Lawmakers are considering a bill that would force gambling facilities to withhold winnings from people who owe child support.
The language of the bill would require gambling facilities to subtract the amount of money someone owes in child support from their gambling winnings. That money would be turned over to the Department of Health and Human Services.
Hollywood Slots supports the intent of the bill, but not the way it is crafted. General Manager Jon Johnson said the bill should include all large retail transactions. He also said his employees shouldn't be asked to confront customers about owing money.
"My employees are not trained to collect money," Johnson told NEWS CENTER. "It's in a very public place with lots of people around and this person who is confronted could get extremely agitated."
Bill sponsor Senator Deborah Simpson said a similar bill went into affect in Colorado last year. She said Colorado has collected more than $300,000 in back child support since passing the law.
