Playing multiple tables may allow you to learn to make quicker decisions, but they may not be the best ones. Fewer tables allow you to observe players more carefully and get more information. This will lead to better decisions and hopefully more profits. Just my 2 cents.
Actually, there is an optimum number of tables to play, and it depends on the player. Consider a pro who plays one table and earns $40 an hour. If he playes 4 tables he might do worse than that on each table but if he only earns $15 per table, combined he will earn $60 an hour. So he makes more money overall. His play may be worse on each table but he's making more money! Over time, he will find the best balance for the optimum number of tables to play. That's why they multi-table, because it increases their expected win rate overall.
