Germany’s Max Altergott has just won the EPT Grand Final Super High Roller, after defeating a field of 50 players over three days on his way to capturing the title, and collecting the €1,746,400 ($2,259,143) first place prize.

Incredibly, Altergott is actually a professional cash-game heads-up specialist who only started playing tournaments recently, and so his victory at the Monte Carlo Bay Hotel counts as his first live cash.

By the time the €100,000 buy-in event reached its final table of seven, Jason Mercier was the chip leader with Max Altergott lying in 4th place. Mike Watson (K-Q) then became the first player to exit in 7th (€218,300), after running into the pocket aces of Sorel Mizzi, and 100 minutes later he was joined on the rail by Scott Seiver in 6th (€266,900), whose pocket nines faltered against the A-Q of Mercier.

Next, Vladimir Troyanovsky saw his tournament come to an end in 5th (€339,500) in a preflop all-in encounter which saw his K-Q pitted aginst the A-J of Sorel Mizzi, while Timothy Adams picked up €485,100 in 4th when his pocket nines came off second best against Max Altergott’s A-8.

Following Adams’ departure, the three remaining players failed to agree a deal and soon after Sorel Mizzi (K-Q) was eliminated by Altergott (J-J) in 3rd (€679,100), thus ushering in the heads-up phase of the competition against Jason Mercier.

As the heads-up battle commenced, Altergott held a 7.35m to 5.15m chip advantage over Mercier, but the US pro was soon able to eek out a slight lead until he lost most his stack going all-in holding Kd-7d on a Jd-8-7-4d board. Max Altergott made the call with his pocket queens and after the river blanked with a 2c, a depleted Jason Mercier was eliminated the very next hand and consequently finished the runner-up for €1,115,700, while Max Altergott was crowned the EPT champion

The final table payouts were as follows:

1 Max Altergott €1,746,400
2 Jason Mercier €1,115,700
3 Sorel Mizzi €679,100
4 Timothy Adams €485,100
5 Vladimir Troyanovsky €339,500
6 Scott Seiver €266,900
7 Mike Watson €218,300

Brent Hanks has won the 2013 California State Poker Championship, after defeating a field of 258 players over three days to lift the title, and collect the $117,760 first place prize.

Brent Hanks has been cashing in at live tournaments since 2006, with his biggest victory to date coming last year at the $1,500 WSOP No Limit Hold’em event, which he won for $517,725. With the US pro’s latest victory in Los Angeles he now takes his live career earnings to $1,417,155.

The $2,080 Main Event took place at the Commerce Casino and attracted a good mixture of amateurs and pros alike to create a prize pool worth $500,520. Amongst the notable names entering the competition was Mimi Tran, Jeff Madsen, Barry Greenstein and Eric Baldwin.

By the time the Main Event reached its final table of nine, Brent Hanks was the chip leader on a 1.3m stack, followed by Daniel Park and Jesse Martin. At the other extreme, 2004 WSOP bracelet winner Gavin Griffin was the short stack at the table with just 163,000 in chips.

Nevertheless, Griffin mounted an impressive comeback to make it all the way down to heads-up play against Hanks, having busted Dong Tao in 5th, David Malka in 4th and then Park in 3rd. However, Gavin Griffin was unable to overcome his final hurdle and eventually found himself all-in preflop holding A-6 to his opponent’s A-9. The board subsequently fell 7-7-4-9-A to relegate Gavin Griffin to a runner-up finish worth $82,640, while Brent Hanks was crowned the champion. Following his remarkable victory, Hanks tweeted:

“@nhgg Such a fun heads up. Good game man—really happy we played and got to know each other a bit.”

“We won the California St championship and a golden bear worth 117K. Oh my. Time for whiskey petes. #leroy”

The final table payouts were as follows:

1 Brent Hanks $117,760
2 Gavin Griffin $82,640

Pat Steele has won the 2013 Heartland Poker Tour Michigan, after defeating a field of 462 players over four days to lift the title, and collect the $155,636 first place prize.

The $1,500 NL tournament created a prize pool worth $ 622,280 and attracted a whole slew of amateurs and pros alike to the Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort, Mount Pleasant. Amongst the notable names competing in the competition was Greg “FossilMan” Raymer, “Cowboy” Mike Harris, Dash Dudley, and Craig Casino, all of whom failed to cash. Coming away with some reward for their efforts was Bruce Swart (44th for $3,576), Stan Jablonski (37th for $3,576) and Elliot Hebden (18th for $6,358).

By the time the final table of nine had been reached, one big name still remained in the guise of the 2009 WSOP Main Event winner Joe Cada, who exclaimed at the time; “Winning the HPT title would mean a lot. You play a tournament to win.” The 25 year old pro was then dealt A-10 and proceeded to eliminate Rudy (2-2) Ballard in 6th for $25,167, but in the end could only make it as far as a 4th place finish ($43,710) when his A-7 fell to the A-9 of Tom Midena.

Following last woman standing Penelope Banhidy’s exit in 3rd for $62,917, the heads-up phase of the competition then got underway between Pat Steele and Tom Midena. A mere 22 hands later and it was all over with Steele’s A-7 defeating his opponent’s J-9, with the board having rolled out K-8-8-7-Q. Nevertheless, Tom Midena was quick to praise the Heartland Poker Tour, and commented

“HPT has been great. They probably have one of the best structures out there for poker tours.”

The final table payouts were as follows:

1 Pat Steele $155,636
2 Tom Midena $96,031
3 Penelope Banhidy $62,917
4 Joe Cada $43,710
5 Adam Bacon $32,452
6 Rudy Ballard $25,167
7 Mark Davis $21,789
8 Sai Mudduluru $17,882

John Hayes has won the Mid-States Poker Tour Northern Lights, after defeating a field of 160 players over two days to capture the title, and collect the $43,473 first place prize. Commenting later on his remarkable victory, Hayes said: “It felt really good to take down an MSPT event. I have played quite a few and have had some good runs, but hadn’t been able to walk away with one. I’m not going to take this bracelet off for a while.”

The poker pro had previously won a massive $2,419,359 playing online under the screen name JohnnyGstaks, but after “Black Friday” in the US had to hit the brick-and-mortar casinos to continue plying his trade. It seems Hayes has managed that transition successfully, and now boasts $229,705 in live tournament earnings, $195,342 of which has come since 2012.

John Hayes was in great form at the $1k Main Event held at the Northern Lights Casino in Walker, Minnesota, and cruised through Day 1 before entering Sunday’s final day of action third overall in chips. Getting busy straight away, John Hayes then mixed it up with the chip leader Christian Pham, who tank-folded to Haye’s five-bet preflop shove, before the duo tangled once more later with Hayes (K-Q) hitting a K against Pham’s A-Q to
add further to his stack.

To his credit, a depleted Pham still managed to make it through to the final table, where he eventually finished in 8th place for $5,339. As the tournament then progressed to three-handed play, a dramatic last hand saw Bill Romer (A-Q), Reg Powell (A-5) and John Hayes (5-2) all-in on a 3-2-4 flop, only for a 5 and 2 to fall on turn and river to make Hayes a full-house and thus hand him the tournament.

The final table payouts were as follows:

1 John Hayes $43,473
2 Reg Powell $24,405
3 Bill Romer $15,253
4 Brett Kuznia $11,288
5 Stevermer $9,152
6 Jason Bender $6,864
7 Mario Filippi $6,101
8 Christian Pham $5,339
9 Clarence Warner $4,576

Chino Rheem has won the 2013 World Poker Tour $25,000 Championship, after defeating a field of 146 players over six days to capture the title, and collect the $1,150,297 first place prize.

With his latest victory at the Bellagio in Las Vegas, Chino Rheem now takes his live tournament winnings to $7,116,471. However, just like runner-up Erick Lindgren, he has discovered that being a successful professional poker player also requires managing your bankroll carefully and above all steering clear of a myriad of other gambling pursuits, such as sport betting. Commenting on what he now intends to do with his million dollar score, Chino Rheem explained:

“So [this win] was very special to me. Because I’ve been giving a lot of chances in my life, and before when I had score I would tell myself that I wouldn’t put myself in the same position, and I still found myself in the same position. Hopefully I can have a better outlook on life and what I’m going to do with it..I’m definitely going to try to not be so impulsive, and just make better life decisions.”

Ironically, as the six-man final table played down to the heads-up phase, it was the two controversial pros who had previously earned the scorn of their peers over unpaid debts, who ended up squaring off against one another for the title. Eventually, the tournament was decided with Cheem (K-9) and Lindgren (Q-9) all-in preflop, and after the board rolled out A-4-4-3-8, Chino Rheem was crowned the WPT champion. Later, showing great empathy towards his heads-up rival, Rheem commented:

“I want the public to realize: Don’t judge unless you really understand or you know. Erick’s a great guy. Yeah he’s had his ups and downs, but who hasn’t? Who hasn’t made mistakes? He’s just trying to make better with his life doing what he’s very good at doing.”

The final table payouts were as follows:

1: Chino Rheem – $1,150,297
2: Erick Lindgren – $650,275
3: Jonathan Roy – $421,800
4: Matt Hyman – $289,988
5: Brandon Steven – $223,203
6: David Peters – $173,993

Viktor “Isildur1” Blom has won the PokerStars Spring Championship of Poker (SCOOP) Main Event. One year ago he stunned the poker world with back to back SCOOP wins in events 2 and 3, and now he’s won the big one and almost $1.1m in prize money.

He was one of the top chip leaders throughout the final table of the $10k buy in event, but his stack showed the expected volatility as the play got down to three handed. The heads up battle was against Dutch tournament specialist Noah “Exclusive” Boeken.

Blom soon built a three-to-one chip lead and the duel ended after less than an hour when Blom’s Qc-Tc beat Boeken’s Ks-5c. Blom’s dream flop came Js-Kc-9s giving him a straight against Boeken’s top pair. All the chips went in and Isildur1 became the champion.

Boeken is well known in Holland for the television shows, Veronica Poker and Poker Kings NL which he hosts with Marcel Lüske and until Feb 2012 he was a PokerStars Team Pro

Twenty three year old Blom is a former PokerStars pro and one of three Team Pros on Full Tilt. He is also one of the most active and exciting high-stakes cash game players in the world. According to High StakesDB he is up over $700k in online cash games this year.

In 2012 he had his first seven figure live tournament win when he took $1.25m for first place in the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA) $100,000 No Limit Hold’em – Super High Roller Event.

He will always be known for his unbelievable heads up nosebleed cash matches on the old Full Tilt, where he took part in all ten of the largest cash game pots in online poker history. In those days he concealed his identity, now the whole poker world knows exactly who he is.

Professional poker player Daniel Negreanu, who has won a large number of live poker tournaments throughout the course of his brilliant poker career, won his first online poker championship title recently. The 38-year-old poker pro won the 39th event of the PokerStars Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP), which happened to be a $5,200 PL Omaha 6-max tournament. Since it was a high-stakes event, the player field was just 180, but it was quite a tough field to beat as it comprised top poker pros such as Justin Bonomo, Shaun Deeb, Ike Haxton, Joe Ebanks, David Baker, Steven Chidwick, and Jason Mercier.

When he reached the final table, Negreanu was the chip leader, having a stack of 331,441 chips. The final table play soon reached the heads-up phase, with Negreanu playing gainst FA_Morgoth. When the heads-up match began, Negreanu had 764,712 chips while FA_Morgoth had 135,288 chips. The heads-up match comprised just 5 hands, at the end of which Negreanu emerged as the champion.

During the initial three hands, Negreanu grabbed the blinds. When the fourth hand was being played, a considerable portion from FA_Morgoth’s chip stack had transferred to Negreanu’s stack. When the fifth hand was being played, Negreanu raised and FA_Morgoth called. Negreanu’s opponent checked when the flop showed Four of Hearts, Five of Diamonds, and Two of Diamonds. Negreanu then placed a bet of 12,000 chips, which FA_Morgoth raised to 60,000, leaving just a few chips in his own stack. While Negreanu got a Flush Draw and a Nut Straight, FA_Morgoth showed a Straight Draw and a Top Pair. Since neither the turn nor the river helped FA_Morgoth improve his hand, Negreanu ended up grabbing his first online poker title.

Shortly after winning the first place prize of $216,000, Negreanu tweeted: “Won my first ever major online poker tournament. This last two months has been the sickest run of my career. So thankful and SO FUN!”

Negreanu has had a lucrative 2013. In April, he reached the final table of the inaugural edition of the WSOP’s Asia Pacific Main Event and won more than one million dollars. Early this May, he finished in the fourth position in the EPT Grand Final, winning a grand prize of $420,910. Later, he finished in the seventh position in the WPT World Championship, winning a prize of $137,085. He also won a small cash prize for finishing fourth in a preliminary WSOP APAC event.

Thomas Beckstead has won the Card Player Poker Tour Bicycle Casino main event, after defeating a field of 369 players on his way to capturing the title, and collecting the $102,010 first-place prize.

According to the Hendon Mob database, the 27 year-old Californian pro only cashed in at his first live tournament this year, and with his latest victory in Los Angeles now takes his tournament earnings to $146,129. Commenting later on his win, Beckstead explained:

“[This is] pretty much cloud nine for me. Since I was about nineteen I’ve played poker for a good part of my income. When I started to play tournaments again this year, a lot of it was because I wanted to get that six-figure score and to get that bracelet, that trophy..some hardware to put on the mantle at home. For me it’s been kind of a long journey, and this is definitely a little bit of vindication.”

By the time the $1,100 buy-in tournament reached its last table of nine, five-months pregnant local lady Nichoel Jurgens was the chip leader, with the “Live At The Bike” regular cash-game commentator then making it all the way through to heads-up play.

Unfortunately for Jurgens, she was unable to overcome her last opponent and the final hand was played with Jurgens re-raising all-in preflop holding A-6 to Beckstead’s pocket jacks. The board subsequently rolled out K-9-6-5-8 to relegate her to a runner-up finish worth $52,110, while Thomas Beckstead was crowned the 2013 Card Player Poker Tour Bicycle Casino $1,100 main event champion.

The final table payouts were as follows:

1 Thomas Beckstead $102,010
2 Nichoel Jurgens $52,110

Colorado’s Roger Martin has won the Heartland Poker Tour Albuquerque, after defeating a field of 86 players on his way to capturing the title, and collecting the $39,082 first-place prize. The $1,650 No Limit Hold’em Re-entry event took place at the Route 66 Casino in New Mexico and created a prize pool worth $122,130. By the time the tournament reached it last nine players, the biggest names headlining the final table was Team Ivey’s Allen Kessler and HPT Mile High Poker Open winner Craig Casino.

First to leave the arena was Charles Vargas whose pocket kings ran into the pocket aces of Roger Martin. Despite hitting a king on the K-10-8 flop, an ace on the turn sealed Vargas’ fate and so he exited in 9th for $4,641.

John Michalak (A-A) then eliminated Thomas Montoya (7-7) in 8th for $5,252, and after Norman Michalek was dispatched to the rail in 7th ($5,862), Roger Martin (10-10) knocked-out John Michalak (A-K) in 6th for $5,862.

Next, Craig Casino (A-J) called Kris Wagner’s (A-6) preflop shove and subsequently eliminated him in 5th ($8,549) when the board ran out K-J-6-8-5, but unfortunately for him was eliminated next in 4th ($11,602) by Cruz Baca. Continuing his run, Baca (Q-J) then did likewise to Allen Kessler (A-A) on a Q-7-6-J-K board to get heads-up against Roger Martin.

As the heads-up battle commenced, Cruz Baca held a 3 to 1 chip lead over Martin, but the Colorado man was able to eek out a lead when the final hand was played with Martin (A-Q) and Baca (9-9) all-in preflop. The board subsequently rolled out Q-6-5-Q-2 to relegate Cruz Baca to a runner-up finish worth $24,426, while Roger Martin was crowned the champion.

The final table payouts were as follows:

1 Roger Martin – $39,082
2 Cruz Baca – $24,426

US pro John Beauprez has won the WSOP $1,500 Six-Handed No Limit Hold’em tournament (event#4), after defeating a field of 1,069 players over three days to capture a prestigious gold bracelet, and collect the $324,764 first place prize.

With his victory in Las Vegas, the 28 year-old business owner now takes his live career earnings to $581,327, but even more so than the money, winning a WSOP bracelet has helped Beauprez realize his poker dream, and as he explains: “[The bracelet is] what every poker player grinds for. I’ve had this dream of playing heads-up for a gold bracelet a thousand times, but nothing matches the actual experience. It happens really fast and the whole time you are there, it really feels like a dream. You just don’t wake up. It doesn’t get much better than that.”

The $1,500 NL event attracted a whole slew of pros to the Rio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Amongst the notable names securing a cash for themselves was Robert Salaburu in 100th ($2,871), Humberto Brenes in 70th ($3,391), Jonathan Duhamel in 44th ($4,892), Shannon Shorr in 40th ($5,599), Yevgeniy Timoshenko in 30th ($7,850), and Matt Salsberg in 21st ($9,640).

By the time the final table of six had been set, two previous WSOP bracelet winners were still in contention in the guise of Keven Stammen and Joe Cada. Also competing for the bracelet was notable pros Manig Loeser, Eric Blair and Mike Mustafa. Eventually, however, John Beauprez would defeat German pro Manig Loeser heads-up to claim the glory for himself.

Commenting later on what originally drew him to the game of poker, Beauprez explained: “Poker is something where you can get back what you deserve, which means what you put into it. That’s what I always liked about poker, that it’s the quintessential example of entrepreneurship. If you work harder and are better than your opponent, you are going to make money at it.”

The final table payouts were as follows:

1st: John Beauprez – $324,764
2nd: Manig Loeser – $200,698
3rd: Eric Blair – $127,300
4th: Joe Cada – $83,558

Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympian ever, dismisses talk he's coming back to compete in the pool. But he is competing in an international event, playing in his first World Series of Poker.

Phelps did not cash in his first tournament, a $5,000 no-limit hold'em event he spontaneously decided to enter last week. The WSOP in Las Vegas runs through July 15, giving Phelps plenty of chances to improve his game.

“It's kind of weird,” Phelps told Card Player. "I wasn't even going to play (the first event). I just wanted to come over and see everything and somehow these guys talked me into playing. Antonio [Esfandiari] and JG (Jeff Gross) told me we should just throw in a buy-in and see what happens at your first World Series event.”

Phelps is no poker novice. He made a final table at the 2008 Caesars Palace Classic, winning $5,213, though he denies a report he once won $100,000 in a cash game.

In addition to navigating top-flight competition, Phelps must deal with a constant swarm of fans and autograph seekers.

Friendly with several poker pros, Phelps said it would be sweet to outperform them this summer at the WSOP.

“I've never been out here [before] and all these guys always seem like they're having so much fun when they play,” he said. "If I ever win a bracelet before [they] do, they're going to be really pissed. So we'll see what happens.”

Nine-time WSOP bracelet winner Phil Ivey is on the hunt this summer for Bracelet number 10 and he has a shot at it in WSOP Event #18, $1000 No-Limit Hold’em.

When Day 3 resumes at 1PM PST, the final 14 will return to the felt to crown a champion. Despite having a below-average stack, Ivey currently sits in 9th. All eyes will be on Phil as he looks to become just the 4th person in history to claim 10 or more WSOP Bracelets.

Standing in his way is massive chipleader Taylor Paur, but talented Canadian bracelet winner Daniel Idema and eleven others are determined to take it themselves. History is on their side, as noted by WSOP.com, as all of Ivey’s previous bracelet wins have come in disciplines other than No-Limit Hold’em.

A Greek micro-stakes online player has just made the biggest score of his poker life, after winning a whopping $103,800 whilst playing at a PokerStars $0.02/$0.05 cash table. However, the huge win was all about being at the right place at the right time, as ‘microulis69′ was lucky enough to have been dealt PokerStars’ 100 Billionth Hand.

PokerStars first launched in 2001 and has since grown to become the world’s largest online poker room with earnings of more than $1 billion each year. As part of its 100 Billionth Hand celebrations, the site subsequently announced a special payout for those players seated at one of their virtual tables when the hand was dealt, and at the time when the jackpot was released 400,000 players were online hoping to be the lucky winner.

Just before the milestone hand took place on Thursday, the table froze and a message appeared on the screen, announcing: “We are about to deal the 100 Billionth Hand on PokerStars at this table! We have paused the dealing to allow for spectators to find the table and watch the hand. A host will arrive shortly to guide you through the hand. Every player at the table will walk away with at least $10,000, and the winner of the hand will win at least $100,000!”

After the hand was dealt at the 6-Max cash table, microulis69 (J-5) made second pair on an A-2-J-9-10 board to claim the lion’s share of the $169,260 payout, with his fellow competitors HeyitsClay (K-6), Mayers666 (7-3), ModyMiss (2-8), doc836 (Q-6), GlassGagguas (K-3) splitting the remaining $65,460 between themselves.

Here’s a look at what each of the players then received:

microulis69: $103,800
doc836: $13,440
HeyitsClay: $13,440
GlassGagguas: $13,360
MoodyMiss: $12,760
Mayers666 $12,460

In addition to these lucky players, a further $830,790 in cash rewards was distributed amongst the 9,471 other PokerStars players in action at its cash tables while the 100-billionth hand was dealt.
