote, 'This was taken at my local grocery store. I was shocked and horrified. Can you help bring attention to this,' she tweeted.
Harps had placed a placard with the message 'Family Shield. To protect young Harps shoppers' – something often reserved for pornographic magazines – over the recent issue of Us Weekly. The photo was then sent around the Interwebs and the store received call after call from outraged people.
Now, the company's President Kim B. Eskew has issued the following statement:
"We have received a number of comments regarding an incident in our Mountain Home store involving the current issue Us Weekly Magazine depicting Elton John, David Furnish and their newborn son. I would like to explain how this happened. For many years we have provided each of our stores with shields which can be used at the manager's discretion to cover the front of magazines when they receive complaints from our customers regarding either the photo on the cover of the magazine or the titles of articles contained within the magazine. Sometimes those photos might be sexually provocative or too revealing. The magazine article titles might also be too suggestive for some customers. In this case our store manager received some complaints, and as has been our custom, placed the shield over the cover of the magazine. When we began receiving complaints at our corporate office, we reviewed the magazine in question, removed the shield and are selling the magazine in all our locations today without any shield. Our true intention is not to offend anyone in our stores and this incident happened at just one of our 65 locations, which when brought to our attention, we reversed."
GLAAD told RadarOnline.com they were among those who complained and contacted Harps corporate office and were told the shields were put over the magazine cover at this store after several customers complained.
So far, no comment has been made from Sir Elton John or Furnish about the debacle. Zachary is the first child for 62-year-old John and 48-year-old Furnish.
One of the biggest Investment Banking Firms in the world, Goldman Sachs, reportedly has been counting on legalized online gambling in the United States since June of 2009. A report has been released were the banking institution crunched numbers with a few different scenarios that would become tangible once online poker and gambling becomes legal. Foreseeing what the US would look like with legalized online gambling is a huge boost to those hoping for some support and quite frankly some strong backing from banking institutions which could possibly sway the Federal Government to reconsider their stance.
In their report, Goldman Sachs determined that legalized online poker in the US would be worth as much as $3 billion annually and with the government in trillions of dollars worth of debt, this added income would make a big difference. Isn’t it funny when you think about the fact that along with Goldman Sachs some other financial institutions added to the US debt when they asked for financial bail out last year?
Late last year, lawmakers in Massachusetts fumbled the expanded gambling issue, and House Speaker Robert DeLeo took steps on Friday to ensure that does not happen again. DeLeo replaced some top lawmakers with others more supportive of expanded gambling.
DeLeo has caught fire in recent months for the House's inability to finish casino resort legislation. The House Speaker was one of the main reasons the gambling laws could not be passed, but instead of taking blame, DeLeo replaced some key positions.
James E. Vallee, the House majority leader, was replaced by Ronald Mariano. Vallee will now fill a smaller role, and Mariano will help lead the effort to bring casinos to Massachusetts. Brian Dempsey will become the new Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee.
Dempsey was a large part of the group that negotiated to bring slots and casino gambling to the state. Although the legislation was vetoed by Governor Duval Patrick, Dempsey will be a key ally when DeLeo again tries to push the gambling expansion.
Earlier this year, DeLeo claimed that he may pursue the gambling legislation this session. Governor Patrick, who ran on a platform that included gambling expansion, has said that lawmakers should focus on other issues this session. Patrick is upset the legislators were unable to come up with a gambling bill last year.
The bill that was sent to Patrick included slot machines for state race tracks. The governor was opposed to the slots at the tracks, and after agreeing to a compromise, the House and Senate then sent him a bill with more than the compromised amount of slots at the tracks, leading to Patrick's veto.
The Super Bowl is the biggest one-day gambling event of the year.
Vegas casinos will do more than $100 million US in business and several more billion dollars are expected to be wagered through bookies and on-line.
Sports in general have become the betting lollipop of choice for more than 100 million Americans.
It’s all fun and games.
Until someone gets hurt.
And, a lot of people are getting hurt, according to Arnie Wexler, a recovering compulsive gambler who has worked with athletes, colleges and professional sports leagues in an effort to stem what for some goes from an innocent flutter on a lottery to a life-altering obsession.
Football’s biggest spectacle is also the greatest temptation to sports gamblers.
“Playoff games and the Super Bowl are to compulsive gamblers what New Year’s Eve is to the alcoholic,” says Wexler, via e-mail, as the Steelers and Packers prepare for Super Bowl XLV.
Now if your yearly wager amounts to the occasional Pro Line ticket and the office Super Bowl pool, obviously there isn’t much of an issue. But for too many bettors it is only the tip of the iceberg on which life can come crashing down.
“It’s a huge (problem). I dealt with hockey players, basketball, baseball and football players,” Wexler told QMI Agency recently in an interview.
“I have spoken to more compulsive gamblers than anyone else in America and have gotten hundreds of phone calls after playoff games and the Super Bowl from compulsive gamblers,” Wexler says. “Some have spoken about embezzlements, white-collar crimes and destroying themselves and their families.“
He, himself, once contemplated suicide. He now runs a help line out of his Florida office with his wife, speaks on campuses, counsels college and pro athletes. He has been consulted by almost every major sports league.
“This is a huge problem not only with players but some executives. It’s a hidden secret. They don’t want the information to get out to the public. So they try to hide it. They’re afraid the media will write about it.”
But every sport has been touched by the issue from the NBA banning referee Tim Donaghy for gambling. From Pete Rose blackening his reputation, to Michael Jordan raising eyebrows at the blackjack tables of Vegas, to legendary college quarterback Art Schlichter’s life spiralling into a dark hole of gambling, crime and a prison cell.
“Pro sports is afraid of this thing. They don’t want you guys to talk about this,” Wexler said. “I remember I did a four-day seminar for the NFL in the mid-90s. The first day in Denver, ESPN was in the hotel lobby and wanted to interview me. (The NFL) told me I couldn’t talk to the media. The next day, they made everybody in the audience get up and identify who they were because they were afraid some media people were in the audience.”
All the major pro leagues including the NFL boast of gambling prevention and help programs. Not good enough, Wexler said, because the programs aren’t independently run.
“Would you go to your boss and tell him you’ve got a gambling problem?” he asked.
Many people, inside and outside the game, do have problems. Alex Karras and Paul Hornung were suspended in 1963 by the NFL for betting on NFL games. Something like the Rick Tocchet-Wayne & Janet Gretzky fiasco of a few seasons ago doesn’t surprise him. According to the U.S. National Gambling Study Commission, there are five million compulsive gamblers and 15 million people at risk in America.
Wexler started his crusade in 1968 after his gambling came close to costing him his family.
“I was 30 years old, married, two children. I was in debt for three times my annual salary. I owed two finance companies, three banks, loan sharks, bookmakers and family, friends ... I thought about suicide, but never had enough guts to carry it out.”
His experience, he says, is not unique. After an appearance on the Oprah Winfrey show he got almost 7,000 phone calls.
“Compulsive gamblers are very vulnerable (during the Super Bowl) because they are looking for the ‘lock bet,’ Wexler said. “The media hype juices the gambler and ... I wonder if any players might have a bet on the games.”
The gambling issue has been at the center of Alabama politics for so long that almost every resident has their own opinions on how the gambling issue has been handled the past couple of years. Opinion are also a plenty on how the situation should be handled in the future.
That may make it difficult to find a jury of Alabama residents that can be objective in the upcoming trial of lawmakers, lobbyists, and casino owners. The trial stems from an indictment handed down claiming that the accused were involved in a bribe scheme surrounding the gambling issue.
Lawyers for the defense on Friday filed a motion asking for the right to ask potential jurors about their stance on various gambling issues. Among the questions will be whether or not the jury candidate ever won or lost money gambling, and if the person believes that lobbyists are good or bad for a political system.
If the judge grants the motion, potential jurors will be bombarded with questions about gambling and politics. By the end, it may be difficult for the prosecution and defense to come to an agreement on which candidates should be selected to serve on the jury.
While the legal battle takes place in an Alabama court room, lawmakers admitted this week that they will allow the courts to also decide the legality of electronic bingo machines. Attorney General Luther Strange acknowledged that it is time to get the court's opinion on the machines, which he believes are illegal.
That stance is a change from the stance of former Governor Robert Riley. While in office, Riley decided he was the judge and jury when it came to the gambling issue and the bingo machines. Riley stood by his interpretation of the law, never allowing the casino owners the courtesy of having their day in court.
It has been several years since US casinos could be comfortable with their gaming revenue. That may be changing as working class gamblers have started to go back to the casinos on a regular basis across the country.
The revenue figures at US casinos have slipped, even at some of the top casino destinations such as Las Vegas and Atlantic City. With competition growing, some analysts wondered whether the casinos that existed before the recession would ever return to pre-recession revenue.
That is still a question that needs to be answered, but what has happened is working class citizens have started to frequent the casinos more often in the past two months. Revenue figures in Las Vegas have started to spike ever so slightly, and Gulf Coast casinos are seeing a rise in revenue as well.
"The economy is finally starting to turn for the better, and that is a good thing for casinos in the US," said Gaming Analyst Steve Schwartz. "The Americans that have been living paycheck to paycheck the past couple of years, namely the middle class, are starting to see some relief, and many have started to head back to the casinos."
If the economy continues to grow, the casino industry will be one of the biggest beneficiaries. Casino gambling is bigger across the US than ever even with revenue down. The amount of people gambling at casinos has reached an all time high, and that mainly comes from the expansion taking place in the US.
Almost all Northeastern states have expanded their gambling options in the past couple of years, and Midwestern states have also added new casinos. Delaware has added sports betting, and New Jersey lawmakers legalized online casinos earlier this month.
With tax time coming in a couple of months, casinos could feel the effects of tax day on both ends. Current gamblers may be forced to cut back if they have a heavy tax bill, while other gamblers who have stayed away due to lack of funds may soon come back if they will be receiving a tax refund.
Larry Wilcox, who played Officer Jonathan "Jon" Baker, the sidekick to the flirtatious Officer Frank "Ponch" Poncherello, is on the other side of the law after he plead guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit securities fraud. Wilcox, who was on the smash hit show CHiPs from 1977 – 1982 was facing up to five years in federal prison, but the judge went easy on him thanks to his 13-month stint in the Vietnam War, sentencing him to 3 years probation and 500 hours of community service.
Wilcox was sued by the SEC for manipulating the volume and price of penny stocks to illegally generate sales. He was also accused of trying to bribe undercover FBI agents thinking that they were pension fund managers.
Wilcox, who cried in the courtroom, was given a break by Judge James I. Cohn, who cited evident and sincere remorse on the part of the plaintiff, calling the episode an "abberation in an otherwise exemplary life."
Wilcox served in Vietnam during the Tet Offensive. He was honorably discharged with the rank of E6 Staff Sergeant in 1973.
Wilcox currently lives with his third wife, Marlene Harmon, and their two teenage sons in the San Fernando Valley. He spends his time on various philanthropic projects and caring for his father-in-law, who suffered from a stroke.
During Wilcox's television stint, although he and co-star Erik Estrada often butted heads, Wilcox refused to return for the sixth and final season of CHiPs because he felt producers continually favored Estrada.
The state of Vermont has been left out in the cold when it comes to casino expansion in the Northeast. While other states have started to expand their gaming industries at a rapid pace, Vermont has held its ground with no casinos.
If Republican Ron Hubert and his allies get their way, Vermont will soon become a player in the gaming industry. Hubert has proposed legislation that would legalize one casino in Vermont, a steeping stone to perhaps further expansion down the road.
"A lot of people in the state of Vermont are taking money outside the state to casinos," said Hubert. "I thought there was certainly no harm in getting the conversation started." getting the conversation started and getting the bill passed are two separate things.
The Democratic leadership in Vermont wants no part of passing a bill that would legalize casino gambling. House Speaker Shap Smith has already stated his opposition to bringing a casino to the state. Other lawmakers are equally opposed to any type of gambling expansion.
Vermont has a state lottery, but it took almost a decade to legalize that form of betting. Unlike in other states, Vermont has held steady on their anti-casino stance for the past couple of years. With millions of dollars leaving the state, Hubert believes it is time to update their outdated gaming laws.
The argument against casinos is one that can be seen in almost any state in the country. Anti-gaming conservatives feel that gambling takes away from the morals of residents in a particular area. Hubert points out, however, that Vermont residents are already gambling at casinos, they are just doing so in other states.
Nevada USA is a state like no other in America. It is a place where gambling contributes a great deal to the economy and Las Vegas flourishes today. In 1931, Nevada legalized most forms of gambling and during the fifties it became a world renowned gambling capital. In the past agencies from abroad would approach Nevada for advice due its long time experience in the world of gambling. The state is now itself looking for advice from experience online gambling operators and regulators in an attempt to legalize the venue within Nevada’s state borders.
It has been announced that the Alderney Gambling Control Commission will be giving the State of Nevada and the Nevada State Gaming Control Board advice on the setting up and regulatory framework and other possibilities for a possible future in internet based gambling.
Gaming Control Board Chairman Mark Lipparelli commented, on the signed arrangement to share data, "There is no question that the Internet gaming world is moving quickly and at a good speed toward Nevada," Lipparelli continued. "We've realized that it is important for Nevada to form these alliances. We need to look at the places that have been regulating Internet gaming and engage these regulators."
Chief Executive Officer of the Alderney Gambling Control Commission, André Wilsenach, also commented on the deal the two jurisdictions has made, "We are looking forward to working with Nevada Gaming Control Board in the areas of investigations, compliance and developing technical standards,"
Various European online gambling operators are looking to supply software and business expertise to Nevada should the state legalize the activity and regulate the process. It was the Nevada Senator Reid who was pro legalization of online gambling and poker prior to the American mid term elections which saw the gambling bill put on the back burner.
You may normally ignore the entertainment during the Super Bowl, and this year you may want to do the same unless you enjoy the likes of Glee’s Lea Michele. She will be singing “America the Beautiful” during the opening of the Super Bowl XLV where the Steelers and the Packers will battle it out on February 6, in Arlington, Texas.
Lea Michel won’t be the only entertainer on the scene, viewers can also expect to catch Christina Aguilera singing the national anthem which she definitely has the pipes for and her performance should also help draw some much needed attention. As part of the pre-game festivities, USA Today also reported how country singer Keith Urban will also be performing along with pop rock band, Maroon 5.
If you can stand yet another performance from the Black Eyed Peas then you may be happy or unhappy to know that they will be the main attraction of the evening as they will be the stars of the halftime show. The Peas will also be joined by DJ David Guetta as well as Sports Illustrated models Christine Teigen, Anne V., Julie Henderson and Genevieve Morton, reported People Magazine.

Sean "Diddy" Combs is reportedly being sued for $1 trillion by a Los Angeles woman who claims he is responsible for the Sept. 11 terror attacks.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Valerie Joyce Wilson Turks also sought a restraining order against the Grammy Award-winning hip-hop mogul, alleging Combs put her child in a wheelchair and stole a poker chip worth "zillions of dollars." A judge has denied the restraining order.
"(Combs) went through Kim Porter and Rodney King and knocked down the (World Trade Centre) and then they all came and knocked my children down," Turks writes in rambling court papers obtained by RadarOnline. "Set me up to be on disability and disabled my baby. He put my baby in a wheelchair."
Turks, who claims she has a 23-year-old child with Combs, wants $900 billion in child support, and $100 billion more for "loss of income."
In many states, the legality of gambling is being questioned as lawmakers seek to increase revenue from poker games. In Florida, a tournament was recently held that exemplifies how gambling and charity can go hand in hand.
The Taking It Off For Charity poker tournament was held in Florida Friday evening, and the event was a big success. The Texas Hold'em tournament was held at The Vault Nightclub, and dozens of participants showed up in support of the St. Francis House and Goodwill Industries International.
The rules to the tournament were simple, each player that was below the average chip count at each blind, had to take off a piece of clothing and donate it to the cause. The event did not get too racy, with the rules permitting that players only be allowed to strip down to a bathing suit.
Players had an option to play the tournament for free, or to pay a $15 entry fee. The entry fee gave the players access to wings, priority seating, beer, a t-shirt, and a raffle ticket. The raffle ticket was for a chance to win a scooter. During the event, over 500 pounds of clothing was collected and donated.
Over the past few years, poker has become a driving force for charity events. Millions of dollars have been raised across the US from tournaments that are held in casinos and bars. Each tournament has a dedicated cause, and as long as the cards are in the air, players are showing up to pledge their support.
Casinos have held major fundraisers in their poker rooms, and some states where charity gambling is illegal have lawmakers trying to change the laws. Poker has become one of the most popular sports in the world over the past decade.
"For anyone looking to raise money for a good cause, holding a casino night or poker tournament is a must," said Gaming Analyst Steve Schwartz. "Over the years, gamblers have shown that they can have as big a heart as anybody, and the millions raised from these events is further proof of that fact."
The NFL has spent decades ignoring the impact that gambling has on its sport. While the NFL has turned a blind public eye towards gambling, their actions often reflect that they have a complete understanding of how much betting really means to the league.
The Pro Bowl start time for today is another example of how the NFL has a finger on the pulse of their gamblers. The game will begin at 7pm, a perfect time for bettors to finish up their family responsibilities for the day and settle in front of the television for the game.
"They used to play the Pro Bowl in the afternoon, and I never was able to place any bets on the game because I always had family events to attend, and I didn't have time to watch the game," said Las Vegas resident Gaby Huerta. "Today, I will be watching the game and I have already placed my bets last night at the sports book."
Thousands of gamblers will be watching the game tonight live from Las Vegas sports books. With not much else going on in the world of sports on this Sunday evening, the Pro Bowl will be the premiere betting attraction of the evening. Even with some of the top players out of the game due to injury, bettors will be tuned in thanks to the start time.
helping out the sports books with the Pro Bowl has also been the NBA this afternoon. Two attractive games, Miami at Oklahoma City, and Boston at Los Angeles, will be played during the afternoon hours leading up to the Pro Bowl. The NBA games have brought gamblers to the sports books, and the Pro Bowl will likely keep them there through the night.
Odds makers have created an easy line for bettors, a pick 'em. The total for the game is up over sixty, indicating that sports books do not expect much defense to be played in the game. The Pro Bowl is back in Honolulu, Hawaii after a one year hiatus. The game last year was played in Miami, the site of the Super Bowl.
Two major players in the online gambling industry, PKR & Sportingbet have formed a brand new Association aimed at being advocates for the legalization and regulation of online gambling in the United States. They call themselves the US Online Gaming Association and past executive director of the group “Poker Voters of America” Melanie Brenner is heading the Association.
The USOGA believes that the opportunity for Federal legalization of online gambling has passed (for now) and its through state capitals that the US market will finally open. During this new associations first meeting with prospective partners or sponsors, Melanie Brenner confirmed that Secured American Games, Sportingbet and PKR have all committed to financial and technical support. PKR’s chief executive Malcolm Graham stated that the need for an organization like USOGA and the past group, Poker Voters of America is highly recommended and sorely needed especially now when legalization at the state level is becoming more apparent and highly possible.
To bring a collective and consistent message in the US by ways of the US Online Gaming Association, is sensible and equal to that of the Remote Gaming Association and European Gaming and Betting Association on the European front. By presenting a united front and sending the consistent message to legislators and operators alike, will help the industry as it strives to become a legalized power house throughout the United States.
Warner Bros has just announced that Superman will be played by British actor Henry Cavill, who is best known for his role as Charles Brandon on Showtime's The Tudors.
Cavill has tried to snag big roles in the past, losing a bid for Batman to Christian Bale, as well as vying for the part of James Bond, which he lost to Daniel Craig.
A Warner Bros exec told Deadline of Cavill, "He's got an amazing quality. He doesn't look too much like Reeve and Routh but he's big and strong and he has a very modern feel to him [...] We're really going to try and make Superman as contemporary as possible."
Everything about the new Superman movie has it looking like this reboot is going to be a blockbuster on par with the success that the Batman revitalization saw under the direction of Christopher Nolan. Nolan in fact will be involved with Snyder's Superman as he'll be working on it as the producer.
Unlike the Batman franchise which has always relied on well-established stars for the lead role, Superman films have tended to prefer using less known actors and the search for this Superman was no different. Last November rumors were swirling that the studio was looking for a Superman who was around 30 years old and who was either a discovery or a TV actor who was not a household name. It seems that 28-year-old Cavill fit that bill nicely.
The Zack Snyder Superman movie is slated for a 2012 release.

Tonight, actors from both the big screen and television will congregate in Los Angeles for yet another big awards show, the Screen Actors Guild Awards. You can expect to see many of the Oscar hopefuls nominated including “The King’s Speech”, “The Social Network” and “127 Hours.”
This is one awards show that actors actually care about because it takes into account that the success of a movie is a team effort and hands out awards such as “Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture” and “Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.”
According to NPR, out of the 20 nominees for this evening, 17 of them have also been nominated for an Oscar including Colin Firth for “The King’s Speech” and Christian Bale for the “The Fighter.” Many times SAG Award winners move on to win Oscars as well, such as last year’s winner Sandra Bullock who scored an award for “The Blind Side.” If an actor or movie wins a SAG award, the chances of them winning an Oscar are pretty high, which makes this an important event.
The SAGs are prestigious awards so you should expect to see all your favorite celebs decked out in the latest designer gear as they strut down the red carpet. Of course you can expect to see a red carpet pre-show which will air at 7:15 p.m. ET followed by the live broadcast of the SAG show starting at 8 p.m. ET on TNT and TBS.
SAG presenters for tonight will include Tina Fey, Susan Sarandon, Jon Hamm and Nicole Kidman among others.
Online gambling in the UK has pretty much been a free for all up until now. However reports in the media suggest that online gambling operators that target British players and avoid paying taxes may be coming to an end. According to a ‘senior government source’ the coalition government intends to crackdown with the first step being a ban on advertising in the UK for those operators based offshore and stopping the use of credit cards used for online gambling. While the source suggests the government is looking at the best interests of the public there is much scepticism. This is more likely the start of increasing revenues.
Currently online gambling operators that are based in certain offshore jurisdictions, known as those on the British ‘white list’, are permitted to advertise in the UK. However the report suggests that the Culture Secretary, Jeremy Hunt, has concerns with the level of problem gambling in the UK and is considering restrictions such as banning the use of credit cards used to prevent people gambling money they do not have. Bingo clubs based in the UK have never been allowed to accept credit cards as a form of payment.
The Daily Mail's source told the newspaper: "Ministers are concerned about the explosion of internet gambling advertising since [the political party then in power] Labour relaxed the gambling laws."
The source added that the Conservative-LibDem coalition government was looking at ways to protect the public from gambling companies that don’t meet UK standards, which is something that the previous Labour government failed to address.
Currently only gambling operators based in the UK are required to hold a license issued by the Gambling Commission and to pay UK tax on gambling profits. As such most online gambling companies are based offshore to avoid the stringent rules they would have to adhere to. Given the taxation levels that UK bingo companies and other gambling operators have to pay for being based in the UK it places a significant disadvantage in competitiveness as well.
Online operators based across Europe and in places such as Alderney, the Isle of Man, Antigua, and the Australian state of Tasmania can benefit from being on the ‘white list’ and hence are able to advertise to the UK market, however according to the report this is likely to be reviewed in the near future.
The newspaper article claimed that UK consumers spent £2.5 billion on internet or telephone gambling last year, and operators licensed by the Gambling Commission represented less than a quarter of this.
"This means that UK consumers aren't being as well protected as they could be," said the government source.
"We are the only country to permit overseas operators to advertise whilst relying on an overseas licence on issues of playing protection," the source added, revealing that Secretary Hunt is hoping to review the legislation to ensure all online and telephone gambling in Britain is regulated by the Gambling Commission.
Suggestions from the report may have significant implications for all of the top online bingo sites in the UK. None of them are based in the UK and all the most well known sites uses a multiple forms of advertising in the UK. Currently there are more than half dozen TV campaigns being shown and no doubt without such many of these operators would struggle. It is not known how far the legislation would extend and it would be enforced. There is the possibility that not only would the TV campaigns go but also advertising in the newspapers, magazines and online advertising. Many sites advertise on popular websites such as Facebook, Amazon, Google and Ebay. The legislation would more than likely to ban this for UK customers (it is actually a lot easier to enforce than people think) as many of these sites have targeted adverting campaigns to specific markets. The reality is that online bingo portals in the UK that advertise to non UK based operators would be a thing of the past and email campaigns to members residing in the UK could also be stopped. For those that are sceptical of how this would be policed just consider how quickly the US government put a stop to such practices with threats of criminal charges.
The reality is that depending on how far the legislation goes the majority of the online bingo operators that are available to the UK bingo market that refused to be licensed and pay UK taxes would cease to trade. For many others the legislation would be detrimental as the increased costs to operate in what is now a highly competitive market would bring an end to their survival.
Having to be licensed by the Gambling Commission would also end some of the unfair practices that have been adopted and promoted by operators. Things such as the 900% bonus for new members which is really a 300% bonus on the first 3 deposits would be a thing of the past as the two things are completely different and it is as such nothing more than false advertising (e.g the 900% claim would suggest if you deposit £10 you get a further £90, the reality is that you would have to deposit £30 to get the £90 bonus). In addition operators would have to adhere to strict rules in terms of preventing underage and problem gambling which can only be a positive for the industry.
There are many campaigners for fair taxation laws in the UK, especially within the bingo industry, that want to create a fair and level competitive playing field within the gambling industry. We have ourselves stated that we are in favour of such legislation and suggested recently that we are expecting changes in both the UK and US markets. Given the economic problems and high levels of national debt in both countries the governments would benefit significantly by taxing offshore gambling operators and common sense suggests it is only a matter of time before such proposals are agreed. Such a move is becoming common in countries across Europe in which operators are only allowed to take deposits fr
An ice tea advert to be broadcast during the Super Bowl will document a day in the life of Eminem.
The rapper will appear in claymation form in the campaign, which has reportedly cost Lipton Brisk $1million.
Frank Sinatra and Ozzy Osbourne’s likeness have previously been used, according to the New York Post.
The Super Bowl offers companies access to one of the most lucrative TV audiences in television.
This year’s final will see the Pittsburgh Steelers take on the Green Bay Packers on February 6. The Black Eyed Peas will perform during the half-time show.
Governor Duval Patrick has made it known that he does not want to discuss the gambling expansion issue in the new legislative session, but House Speaker Robert DeLeo seems intent on reviving the talks. The latest indication of DeLeo's obsession with the issue came on Monday.
When news broke of how Evergreen Solar was going to close its plant in Massachusetts, DeLeo used the news to again push his gambling agenda. DeLeo renewed his vow of bringing slot machines to state race tracks, something that Governor Patrick has opposed throughout the gambling expansion conversations.
"I will work closely with Governor Patrick and Senate President Murray to devise a gaming plan which can provide much needed jobs, address the 'blue collar depression' and serve as a source of immediate local aid," said DeLeo, as reported by the The Boston Globe. The comments came back in early January.
Shortly after those comments, however, Governor Patrick made it known that he odes not want legislators wasting time on the gambling issue this session. Lawmakers spent most of last session grappling over the gambling proposals, and in the end, Patrick was upset they could not produce a bill he could support.
Governor Patrick has been attempting to bring casino resorts to Massachusetts for several years. His first attempts were stopped by then-House Speaker Salvatore DiMasi. When DiMasi was replaced by DeLeo, analysts figured a gambling law was a given. The two battled, however, over DeLeo's insistence that slots be awarded to state race tracks.
With two failed attempts in the books, DeLeo decided he would rather deal with other issues this session, but DeLeo showed again on Monday that he is not finished with the gaming debate. The House Speaker believes that if lawmakers start the debate earlier this session, there will be a better chance of producing a bill that will please himself, Patrick, and Murray.
