US authorities have arrested the head of online betting website Full Tilt Poker and charged him with a scheme to defraud banks and misleading customers about the security of their funds.

The Justice Department said Raymond Bitar, the chief executive of the Irish-based firm, was arrested Monday at John F. Kennedy International Airport.

He had been charged last year with gambling, bank fraud, and money laundering offenses in connection with the operation of Full Tilt Poker.

On his return, prosecutors unsealed a new indictment charging Bitar with defrauding poker customers by lying to them about the security of their funds.

Also named in the indictment was Nelson Burtnick, the head of Full Tilt Poker's payment processing department, who was originally charged on April 15, 2011.

Bitar said in an email to employees that was posted on an online betting forum that he had "returned to the US to deal with civil and criminal case that are pending against me in New York."

"We have all worked hard over the last 15 months to preserve Full Tilt's assets and potential in order to provide for the repayment of all players, and that continues to be our top priority," he said.

The owners of PokerStars have filed a motion to see the charges made against them by the United States government dismissed. The company is hoping that the Black Friday charges are dropped and many believe that the dismissal will help the online poker room continued their rumored deal with Full Tilt Poker.

The motion was filed by the group of companies that own PokerStars and the motion states that the charges were made on grounds that are insufficient. The motion follows claims made just a few days ago by Howard Lederer and Rafe Furst the co-founders of online poker room Full Tilt Poker.

The recent update to the software for Party Poker has actually removed players’ access to the high stakes PLO and NLHE games without announcing this removal in advance.

This new software update and this removal have spurred a lot of discussions about this move, especially on the very famous message board called twoplustwo. Party Poker has responded to these discussions by saying that such move has been taken for the best interest of the users and loyal players of Party Poker.

The company also stated that this move is aiming to improve the poker experience and poker ecology as it is going to minimize and reduce the numbers of sharks. It is also going to allow the bank roll of the recreational player to last for a longer period of time.

The Brasilia Room today is the home to Doyle Brunson. The 10-time bracelet winner started off the day strong and peaked around 130,000, but he finished Level 7 on a down note after taking a tough beat in a 180,000-chip pot. After a flop of A-9-5, Brunson's opponent bet and Doyle called. The turn brought another 9. Brunson checked, his opponent bet, Brunson raised and his opponent moved all-in. Brunson instantly called and showed 5-5. His opponent got up from his chair, began to collect himself and showed A-K. His opponent said "Nice hand," and as Brunson was essentially reaching for the chips in the center of the table, another nine hit the river, giving opponent a better full house.

The table erupted and Brunson's opponent simply said, "Sorry." Brunson counted out the chips, sent them to his opponent and just continued on. On the very next hand, Brunson got some chips back while holding 9-high as his opponents two pair was counterfeit on the river. He went back to work. His opponent did not.

On April 15, 2011, the US issued its online poker indictments, with the government’s attempts to bring the perpetrators to justice having gained some momentum of late with a number of high profile court cases.

Last month, Utah banker John Campos, 59, received a 3 month jail sentence for his part in processing $200 million of online poker transactions, some of which was for Full Tilt Poker. The beginning of July then saw Full Tilt Poker CEO Ray Bitar, 40, arrested with $350 million still owed by the company to players worldwide.

Now, Absolute Poker co-founder Brent Beckley, 32, has received a stretch of 14 months behind bars from the U.S. District Court in Manhattan, after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit bank and wire fraud. Apparently, Beckley’s lenient sentence was helped by his cooperation with authorities and the fact his fraudulent actions didn’t cause any financial institutions to lose money. Meanwhile, Absolute Poker customers are still out of pocket and are owed around $60 million. The U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan, insisted Beckley deserved some jail time, explaining:

A documentary film based on the Super User Scandal in which players were cheated out of millions of dollars at UltimateBet in the mid-2000′s is in the making.

Scott Bell, a film maker who is also a major contributor to public online poker forums under the name ElevenGrover, has been conducting research and writing about the cheating scandal for quite some time. Bell told QuadJacks that he is planning to release the documentary on DVD and video-on-demand sometime in late fall or perhaps early winter.

In 2008, UltimateBet released a statement admitting that company insiders were found to be cheating by using computer software that allowed hole cards of players to be displayed. The company insisted it had removed the unauthorized software in February of 2008 and issued refunds to various players who were affected by the cheating. Later that year, UB’s licensing body, the Kahnawake Gaming Commission (KGC), came to the conclusion that Russ Hamilton, a UB consultant and professional player who won the WSOP Main Event in 1994, was the main perpetrator of the scheme. The original amount that players were cheated out of was said to be $6.1 million dollars, but in 2009, the KGC increased the amount to in excess of $22 million.

According to a recent article posted by Poker Listings, online poker media outlet, PokerNews-com, could soon be acquired by PokerStars. PokerNews has struggled for over a year now, since the Black Friday incident. The media outlet has cut staff and accepted advertising below cost from below average services to try and pull themselves back up in the industry.

PokerNews is considered one of the largest and reliable poker media sites online today and it would make perfect sense for PokerStars to take over the site. PokerStars is working hard to strengthen their spot at the largest online poker room in the world and this would further their position.

Both PokerStars and PokerNews have worked together closely over the past few years and the relationship has only gotten stronger. PokerStars Blog has posted PokerNews live updates for some time now and PokerStars is highly featured at the online news site.

Elisabeth Hille is a top poker pro that did quite well in this year’s World Series of Poker Main Event. Hille was so close to becoming the first woman to reach the Final Table of the WSOP Main Event since 1995 but finished in 11th place. Both Hille and Gaelle Baumann, who finished in 10th, were so close to reaching this goal but in the end it was not to be. However, Hille’s performance was not to be forgotten and Hille has now signed a poker deal with online poker room Betfair Poker.

Betfair announced the news of Hille signing with the site before the event was over. Betfair commented in a press release: “Betfair Poker is proud to announce that they have captured the signature of young Norwegian poker player Elisabeth Hille as a Team Betfair Ambassador.”
