The Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission may finally be putting an end to a search for a developer to operate a casino in Sumner County. The search has been taking place for several years, and the Commission could end all the drama at a January 14th meeting.

The Commission had already given their approval to a developer several years ago, but after the economic recession hit, the developer, along with two others in the state, pulled out of the deal. It has taken the state a long time to go through the process again of choosing new developers.

Peninsula Gaming has won all previous approvals for their casino plan in Sumner County. Officials from the company will meet with the Commission in a couple of weeks, and if they are satisfied, the Commission will then vote to allow Peninsula to start building the $260 million facility.

The state, as is the case for all four voter-approved casinos in Kansas, will own the casino. The Commission will be responsible for regulating the casino, and the state will receive over twenty percent of the revenue generated. Peninsula will build the casino near the Kansas Turnpike, near Mulvane. The facility will be just twenty minutes south of Wichita.

The casino gaming industry was intended to be a major revenue producer for Kansas after voters approved the four casino plan. At first, the Kansas Lottery had trouble with the application process, and after they worked out the kinks, the developers started to pull out one by one. Dodge City is currently the only of the four regions to have an operational casino.

Kansas joins some other surprising states that have legalized casino gambling. Ohio residents had long been against casinos, but a plan was finally passed with voters having a change of heart. For years, travelers have come to Maine to enjoy winter activities such as snowboarding and skiing. In 2011, tourists will be coming for something else, a new casino that is being built in Oxford County.

The casino was approved by voters in Maine, and despite some opposition, it appears the casino will be built as planned. When completed, thousands of tourists will come from other states to enjoy the gambling facility. The new activity is expected to bring millions of dollars in tax revenue.

On Tuesday, a chair derailed at the Sugarloaf Mountain ski resort, leaving seven people injured. The extent of the injuries were not revealed, but a release by the ski resort claims that all of the injured people have been transported off the mountain. Accidents like this are nothing new to ski resorts, with several ski lifts malfunctioning in recent years.

Hundreds of vacationers were removed from the mountain after the accident, although Sugarloaf claims they will run normal operations for the rest of the week, excluding the area where the ski left was broken. Investigators are looking into the cause for the malfunction.

As for the casino plans, they were in question when an opposition group asked for a recount of the mid-term election vote that gave approval for the location of the casino. That recount ended after the group realized the vote would not go in their favor. The margin of victory for the casino was less than one percent.

Black Bear Entertainment is now pushing forward with their plans to build the casino. The company continued to work on the process while the recount was taking place, and now comes the permit and regulatory work that needs to be done prior to construction. Once complete, the Oxford casino will join many other new casinos throughout the Northeast.

It was a robbery that boggled the mind, a thief on a motorbike walks into the Bellagio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas armed and heads over to a craps table where he took $1.5 million worth of casino chips. He wasn’t attacked by Bellagio security or followed and was able to jump on his motorbike and ride off into the sunset. Now, weeks after the robbery the Bellagio is fighting back by discontinuing their $25K casino chips and asking gamblers to redeem their remaining chips by April 22nd.

The state of Maryland moved one step closer this week to becoming a much bigger player in the casino gambling industry in the Northeast. The Anne Arundel County Department of Planning and Zoning has approved a development plan for a new casino.

The Cordish Cos. has been on a roll when it comes to victories in the state. First, voters gave approval for a casino to be located at the Arundel Mills mall in Anne Arundel County. Then came the approval of the development plans.

A temporary casino will now start being constructed that will hold 2,000 slot machines. That will be phase one of the construction. Phase two will be to complete the rest of the permanent facility. Several different dining options, a venue for musical acts, and the actual permanent casino is expected to be completed by the end of 2012.

Maryland had their first casino opened earlier this year, and judging from the early revenue results, casinos will be a big hit with Maryland residents. The Anne Arundel casino is expected to become the biggest casino in the state in terms of revenue. The permanent casino will have 4,750 slot machines.

A bit of a fun fact about the tour is that the museum’s attractions are housed in the old Las Vegas federal courthouse where many of the mobsters were tried back in the 1950’s.

It looks like employees at Hard Rock Hotel and Casino have been working overtime to make a little extra cash on the side by selling drugs and allowing sexual acts to take place in their restrooms. The news came from the Gaming Control Board, who fined the hotel $650,000+ after undercover cops offered proof of such activities.

According to the Las Vegas Sun, there had been previous complaints from the Gaming Board both in 2006 and 2009 claiming that they’ve become aware of their issues with drug distribution, violence, date rape and prostitution among other things.

The Hard Rock Hotel neither confirmed or denied the charges and chose to settle by paying the $500K fine plus $75K to the Gaming Board and the police to cover their "investigative" costs. How charitable of the hotel to cover investigative costs, it makes for a nice holiday bonus.

According to the Board, all employees including high-level executives were tested for drug use and over 97 percent were drug free. The Hard Rock also claimed to have contained the problem by having fired certain employees and executives who may have been involved.

Part of the investigation included bands of undercover police who attempted to prove their case. Several hotel hosts and security guards were caught selling ecstasy pills and cocaine to such cops and promised to deliver anything else they needed.

A retired California firefighter nailed an $8.4 million jackpot from a progressive slot machine at an American Indian casino, officials said.

Dale Valentine, 61, a retired firefighter from San Leandro was playing a Megabucks slot Thursday on his way to his second home near the Twin Pine casino in Middletown when the lucky logos began lining up, The (Santa Rosa) Press Democrat reported.

"I was just sitting there looking at it," Valentine said. The machine made progressively more noise, but "there's not the kinds of bells and whistles you'd think" with a multimillion-dollar payout, he said.

California Megabucks is a progressive slot machine gambling device linked with other state-wide Indian casinos, said Tim McGlynn, the casino marketing director.

Valentine is a regular slot player whose previous personal-best was an $8,000 win, the newspaper said.

After he phoned his wife with news of his $8,430,301.44 jackpot, Valentine told her: "I won some money. I won a lot of money."

The Casino Liquor and Gaming Control Authority fined Star City $10,000 for breaking the regulation that calls for casinos to stop serving intoxicated customers. The Authority requested a reason for why the casino employees continued to serve the man over a seventeen hour period.

"The nature of poker is that players tend to be ...very controlled in their facial expressions and body movements," said Star City, in a leaked letter to the Authority, as reported by The Daily Telegraph. "This level of control means that many of the visible signs that a person...is affected by alcohol may be minimized."

Three of the workers that were serving the man the drinks have either been fired or demoted. One of the three was unidentified, while another believes that her termination was unjust. Mikhael-Ghanime claims there were several other servers who also sold the man drinks.

The casino came away with just a little more than a slap on the wrist after the Authority reduced the fine. The casino had been in good standing with previous dealings with drunk patrons. The casino has thrown out over 6,000 customers for being overly intoxicated.

Macau's government says casino gambling revenue surged by more than half in 2010, solidifying its rank as the world's biggest gambling market.
