Calvin Ayre founded Bodog in 1993, providing gaming-related services to other Internet sights. By the late 1990s, Bodog has launched its own online gaming portal. At its height, the Canadian website was one of the top online sportsbooks, casino sites, and card rooms on the Internet.
Bodog made Calvin Ayre into a billionaire. The flamboyant businessman was one of Canada’s richest citizens. By 2003, the U.S. Justice Department was investigating the tycoon. With the inception of the Poker Boom in 2003, the site was also one of the most visible manifestations of that boom.
Bodog chose to continue in the American market, but Calvin Ayre did not. The billionaire announced Bodog proper would no longer operate in the United States, but he licensed the name to the Morris Mohawk Gaming Company. Under the Bodog license, Morris Mohawk continued in the US market until 2011, maintaining a visible presence and making billions of dollars.
