I too run a forum, and registered for a freeroll competition.
Sadly, like yourselves, the PW got leaked and the freeroll became flooded with thieves which meant I had 140 registered members and 400 non members taking part. That totally defeated the object of the freeroll as it was meant to be a treat for the regulars.
I contacted FULL TILT, who were superb and cancelled ALL registrations and the new PW I gave will now not be released until two hours before the event.
If you find you are having the same problem then it may pay you to do that a couple of times. Cancel all registrations and hold back on the PW until later on.
That way only the people that should be there will be there.
Just an idea.
Thank you for the suggestion
I don't think you can really avoid them..They'll be just all hacking your site 2 hours befor the tourney... :dirol
Its almost impossible to stop the PW thieves, its usually an "inside" job. Some unscrupulous members will pass it on to friends and it turns into a snowball effect... I'm a member on other forums and I have not seen any of them counter it effectively. You could try what WePokerYou does, they release the PW about 2 minutes before start time...but its like sticking a finger in a hole to stop the dam from breaking..lol
I like the idea of posting the password later but, I've been a member of a couple of forums that did the last five minute thing and their servers crashed and made it worse for the regulars who then couldn't get in so I'm not sure if there is a remedy for this but anything is worth a try once
one forum makes you sign up to be on an "active players" list and you MUST stay active month to month to stay on that list. you have until the end of the month to sign up and start playing games for the following month.. meaning i can sign up right now (jan 25th) but wouldn't be eligible to play the forum games till feb 1st.
the only players who receive the password are those who follow these requirements. its one of the forums i love to play at the most simply because they have nice, small fields.
i've seen other forums use a "credit" system.. i really dont think this works because you're only going to get a ton of bs posting which makes forums look ugly.
the next best thing, in my opinion is making it strictly for people who are active in your forum.. 50 posts, 100 posts.. i wouldnt go much higher than that though.. and they have to be QUALITY posts.. no one or two words posts would count. my other favorite forum does this and it works really well for them..

That is about the best you can do to protect yourself. Consequently if you spot a non member at a table during a tourney email give them tourney # table # and name of the person and they will be removed. I make sure to have a current roster weekly and compare it to the names registered. Sadly I do not know of a sure fire way to determine who is giving the pws out
I dont think there is no one way to stop all the passwords getting out and for good or bad it seems to be something that for the most part that you just have to put up with so...unless you just send the client a list of your registered members that are eligible and let the client preregister that list themselves would be my only idea on maybe how to effectively put a stop to it ...good luck all ...see you on the felt.
Look forums around and see their ways to keep freerolls private
also who told you the idea can register without the 30 posts ^^
A good idea i read is that only people who made 30 posts or more have access to the password section, punishing spam will make the way harder for thieves
