To track my poker tournaments, I just use notepad and it works fine too 😁

Notepad is awesome, I use it daily so I dont forget anything and giving myself some thoughts that I would forget if I didnt type it down.
Another good free software opposed to microsoft excel is "openoffice calc". Just like microsoft office - openoffice is a complete package and not only with "Calc". You decide which one you need.
Open office is open source and therefor free.
