Organized gambling is a scam. And it particularly preys upon people with lower incomes -- who assume they can't make it big any other way, who often find it hardest to assess the odds, and whose families can least afford to lose the money.
Yet America is now opening the floodgates.

The first customer through the door shortly wasted little time in winning big. Jerry Colonna of Mount Laurel arrived at 5 a.m. to play some roulette before heading for his job at a waste management company. He walked away from the table up $1,500 after just 10 minutes of gambling.
“No one wants to be the first loser,” he said. “I'm a degenerate gambler,” he joked. “And like all degenerate gamblers, they want to see the new thing. This is going to turn Atlantic City around. That's obvious.”

But California offers something Nevada doesn’t: lottery tickets.
Record lottery ticket sales of $1.5 billion last week for a jackpot of $640 million once again raises the question of why Nevada doesn’t participate in a lottery.
“Nevada is sending people out of state to gamble,” said Assemblyman Paul Aizley, D-Las Vegas, who authored a resolution in 2009 to change the state’s constitution. “That, to me, is crazy.”
Casinos see it differently. A lottery in Nevada would be, in their mind, competition.

An Internet gambling bill working its way through the New Jersey legislature would let Atlantic City casinos take bets from gamblers in other states and even other countries, as long as federal and state authorities agree it's legal.
The measure was approved Tuesday by a state Senate committee.

Yet, this presents a great threat to many land-based casinos run by Native American tribes throughout the nation. The worry is that many valuable poker and blackjack players may be able to play online blackjack rather than doing it at Indian reservations.
Moreover, the slot players may as well pursue many options such as mobile slots with their smartphones. Not to mention many other games such as baccarat, a nice chunk of revenues at many casinos.

Pascrell represents the online gambling industry and as such, he supports legislation permitting Internet wagering in New Jersey. A state Senate committee approved the bill this week and a similar bill is being considered by the Assembly.
Supporters say online gambling can increase casino revenue by as much as $250 million and bring the state $55 million annually in taxes. It may indeed do some of that, but it also would do something else: discourage people from visiting Atlantic City. And that makes no sense.
