Poker is about making decisions, pure and simple. Understanding how and why you should make certain decisions can help you perform much better in any environment, whether it's a quick hand or two in an online cash game or if you're playing in an event like the WSOP. Let's discuss pot odds and how they can strengthen your game.

The simplest explanation of pot odds works as follows: compare the total number of unknown cards to how many outs you have, then perform some simple division. Sounds easy, right?

There are four cards of every value and 13 of every suit, meaning that you have 52 cards (of course.) Let's say you have an open-ended straight draw on the flop and there are two different values of cards that will give you a winning hand. Two values by four suits means that there are 8 outs.

What do these outs mean? They help you figure out how much needs to be in the pot for you to bet. In the first case, there are 47 unknown cards and eight will help you. 47 divided by eight = 5.875. You'd need win around six times as much as you invested to be in the pot for playing this hand to be worth your while.

Spend some time practicing pot odds when you're playing poker online, especially if you're not involved in a hand and can focus on the numbers. Understanding good betting logic and how pot odds reflect when you should and shouldn't go in on a hand can help you greatly on your road to Las Vegas!

The world's largest poker site has a new on-line championship at three levels, and Europe's largest poker site has a few promotions of its own.
PokerStars may be the world's largest poker site but it has arguably the most useless press office, or perhaps it is only certain correspondents it doesn't give the time of day. Therefore, there will be no comment here about the claim/rumour that it is about to take over Full Tilt, which is currently in still in limbo after an Easter Resurrection failed to materialise.
Having said that, the support staff on this site are friendly, helpful and extremely prompt, but if you are interested more in action than chat, check out SCOOP. The acronym stands for Spring Championship Of Online Poker, and the series consists of no less than 40 events between May 6 and May 20. SCOOP was first held in 2009, and is supplementary to rather than a replacement for the sites WCOOP - work out what that means yourself!

The old adage that if you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life rings true for some. Just ask two Parsippany brothers.

As teenagers, Arash and Bahbak (aka Bobby) Oboodi started playing poker for fun with their buddies and in online games. In time, both started winning what they considered unbelievable sums of money. Today, Arash is developing into one of the top online players in the nation while big brother Bobby, who plays in casinos, has earned more than a million dollars from the game.

Another week in Internet poker politics. Another batch of delicious news bytes. Time to strap your speed-read on, BLUFFers.

Let’s kick things off with the Capitol Hill Co-Sponsor Count. Since last year, Texas Rep. Joe Barton’s flagging Internet poker bill, H.R. 2366, has drawn 30 politicos to its banner, edging out California Rep. John Campbell’s moribund competing Internet gambling bill, H.R. 1174, which has drawn 29.

GovTrack.us, a Web site that tracks legislation in Congress, generously gives H.R. 2366 a nine percent chance of being enacted before the session ends in January 2013, even-steven with H.R. 1174, which was also given a nine percent chance at succeeding. (Yeah, right.)

G-poker reports that Groupe Bernard Tapie (GBT), the investor that failed last week in negotiations to purchase Full Tilt Poker, announced it’s interested in creating a new online poker site with the money it had budgeted for Full Tilt. According to an email from GBT, which was leaked to the public this week, the new poker site would offer to refund Full Tilt Poker players still waiting for repayment – if they agree to play at the new site.

Carmen Electra is looking ace as she poses with a top-ranking pair in these saucy snaps, reported British daily The Sun on Thursday.

The American beauty was using her famous assets to promote Pokerist online poker games.

Carmen, 40, recently stood in for Amanda Holden on Britain's Got Talent after the Brit actress gave birth.

But fellow judge Alesha Dixon said ex-Baywatch star Carmen didn't make any effort to get on with the rest of the panel.

Alesha explained: “She didn’t seem interested in getting to know us.

“Carmen didn’t give much back. She seemed a little bit more comfortable by day three.”

And the BGT audiences didn't warm to Carmen either, with crowds booing her as she entered the venue.

A source said: “As soon as she got out of the car people were booing and shouting ‘you’re s***, who are you?’ and ‘we want Amanda’.

“Carmen was mortified. She was really nervous on the panel too.

What do the pros say about the upcoming Spring Championship of Online Poker? And by the way, can they give us some advice on how to plan and play them? That was what we asked Team PokerStars Pros Celina Lin, Ana Marquez, Fatima Moreira de Melo, and Viviam Im. Friend of PokerStars player Charlotte Van Brabander also weighed in with some comments on how to make this the best year ever for female players. They gave us lots of great tips, but first, if you're unaware of how the series works, here are a few details to keep in mind.

SCOOP runs from May 6-20 with 40 events and a wide range of games available. The guaranteed prize pool for the event is a massive $30,000,000. Another thing that makes it so attractive for players is the fact that there are low, medium, and high buy-ins for every event, making it easier for new players and those with limited bankrolls to win a championship. Satellites are running for each event, and you can get into the action and win a championship title for as little as $0.25. And to add icing to the cake, in addition to the huge payouts, there's a commemorative watch awarded to each champion.

As an added plus for PokerStars Women players, there is a $5.50 women only satellite on May 20 that will award seats to the $109 SCOOP Main Event, with five seats guaranteed. It's tournament 549526036 at 13:00 ET.

So get ready, take notes, and start charting your course to a championship win.

He was six foot three, but taller in his high-heeled boots and 10-gallon hat. The hat was wrapped in the skin of a rattle-snake that he claimed to have killed himself. He'd been gambling in dusty American states since the 1940s. He once rode a camel through a casino for a bet. He was the world's first famous poker player. I wanted him to be perfect. And he just wasn't.

Or was he? It's so hard to know when you're being bluffed.

When Amarillo Slim, the great gambling icon, died last week (aged 83, of colon cancer), a newspaper asked me to write his obituary. I had to say no. A good obituary is detached, distilled and punchy; it tells you who a person was. I couldn't do it. I don't know who he was. I read his obituary in the Independent and it simply didn't mention the big problem. Perhaps the writer didn't know.

It has been reported that IGT poker Network that was formerly known as Etraction has suffered from an 8 % dip. IGT has stated that this dip is a direct result of the suspension of the operations of Purple Lounge which belongs to Media Corp. It backed these allegations by stating that in February, the average number of players who played on real cash games reached 1200 online players. After the Purple Lounge demise, the number of players playing on cash games decreased down to 800, which resulted in the 8 % dip mentioned above.

When it comes to online poker network reorganizations, things usually happen in one of three ways: one network buys another, a poker room leaves a network, or a poker room joins a network. On Monday, though, a significant move was made that did not fit any of these categories. Yes, Lock Poker announced that it will be leaving the Merge Gaming Network, but at the same time, it will be acquiring the Cake Poker Network and creating a new online poker network, Revolution Gaming.

Recently, the development team at Table Ninja released its latest update, Version 1.2.121.0, which includes a number of fixes related to Zoom Poker on PokerStars. The newest release also addresses the problem with SNG Sensei that was causing issues on several regional clients.

Table Ninja customers who have been utilizing an older version of the program should download the latest versions of PokerStars and Table Ninja in order to enjoy correct functionality.

Zoom Poker, implemented recently by PokerStars, has taken the online poker community by storm. It can be compared to Full Tilt's Rush Poker in that players are placed into a pool where they are immediately switched to another table once their action in the present hand has concluded.

The Isle of Man took a step closer to regulating live poker last week when it passed the second reading of the Casino (Amendment) Bill 2012 which will allow for large live poker tournaments.

The low-tax island currently acts as a regulatory centre for online poker hosting PokerStars headquarters but live poker is illegal on the island outside of the small casino there.

The new bill would allow for large scale tournaments to be held at any venue on the island.

Eddie Lowery, a Treasury member arguing for the bill, said, “I believe the Isle of Man would be doing a dis-service to itself if it didn’t participate and take advantage of its reputation as well regulated in this area, as far as gambling is concerned."

Opponents of the bill said they did not know what the economic benefits of the bill would be and that it was ‘a shot in the dark to see what happened,” according to the Isle of Man Today website.

Sitting around the table with friends or family playing a simple game of poker is not at all an uncommon pastime. In fact, it is a rarity one meets someone who does not know how to play poker, which was the simple point of Douglas Tirola’s new documentary, 4th Row Films’ “All In: The Poker Movie.”

In a recent interview with The Eastern Echo, Tirola explained the idea for the documentary came to him when he was on a flight from Los Angeles to New York, as he was hired to film the largest poker event in New York City. The plane he was on was showing the World Series of Poker, and he began to see that poker had made a huge comeback.
