Jobs have always seemed elusive in impoverished Jasper County on South Carolina's southern tip near Savannah, Ga.

Residents have waited decades for a $500 million container port to be built on the South Carolina side of the Savannah River. And a retail complex requiring state incentives could have meant 2,500 jobs but was scuttled by lawmakers.

Now, local officials are pinning their hopes on a proposal for an upscale resort, shopping and entertainment complex that could create upward of 4,000 jobs.

Anyone who says you can get rich through gambling is a fool or a knave. Multiply the size of the prize by your chance of winning it and you'll always get a number far larger than what you put into the pot. The only sure winners are the organizers -- casino owners, state lotteries, and con artists of all kinds.

Organized gambling is a scam. And it particularly preys upon people with lower incomes -- who assume they can't make it big any other way, who often find it hardest to assess the odds, and whose families can least afford to lose the money.

Yet America is now opening the floodgates.

The sun rose on a new era in Atlantic City on Monday as the $2.4 billion Revel casino resort opened its doors with a blueberry smoothie toast at sunrise and a rush of gamblers eager to try out the city's 12th casino.

The first customer through the door shortly wasted little time in winning big. Jerry Colonna of Mount Laurel arrived at 5 a.m. to play some roulette before heading for his job at a waste management company. He walked away from the table up $1,500 after just 10 minutes of gambling.

“No one wants to be the first loser,” he said. “I'm a degenerate gambler,” he joked. “And like all degenerate gamblers, they want to see the new thing. This is going to turn Atlantic City around. That's obvious.”

An Internet gambling bill working its way through the New Jersey legislature would let Atlantic City casinos take bets from gamblers in other states and even other countries, as long as federal and state authorities agree it's legal.

The measure was approved Tuesday by a state Senate committee.

"This is another step forward toward my goal of New Jersey becoming the Silicon Valley of Internet gaming, generating hundreds of millions in revenues for our casino industry, thousands of jobs for Atlantic City, and tens of millions of revenues for our Casino Revenue Fund to help seniors and the disabled," said Sen. Raymond Lesniak, a northern New Jersey Democrat who has been the bill's most vocal supporter.

Watching Nevadans form long lines across the California border last week, hoping to strike it rich gambling, would seem akin to Idahoans emigrating for potatoes or Wisconsinites taking a road trip for cheese. Gambling is, more than anything else, supposed to be Nevada’s franchise.

But California offers something Nevada doesn’t: lottery tickets.

Record lottery ticket sales of $1.5 billion last week for a jackpot of $640 million once again raises the question of why Nevada doesn’t participate in a lottery.

“Nevada is sending people out of state to gamble,” said Assemblyman Paul Aizley, D-Las Vegas, who authored a resolution in 2009 to change the state’s constitution. “That, to me, is crazy.”

Casinos see it differently. A lottery in Nevada would be, in their mind, competition.

The Palms Casino Resort is having a Twitter feud with Motley Crue’s lead singer, Vince Neil. After the singer bashed the Las Vegas hotel in some tweets, the hotel responded (via Twitter) with an eight-tweet response – each kind of saying the same thing over and over: We’re pretty bad at PR.

Playtech powered Casino Tropez has just launched a new online slot game titled Lucky Panda. Panda is an animal found uniquely in China. The symbols on the reels include other animals indigenous to China such as monkey, snake and tiger. The styling of the high value card symbols and the background graphics enhance the China theme. The Lucky Panda logo is the wild symbol and it appears only on reels 2, 3 and 4. The panda is the scatter symbol. The animations are in keeping with the stature of the slot game. In the wild symbol the bamboo curtain parts to reveal an idyllic Chinese landscape. In the animal symbols the animals project from their slots and make their characteristic noises.

The big question going around the water cooler at Nevada-based casinos is, “Are we back?” The state just published official documents showcasing its annual revenue for 2011 and it is the second year in a row that it has gone up. Analysts were also quick to point that these results are not just reliant on Baccarat play, the popular casino game that lifted this industry’s performance throughout the recession.

Throughout the state, the casinos collected over $10 billion in casino gaming revenues in 2011. This is a 2.8 percent increase over the total in 2010, as well as the biggest jump for the Nevada industry in four years.

On the Las Vegas Strip alone, casino gaming revenues went up by 5.1 percent. These casinos made $6.068 billion. It was the first time the casinos along the Strip made over $6 billion since 2008.

The potential for online gambling legalization in the United States may as well prevent hundreds from going to jail for such atrocities as spinning a roulette wheel at an offshore online casino.

Yet, this presents a great threat to many land-based casinos run by Native American tribes throughout the nation. The worry is that many valuable poker and blackjack players may be able to play online blackjack rather than doing it at Indian reservations.

Moreover, the slot players may as well pursue many options such as mobile slots with their smartphones. Not to mention many other games such as baccarat, a nice chunk of revenues at many casinos.

NEW JERSEY, says lobbyist William Pascrell III, is poised to become the "Silicon Valley of Internet gambling." That sounds pretty impressive, but we have to wonder if it’s possible. More importantly, we don’t think it’s even desirable.

Pascrell represents the online gambling industry and as such, he supports legislation permitting Internet wagering in New Jersey. A state Senate committee approved the bill this week and a similar bill is being considered by the Assembly.

Supporters say online gambling can increase casino revenue by as much as $250 million and bring the state $55 million annually in taxes. It may indeed do some of that, but it also would do something else: discourage people from visiting Atlantic City. And that makes no sense.

With the Mega Millions lottery reaching over $600 million, the American public went lottery crazy. Citizens who rarely played the lottery waited in long lines and dreamed about a life changing win despite knowing full well they had a better chance of being hit by an asteroid than picking the winning Mega Millions numbers. And it wasn’t just ordinary citizens playing the lottery.
