Online casino gambling and the revival of the UK bingo hall helped lift first-half revenues at Rank, the leisure group.

Rank’s bingo halls have returned to sales growth for the first time in five years, helping lift first-half revenues by 5 per cent on a like-for-like basis.

The British owner of the Grosvenor casino and Mecca bingo hall brands, increased sales from £351.7m to £370.1m in the six months to December 31. Group operating profit rose 11 per cent from £41.7m to £46.1m.

Rank relies on remote gamblers for around 13 per cent of total revenues, a smaller proportion than rivals such as William Hill.

But the contribution from digital is growing fast. In the latest results, online revenues were up 14 per cent, boosted by a 50 per cent increase in the number of gamblers playing online at its casinos.

In response to the trend in online gambling, the UK government in December 2014 introduced a new tax for bets placed by British customers using betting portals based in Gibraltar and other foreign jurisdictions.

Remote gaming duty (RGD)— which is applied at 15 per cent of gross profits — cost Rank £4.8m in the period. After adjusting for this, the company said operating profit was down 1 per cent.

Henry Birch, chief executive said even with the impact of RGD, adjusted earnings were up 4 per cent and the dividend had been raised 13 per cent. He added that all of Rank’s divisions achieved like-for-like sales growth.

Grosvenor Casinos, the largest business, grew 7 per cent to £219m with operating profit up 7 per cent at £33.3m after incurring RGD charges of £1.5m.

Mecca closed three of its bingo halls in the period but like-for-like revenue was up 3 per cent with digital growth of 5 per cent. Operating profit fell by 13 per cent to £19.9m.

Rank’s retail bingo business — distinct from revenues from bingo played online — increased 2 per cent in the period, which Mr Birch said was the first increase from its bingo halls for five years.

He said bingo halls were rapidly changing and had recently been boosted by the government’s halving of the bingo tax to 10 per cent. Around half of today’s players use tablets and iPads, rather than the traditional dabber and bingo card waiting for the numbers to be called out.

Mr Birch said it was “very pleasing” to have grown Mecca’s retail bingo business “giving us renewed confidence in its future”.

Enracha, its smaller chain of Spanish bingo halls, also achieved a 4 per cent increase in revenues to £16.9m and operating profits of £1.4m on the back of improvements in the Spanish economy.


The shares, which have risen around 60 per cent in the last year, opened 2.5 per cent higher than Thursday’s close, before falling back in London trading, but were still up slightly at 28.50p in early afternoon.
