British poker professional Jake Cody took the top spot in the World Poker Tour London Classic this weekend, earning a very nice £273,783 for his efforts and probably more than a few pints bought for him. If you've not heard of the 21-year-old pro before, don't be surprised: he's come out of relative obscurity to a bonafide winner in a very, very brief amount of time. Cody learned the game from fellow Brit Matt Perrins, playing in £5 cash games and becoming known as a bit of a local shark.
Moving from cash games to tournaments was an easy move for the thoughtful player to make, and the money followed. In no time, he was taking down smaller tournaments in his home country and working his way up the rankings when suddenly he took the top spot in the Deauville top on the European Poker Tour this past January. That win got him over $1,000,000 and set tongues to wagging. While this week's victory wasn't easy, it was surely a sign that there's more to the pro than a few fluke wins.
As far as the London Poker Classic goes, Cody beat Nichlas Mattson in heads-up for the title, playing QhQs against AdQd. Nichlas won £176,979 for taking second place and the rest of the final table was as follows: Bruce Atkinson (£93,316); Kristoffer Thorsson (£56,311); Giovanni Safina (£42,233); Sandiep Khosa (£34,189); Fabian Quoss (£26,144); Gareth Teatum (£18,100).
