If you're talking about freeroll vs. micro stakes buy-ins, probably pretty much the same: tighten up early as there will be a lot of wild & wooly play the first few levels or so. I attribute the maniacal early play that you're likely witnessing to the fact that these people have no "skin in the game"; their own money on the line, in other words. And if they don't want to spend the time trying to grind through the game they go for glory or go for broke early. . .
The people who win freeroll money are usually the same ones you'll see in the lowest micro stakes games and the play may be only slightly better as they may still not see their freeroll won money as out of their own pocket. . .
Move up the staked ladder a bit and I think you'll find the play much more sensible and saner. Just my own opinion. . .

1) Avoid the land mines: avoid putting anything into the pot early in the tourney from an early position unless you prepared to go ALL-IN. Your going to get stomped on.
2)Capitalize: Know that when you have the strong hand you are going to get action early. Capitalize on this. They will eagerly throw chips your way with long shots.
3)Settle down: After the furious first hour, play your normal game. Settle down and go into a survival/chip accumulation mode. You goal is to make the money now.
4)Bubble boy: everyone hates to be this so use that to your advantage. Most of the loose cannons are gone by now so agression here can be profitable.
5) congrats. you've made it to the money. Now its just like any other tourney.
