A woman has been arrested for blowing R12 million of her lover's money, it was reported on Sunday.
The Sunday Times reported that Sarka van der Merwe, 49, allegedly spent R1 million gambling online, gave relatives R341,393, and transferred R10m into her own account.
The man she lived with, 69-year-old Durban businessman Peter Odgers, had to sell his property portfolio to pay off his debts, and had since brought fraud charges against Van der Merwe, the newspaper reported.
According to the Sunday Times, Van der Merwe intended pleading guilty when she appeared in the Durban Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on October 26. She was out on bail of R25,000.

There are also new forfeiture claims against former Full Tilt Poker directors Raymond Bitar and Howard Lederer as the complaint claims Lederer received at least $44.3m in deposits from FTP to his bank accounts between December 2006 and September 2011.

Cyber casino operators are said to be playing hide-and-seek with the police through the latest Internet technology.
State police commissioner Datuk Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani said he could not deny that cyber casinos which had long been in existence in the state had been using the latest Internet technology to elude the police.
“We have to find new ways to get them. We have stepped up our surveillance, monitoring and enforcement to keep them in check,” Acryl said here yesterday.
He added that their ongoing effort to curb cyber casinos had kept the situation under control.
On whether students were among those frequenting cyber casino outlets, Acryl said students constituted the minority.
The majority of those patronising such illegal online gambling outlets were mainly young adults.
He said these online casinos were usually linked to Taiwan, Hong Kong, China and Macau websites. The customers could change cash for credit online to play.
“They can then change the credit into cash when they want to leave,” said Acryl.
He said only regular customers were offered the online casinos and the police would have to go undercover to break the case.
“The most challenging part is that cyber casino operators keep changing their Internet technology to make it harder for us to get to them,” said Acryl.

A Southern Arizona tribe has become the first in the state -- and possibly the nation -- to offer Internet gaming.
The Pascua Yaqui's Casino del Sol web site offers poker, slots, blackjack and roulette to visitors. It is being done, though, in a way to comply with existing state and federal laws that make Internet gaming for cash illegal.
But Roy Corby, the casino's chief operating officer, said it's a means to an end.
"It's just a matter of time before we have either a statewide Internet gaming law or a national gaming law,' he said. And he figures that having an operating web site will give the Yaquis a boost when that day comes.
"For us it was very important to be at the forefront and to be able to evolve with this and give our guests an early experience in the life cycle,' Corby said.
The move has not gone unnoticed by Mark Brnovich, the state's gaming director. He said, though, there's little he can do -- other than to monitor the activities -- as long as what is occurring does not meet the state definition of "gambling.'
Brnovich said, though, he is in agreement with Corby that full-blown Internet gaming is coming. And much as Corby wants his tribe to be ready, Brnovich said he does not want regulators to have to play catch-up when that happens.
At the heart of it all is the Double-Down Casino system developed by International Gaming Technology.
Staci Alonso, the company's vice president of marketing, said her company offers the system to brick-and-mortar casinos without cost. The casinos then put it on their web sites.
But there is money involved.
Players who sign up get $1 million in virtual chips at no cost. That, however, does not last as long as it might seem.

A petition is circulating online opposing the agreement allowing the Mashpee Wampanoag to operate a state-sanctioned, federally-authorized sovereign casino in Taunton.
The petition, addressed to the federal Department of Interior, Bureau of Indian Affairs and U.S. Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, was initiated by East Taunton casino opponent Michelle Littlefield on Wednesday. Posted on change.org and circulated by email, its only value is to convey the weight of public opinion.
Sympathizers may sign the petition electronically and can choose whether their signatures will be publicly displayed. They also may attach comments.
By 5 p.m. Thursday, the petition carried 115 electronic signatures.
The petition lists 16 points of opposition to the compact, specifically citing Gov. Deval Patrick's contradictory positions on this and previous tribal efforts to have land taken into trust for gaming.
"The Mashpee Wampanoag tribe does not have historical ties to the land in East Taunton as required by federal law," the petition states. "The tribe's final determination has already identified Mashpee, Massachusetts, as the tribe's historical land."
"This tribe is clearly reservation shopping," the petition contends.
Among the first signers of the petition was state Rep. Keiko Orrall, R-Lakeville, who said: "I am strongly opposed to this casino and the way the tribal compact was reached. It has not been an open or transparent process and due diligence did not happen with regards to mitigation and the effects on surrounding communities.
"I am in full support of this petition and applaud the residents who have rallied to ensure that their voices are heard."
The tribe met all the deadlines in the state's Expanded Gaming Act to be granted the exclusive rights to operate a casino in Southeastern Massachusetts. Its only remaining hurdles are BIA approval of the compact by mid-October and the taking of property into federal trust by the Department of Interior.
