Roman Polanski will not be extradited to the United States to face the music now that the Swiss government has denied a United States extradition request for the famed director. The Swiss government had said that Polanski is now a free man as far as they are concerned.
Roman pled guilty in 1978 to one count of unlawful sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl, but fled to France before he could be sentenced. However, the crime, in its actuality was drugging, sodomizing and performing sexual acts on a 13-year-old Samantha Gailey, According to the victim testimony, she had repeatedly told Polanski, "no." The "unlawful sex with a minor" charge was a plea deal, but Polanski fled to France because it seemed like the judge was rethinking the deal after reading the victim testimony.
For the thirty-year-0ld crime, Polanski was arrested back in September on his way to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award. After posting $4.5 million-dollar bail, Polanski has under house arrest at his chalet in Switzerland.
The U.S. lodged a formal extradition request at the end of October. In its decision, the Swiss justice department said that the extradition request was "undermined by a serious fault," because the U.S. had failed to turn over certain documents requested by the Swiss government.
Swiss Justice Minister Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf said she had decided against extradition because of these faults and also because Polanski had for years come to Switzerland in good faith.
"He is a free man since 11:30 today," she told a news conference in Switzerland's capital Berne. "He can go to France or to Poland, anywhere where he will not be arrested," she said.
